Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory Lecture, to Physiology, Delivered to the Medical Class of the University of Virginia: October 19th, 1833 A vague notion of a circulation of blood through the system, was entertained by various writers even of an early date. Servetus who was burned as a heretic at Geneva, in 1553, approached nearer to it than any one who had preceded him, and actually taught what is called the lesser circulation, or that through the lungs. About a century after this, the illustrious Harvey, established by incontrovertible arguments, the fact that the arteries conveyed the blood from the heart to every part of the system, and that the veins returned it back again to the same organ. Like all important dis coveries, which tend to revolutionise and destroy prevailing opinions and long fostered ptejudices, it was received, not only with dis trust, but met with the most decided Opposition from the physicians of that day. A discovery so brilliant in its character and results, and which has been the foundation ol allthe improvements since made in the theory and practice of the healing art, was attempted to be pul down, simply because it was new and irreconcilable with their absurd notions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lecture Introductory to the Course of Anatomy and Physiology, in Rutgers Medical College: Delivered on Friday, Nov. 2, 1827 Under such impressions do we at present address you we believe that the profession of Medicine is succeptible of a degree of improvement equal to the highest wishes of society; we believe the human mind adequate to the task of grasping all the knowledge necessary for the deduction of principles capable of guiding us in every emergency, and we feel assured by the past, that the day will come, when the science of Me dioine will prove competent to the relief of all our maladies. But before these desirable results can be hoped for, a vast aggregate of ignorance and prejudice is to be removed: some of the most cherished and long established dogmas are to be set aside, and errors which have passsed into general accep tance must be exposed in the clear light of demonstration to the withering influence of contempt. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lecture Introductory to the Course of Anatomy and Physiology: Delivered at the Opening of Session, 1831-32 Vvhen we follow in the steps of this great master, when, after his manner, we compare the humblest form Of animated thing with that which is highest in the scale of being, - the simplest with that which is most complex in its structure and perfect in its organization, we perceive, even at a glance, the vast distance which separates them. At one end of this great chain of being, we find a multitude of living things, so sim ple in their structure, that they exhibit no function save one - nutrition no power save one - that of continuing of their species. At the other is Man, greatly pre-eminent over all the rest by his many and high endowments. Between the two extremes are placed multitudes of groups, presenting every variety of form and size, of character and condition, but which, when classed and arranged, are found to constitute a uniform series, each like the links Of a chain, being connected with the group above it and that below it, and so forming a continued line from the highest to the lowest. To ascend. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Twelve Lectures on Comparative Physiology: Delivered Before the Lowell Institute, in Boston, January and February, 1849 The knowledge thus obtained, constitutes the science Of Anatomy. But however perfectly these investigations may be pursued; however skilfully the Anatomist may dissect, however nicely the Microscopist. May observe; however accurately the Chemist may analyze - they, in the end, give us but an imperfect idea of the objects for which an imal structures were created. Zto obtain a more perfect knowledge, they must be examined in a state Of activity, during life. For the researches of the Ana'tomist will never demonstrate to us that a seed wasintended to produce aperfect. Organized being, or that muscular fibre was intended to con tract, or that a nerve was intended to carry its pe culiar influence to and from the nervous centres. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lecture on the Necessity of the Study of Physiology: Delivered Before the American Institute of Instruction, at Hartford, August 22, 1845 The going to school is so universal among chil dren every one goes so much, as a matter of course, as early as he can be taught to read, and as late as the convenience of the family can spare him from the more active employments of life, and this is done so much from habit, that one hardly stops to find reasons for so doing. And it would seem almost a work of supererogation to ask a child to tell, why or wherefore he thus buffeted with the winter's cold, or sweltered in the summer's heat, as he waded through the snows of January, or toiled beneath the burning sun of August, to the school-house. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology Preliminary Course Lectures I have endeavored in the delivery of these lectures to put within the reach and comprehension Of the first course student the foundation facts and princi ples upon which the stately edifice of physiology is built. And in the publication of them, which I have only presumed to venture in consequence of repeated requests on the part of the students of my class, I have adhered strictly to the Spirit, and as far as I could, to the letter of the delivery. This explanation will suffice, I hope, to excuse the latitude of expres sion and selection which would be accorded to off hand, lecture-room, delivery, and which might be inexcusable in a text-book compiled for the more careful study of leisure hours.
