Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Psychological Problems of Industry An increasing number of persons - works managers, politicians, trade unionists, welfare-workers and students - has become deeply interested in industrial psychology. In this book the author has attempted to bring together and develop much that may legitimately be discussed under that heading. No one will deny the difficulty of treating this subject in a dispassionate manner, but every endeavour has been made to deal with the more vexed questions in as impartial a spirit as is humanly possible. If the attempt has not been successful, then it can at least be claimed that the path has been made easier for my successor. What is not claimed, however, is that this present work is more than an introduction to an admittedly complex subject: the time is hardly ripe for a complete text-book in industrial psychology. I should like here to express my sense of indebtedness to Prof. T. H. Pear for reading through the proofs of these pages, and for making many valuable suggestions which have enabled me to improve the text considerably. It is highly unlikely that this would occur with one of our books. Our extensive quality control ensures that the readers of Trieste Publishing's books will be delighted with their purchase. Our staff has thoroughly reviewed every page of all the books in the collection, repairing, or if necessary, rejecting titles that are not of the highest quality. This process ensures that the reader of one of Trieste Publishing's titles receives a volume that faithfully reproduces the original, and to the maximum degree possible, gives them the experience of owning the original work.We pride ourselves on not only creating a pathway to an extensive reservoir of books of the finest quality, but also providing value to every one of our readers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Psychology and Industrial Efficiency Clear, concrete illustrations which demonstrate the possibilities of the new method. In the follow ing pages, accordingly, it will be my aim to ana lyze the results of experiments which have actu ally been carried out, experiments belonging to many different spheres of economic life. But these detached experiments ought always at least to point to a connected whole; the single experiments will, therefore, always need a general discussion of the principles as a background. In the interest of such a wider perspective we may at first enter into some preparatory questions of theory. They may serve as an introduction which is to lead us to the actual economic life and the present achievements of experimental psychology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Psychology of Industry A recent writer has remarked, somewhat paradoxically, that psychology is a very old science, but it has a very short history. Like most paradoxes the statement contains only that bit of truth it is intended to call attention to. As a science in the strict sense, psychology is not old. The earliest systems of thought, the germ from which have developed modern science and modern philosophy, may be said to have been reared under the influence of two main motives (i) the desire to gain control over natural processes, in order to satisfy needs and attain ends, and (2) a restless craving to penetrate into the secrets of the universe for the mere satisfaction of knowing and understanding. The second motive would naturally be characteristic only of a few individuals in any community. These became the philosophers of the early civilization. While the science of the practical man, motived by the first of these motives, was in embryo, imposing systems of speculative philosophy were built up. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Work and Effort: The Psychology of Production The progress Of applied psychology would be much more rapid if we disappointed industrial managers and supervisors more fre quently, pointing out that we would have to guess, with little guaran tee that Our guesses would be better than anyone else's. Industry has had to put engineers to work solving its physical problems and filling the gaps in available information. There is no reason why industrial and business men should expect the universities to fill in these gaps in psychological knowledge without support, and they would not do so if they realized what is involved in the questions they raise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Colonies and Village Settlements for the Consumptive Symonds, and we together examined the patients, sampled the climate and other conditions, and argued with Unger and Ruedi. Then for the second time came Hope; more solid Hope. Given a fairly early case, and three years, and recovery was in the offing. And so we went on cheerfully with Davos. But Davos was not for every one; nor was every case an early 'one. Then came the discovery that lower altitudes would do if certain conditions were obtained; and so arose the great sanatorium movement. But slowly we found that patients could not spend their lives in sanatoriums; and one day on making my way up to one of them in England, I met on the way patient after patient, slouching along, bored to death with themselves and with each other; and even worse in morale than in body. Better discipline and better notions of thera peutics mended some of that; still I could not forget those listless saunterers, and it became evident to some of us, however unwillingly, that Hope was drooping again. The sanatorium was doing a great educative work no doubt; but at the end of its four or six months - what then? To send the patient away with recommendations about light jobs, and a regime, was almost a mockery or quite. What about the wage, and the family to be supported? The next lesson was brought home to me by a visit with other commissioners to certain cities, concerning some such problems. Before me now I see a gaunt hollow-eyed man, coughing, and leaning against the wall as he tried to talk to us, saying that his mates when he came out of the sanatorium - good fellows as they were - had bought him a milk that he might creep round, and earn a bit. The brave wife, shawl on head and mill apron on, had just come from the factory, and apologised for the dirty house - as well she might. The poor thing was working all day at the factory to keep the wolf from the door. All being dragged down together into the pit! What is the value of a good house, or a clean house, if no wages! What is there for the children? And what is to stop the infection! Who then would have the imagination, the initiative, the business capacity, to lift this burden, like lifting a world?
