This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Contemporary Drama of France This volume Offers a survey and an interpretation of the French drama for three decades, fromothe opening of the theatre-libre Of Antoine to the conclusion Of the World War. It attempts the classification, analysis, and criti cism of a thousand plays by two hundred and thirty authors. Among these are included a few Belgians whose pieces, written in French, have been as familiar to Paris as to Brussels. Although the productions of the period be less striking than those of the Romantic era, and less likely than those of the Classic to endure, they are more numerous and more vitally interesting to the generation whose failures, foibles, and aspirations they depict. When the papers on the English Stage first appeared in book form, I asked M. Filon to do something of the same kind of service for English readers as he had already done for his kinsmen across the Channel, and illustrate in the pages of the Fortnightly Review some of the main principles and tendencies underlying the contemporary drama in Paris. The conditions in the two cases. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Plays French and German What Lessing did was to disestablish the French tradition, to force his German contemporaries to think about the drama for themselves, and to open a way for Goethe and for Schiller. With Lessing the German drama asserts itself, and with Goethe and Schiller it proves itself. Of the two friends, Goethe was no doubt the broader genius, but Schiller was the more natural playwright. Goethe trod the stage like a conqueror, it is true; but Schiller breathed its air like a native. Scarcely a play of Goethe's is alive in the theatre to-day - except always the immortal Faust - while one or another of Schiller's bold and manly dramas is constantly in the repertory of the leading German playhouses. Book Synopsis Plays, Vol. 1 by : Albert Ellery Bergh
Download or read book Plays, Vol. 1 written by Albert Ellery Bergh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plays, Vol. 1: By Greek, Spanish, French, German and English Dramatists; With a Special Introduction If we consider Moliere's object in all me numerous plays that emanated from his fertile genius we perceive a constant warfare against vice and folly. And no dramatic author, ancient or modern, launched the shafts of satire against such a variety of vanities and foibles. The Misanthrope is considered by most critics to be Moliere's masterpiece. It has even been character ized as the ideal of classic comedy, comprising, as it does, such immortal types as Alceste, the impatient but far from cynical hero; Célimene, the coquette; Oronte, the fop; Eliante. The rea sonable woman; and Arsinoe, the mischief maker. Moliere is, in the estimation of many critics, the most consummate comic dramatist of modern times. It is in the combination of char acter with intrigue that his genius and creative powers are seen to the greatest advantage. His plays scintillate with wit and abound in humor and frolicsome fun. They are also remarkable for their accurate character-drawing and their astonishing repro duction of humanity at large. Racine began to write when the classical fetters were riveted upon the French stage, and he never made the effort of strug gling with his chains. He was as much of a poet as the prev alcnt taste for artificial forms would permit. He excelled in re finement and harmony of versification, and in delineating the passion of love with truth, suavity, and charm. In Phedra he does not attempt the highest poetry, but the jealous frenzy of the heroine is acknowledged to be a great achievement in pure passion. The play, as a whole, is considered one of the most finished productions of the French drama. It is especially noted for excellence of construction, and artful beauty of verse. Book Synopsis Voltaire's Zaïre and Épîtres by : Voltaire Voltaire
Download or read book Voltaire's Zaïre and Épîtres written by Voltaire Voltaire and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Voltaire's Zaïre and Épîtres: Edited With Introduction and Notes Voltaire has been called the Euripides of the classical French drama. Whether this title is an appropriate one or not may be an open question, but there is no doubt that he was the most prominent dramatist of France during the eighteenth century and one of the most finished and influential writers in the entire range of literature. This edition of one of his most successful dramas, by many considered his best, Zaire, and of a number of his epistles and letters, herewith for the first time pre sented to the public of teachers and students, may therefore be reasonably expected to fill a lack in our courses of French. The tragedy of Zaire was writ ten in conscious imitation of Shakespeare's Othello, and while this circumstance may not add anything to the value of the piece, it is sufficiently interesting to justify the study of the work in all such schools and colleges as look upon a comparative study of litera ture as a valuable and necessary branch of higher education. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plays of Eugène Brieux The following analysis and critique of the plays of Eugene Brieux, as originally prepared by P. V. Thomas of University College, London, retained in the original French such extracts from the plays as are included, and in most instances the same policy was pursued in regard to the quotations from French critics. In offering this book to the American public, which so generally has evinced an interest in the work of this dramatist, it has been deemed wise to translate the passages referred to. In that connection special thanks are due to Henry M. Wing, Esq., of the Boston Bar, whose familiarity with the courts and judicial procedure of France has been of the highest service in the rendition of the important chapter devoted to La Robe Rouge.
