Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Course in the Differential and Integral Calculus The treatment of the calculus that here follows is based on the courses which I have given in this subject in Harvard Col lege for a number of years and corresponds in its main outlines to the course as given by Professor B. O. Peirce in the early eighties. The introduction of the integral as the limit of a sum at an early stage is due to Professor Byerly, who made this important change more than a dozen years ago. Professor Byerly, moreover, was a pioneer in this country in teaching the calculus by means of problems, his work in this direction dat ing from the seventies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Differential and Integral Calculus: With Applications The present Treatise is intended as an introduction to the study of the Differential and Integral Calculus, but will be found to contain what it is necessary to know in order to pass on to the subjects which presume a know ledge of the Calculus. I have endeavoured to make this book suitable not only for the mathematical student, but also for men like engineers and electricians Who require the subject for practical applications, to whom even a slight knowledge of the notation and methods of the Calculus is becoming more and more indispensable. Book Synopsis Elements of the Differential, and Integral Calculus (Revised by : William Anthony Granville
Download or read book Elements of the Differential, and Integral Calculus (Revised written by William Anthony Granville and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of the Differential, and Integral Calculus (Revised: Edition) That teachers and students of the Calculus have shown such a generous appreciation of Granville's "Elements of the Differential and Integral Calculus" has been very gratifying to the author. In the last few years considerable progress has been made in the teaching of the elements of the Calculus, and in this revised edition of Granville's "Calculus" the latest and best methods are exhibited, - methods that have stood the test of actual classroom work. Those features of the first edition which contributed so much to its usefulness and popularity have been retained. The introductory matter has been cut down somewhat in order to get down to the real business of the Calculus sooner. As this is designed essentially for a drill book, the pedagogic principle that each result should be made intuitionally as well as analytically evident to the student has been kept constantly in mind. The object is not to teach the student to rely on his intuition, but, in some cases, to use this faculty in advance of analytical investigation. Graphical illustration has been drawn on very liberally. This Calculus is based on the method of limits and is divided into two main parts, - Differential Calculus and Integral Calculus. As special features, attention may be called to the effort to make perfectly clear the nature and extent of each new theorem, the large number of carefully graded exercises, and the summarizing into working rules of the methods of solving problems. In the Integral Calculus the notion of integration over a plane area has been much enlarged upon, and integration as the limit of a summation is constantly emphasized. The existence of the limit e has been assumed and its approximate value calculated from its graph. A large number of new examples have been added, both with and without answers. At the end of almost every chapter will be found a collection of miscellaneous examples. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements Differential and Integral Calculus With Applications Tms work is an introduction to the study of the Differential and Integral Calculus, and is intended for colleges and technical schools. The object has been to present the Calculus and some of its important applications simply and concisely, and yet to give as much as it is necessary to know in order to enter upon the study of those subjects which presume a knowledge of the Calculus. The book will be found to be adapted to the needs of the mathematical student, and also will enable the engineer to get that knowledge of the Calculus which is required by him in order to make practical applications of the subject. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory Course in the Differential and Integral Calculus: For Students in Engineering A Process of Summation. Much confusion for the student is caused by this twofold meaning of the word: and the term Anti-differentiation is employed herein for The Inverse of Differentiation while the term Integration is restricted to the distinctive Calculus Process of Summation. It would be a pleasing and becoming task to acknowledge my great indebtedness to many men and books in the preparation of this work, but it is quite impossible. To the admirable treatises of Professor William E. Byerly, and to his inspiring instruction, I am under special obligations. I must thank my colleagues, Mr. A. B. Frizell and Dr. D. F. Campbell, for much kind assistance in revising and correcting the proofs. In the preparation of this Course, the needs of my own classes alone have been before me; and a strong desire to help them has been my motive for the undertaking. If they find it a clear, interesting, and stimulating introduction to a great branch of Science, I' shall feel abundantly satisfied. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Differential Calculus A Constant is a quantity that has, or is supposed to have, a definite fixed value. A Variable is a quantity that is, or is supposed to be, continually changing in value. In general, constants are represented by the first letters of the alphabet, and variables by the last; but they should not, therefore, be confused with the known and unknown quantities of Algebra, which, in general, are constants. Download or read book Integral Calculus for Beginners written by Joseph Edwards and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Integral Calculus for Beginners: With an Introduction to the Study of Differential Equations The present volume is intended to form a sound introduction to a study of the Integral Calculus, suitable for a student beginning the subject. Like its companion, the Differential Calculus for Beginners, it does not therefore aim at completeness, but rather at the omission of all portions of the subject which are usually regarded as best left for a later reading. It will be found, however, that the ordinary processes of integration are fully treated, as also the principal methods of Rectification and Quadrature, and the calculation of the volumes and surfaces of solids of revolution. Some indication is also afforded to the student of other useful applications of the Integral Calculus, such as the general method to be employed in obtaining the position of a Centroid, or the value of a Moment of Inertia. Book Synopsis Advanced Calculus by : Lynn Harold Loomis
Download or read book Advanced Calculus written by Lynn Harold Loomis and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-02-26 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authorised reissue of the long out of print classic textbook, Advanced Calculus by the late Dr Lynn Loomis and Dr Shlomo Sternberg both of Harvard University has been a revered but hard to find textbook for the advanced calculus course for decades. This book is based on an honors course in advanced calculus that the authors gave in the 1960's. The foundational material, presented in the unstarred sections of Chapters 1 through 11, was normally covered, but different applications of this basic material were stressed from year to year, and the book therefore contains more material than was covered in any one year. It can accordingly be used (with omissions) as a text for a year's course in advanced calculus, or as a text for a three-semester introduction to analysis. The prerequisites are a good grounding in the calculus of one variable from a mathematically rigorous point of view, together with some acquaintance with linear algebra. The reader should be familiar with limit and continuity type arguments and have a certain amount of mathematical sophistication. As possible introductory texts, we mention Differential and Integral Calculus by R Courant, Calculus by T Apostol, Calculus by M Spivak, and Pure Mathematics by G Hardy. The reader should also have some experience with partial derivatives. In overall plan the book divides roughly into a first half which develops the calculus (principally the differential calculus) in the setting of normed vector spaces, and a second half which deals with the calculus of differentiable manifolds.
