Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide offers the best of both worlds in its presentation of birds in both photographic and illustrative form. Each raptor species is afforded one double-page spread, allowing for extensive textual and illustrative coverage. The text focuses on bird identification, first isolating the key points necessary for identifying a species, and then discussing salient features of the adult, sub-adult and juvenile. The bird is described at perch and in flight, and any distinctive behaviour is highlighted. Current distribution, habitat and status are discussed, and finally similar species. The illustrative content, by means of carefully selected photographs from top-ranking wildlife photographers and illustrations by renowned bird artist Peter Hayman, depicts all kinds of plumage relevant to identification (male, female and immature) as well as in-flight shots to help distinguish the often confusing and similar wing patterns of this group of birds.

Due to its large land mass and impressive variety of habitats, Africa has the most diverse range of raptors of any continent – with almost a third of the world's species occurring in the region. These diurnal birds of prey are well known for their hooked bill and powerful talons, as well as their keen vision that enables them to accurately detect their prey during flight. This authoritative guide, part of the Helm Identification series, features all 106 species found in Africa, with particular emphasis on their field identification. Encompassing falcons, eagles, ospreys, kites, vultures and more, African Raptors discusses the identification of both perched and flying birds, bringing together the very latest research with accurate distribution maps, more than 300 colour photographs and 52 superb plates that illustrate a broad range of ages and racial plumage differences. This book is the ultimate reference on these remarkable birds, and will be indispensable for all birders and ornithologists with an interest in birds of prey.

Book excerpt: Birds of Prey of the West and its companion volume, Birds of Prey of the East, are the most comprehensive and authoritative field guides to North American birds of prey ever published. Written and lavishly illustrated with stunning, lifelike paintings by leading field-guide illustrator, photographer, and author Brian Wheeler, the guides depict an enormous range of variations of age, sex, color, and plumage, and feature a significant amount of plumage data that has never been published before. The painted figures illustrate plumage and species comparisons in a classic field-guide layout. Each species is shown in the same posture and from the same viewpoint, which further assists comparisons. Facing-page text includes quick-reference identification points and brief natural history accounts that incorporate the latest information. The range maps are exceptionally accurate and much larger than those in other guides. They plot the most up-to-date distribution information for each species and include the location of cities for more accurate reference. Finally, the guides feature color habitat photographs next to the maps. The result sets a new standard for guides to North America's birds of prey. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The South African Birds of Prey: Their Economic Relations to Man It is with some hesitation that I approach the subject of this paper, as the time has hardly arrived when we can formulate a perfectly correct digest of the economic value of our Raptorial birds. However, as no progress can well be expected without a "commencement," I have endeavoured to work out as correct a statement as our present knowledge will admit. The enmity with which most of our Birds of Prey are regarded - even by educated men - is proverbial. This ill-feeling extends even to birds of such unquestionable utility as the owls, but in the latter case silly superstitions play an important part in their regrettable destruction. Some while back even the Transvaal Game Protection Association - an enlightened body of enthusiastic sportsmen - went so far as to propose the imposition of a reward upon every "hawk" destroyed. As a naturalist, and the secretary of our Bird Protection Committee, I felt it incumbent upon me to write a letter of protest, both from the point of view of the agriculturist and that of the naturalist. I objected to the word "hawk," pointing out that it was too wide a term, and likely to be misconstrued to such an extent that incalculable mischief would be wrought. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Universally recognised as by far the most authoritative work ever published on the subject, The Birds of Africa is a superb multi-contributor reference work, with encyclopaedic species texts, stunning paintings of all species and numerous subspecies, hundreds of informative line drawings, detailed range maps, and extensive bibliographies. Each volume contains an Introduction that brings the reader up to date with the latest developments in African ornithology, including the evolution and biogeography of African birds. Diagnoses of the families and genera, often with superspecies maps, are followed by the comprehensive species accounts themselves. These include descriptions of range and status, field characters, voice, general habits, food, and breeding habits. Full bibliographies, acoustic references, and indexes complete this scholarly work of reference. This first volume in the series deals comprehensively with Ostrich, albatrosses, petrels and shearwaters, storm-petrels, penguins, divers, grebes, tropicbirds, boobies, cormorants, darter, pelicans, frigatebirds, herons, Hamerkop, storks, Shoebill, ibises and spoonbills, flamingos, swans, geese and ducks, and diurnal birds of prey. The editors and artists have worked closely with other authors - all acknowledged experts in their field - to produce a superb reference in which comprehensive texts on every species are complemented by accurate and detailed paintings and drawings of the birds themselves.
