Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Pumped storage hydropower is a type of hydroelectric dam that stores low-cost off-peak, excess, or unusable electrical energy. Historically, it was used in the United States and Japan to meet fluctuating power demands in conjunction with nuclear power plants. As grid stability decreases due to integration of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar into the power grid, emerges pumped storage hydropower is again gaining recognition as an effective power storage technology. In this study, Turkey’s energy portfolio with its planned pumped storage plans is given. The study also describes types of renewable energy sources, their specifications and operation techniques. Furthermore, a new model is presented that optimizes profitability of a pumped storage hydropower facility by taking advantage of intraday electricity price fluctuations. The model takes on both typical closed-loop and open-loop pumped storage hydropower projects with the objective of creating an operation schedule for profit maximization from pump storage hydropower. The model is particularly suited for comparison of open-loop pump storage hydropower versus closed-loop pump storage hydropower. Moreover, this model can be useful during the planning phase of selecting appropriate pump/turbine unit size for a pump storage hydropower plant.
