Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Practical Bacteriology: A Guide for Students and General Practitioners As prefatory to this subject, I think it advisable to reproduce some of the points of a paper read in Philadelphia, before the International Medical Con gress, of 1876, partly because certain conclusions were there maintained in the section on sanitary sci ence, before which the topic was discussed, and be cause they were further sustained by the Congress sitting as a whole; and also for the reason that they will serve as a fitting introduction to the general sub jcet. And it may be remembered, incidentally, that at that remarkable gathering there were present some of the most prominent advocates* of what was then called the germ-theory. In enumerating at that time the various theories and hypotheses that had been framed to explain the origin of infective diseases, three were given, viz.: (i) the vegetable germ; (2) the bioplasm; (3) the physico-chemical, and they were brie y sketched as follows. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Directions for Beginners in Bacteriology: An Introduction to Practical Bacteriology for Students and Practitioners of Comparative and of Human Medicine The rapid advances that are constantly being made in bacteriological work demand frequent changes in directions for laboratory practice. The subject-matter contained in this elementary work has been readjusted to satisfy these require ments, a few exercises on new topics have been introduced, and the methods given have been modified to better meet the conditions of student laboratory work. Continued experience has strengthened our former opinion that a laboratory guide which outlines the work for each exercise and gives specific instructions for the same is of great assistance to both student and teacher. I desire to express my thanks and appreciation to Mr. G. Franklin White and Mr. Walter E. King for many valuable suggestions that have been incorporated in the recast ing of these exercises. V. A. M. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 928 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Bacteriology, Microbiology and Serum Therapy (Medical and Veterinary): A Text Book for Laboratory Use SO far as the aim and scope of the book are concerned they are sufficiently described in the Author's prefaces. It remains to be said that the lack of a similar text book in English, at once sufficiently simple to put into the hands of the beginner and at the same time sufficiently advanced to be of service to the more experienced observer, together with the evident popularity of Dr. Besson's work in French speaking countries, seems to be sufficient justification for preparing the present translation. A mere translation however of a book dealing with so rapidly advancing a science as Microbiology would have been hardly satisfactory, hence an attempt has been made to bring it up to date by incorporating matter which has appeared since the French edition went to press. As regards the translation itself the original text has been followed as closely as possible, but the aim throughout has been to reproduce the sense rather than the actual words. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Elementary Practical Bacteriology: Including Bacteriological Analysis and Chemistry Bacteriology is an essential branch of Pathology, of such importance that it is gradually becoming a necessary, if not a compulsory, element in the study of Medicine. As a matter of fact, most Faculties and Universities granting a Diploma or Degree in Public Health demand three months practical instruction in Bacteriology. It is only by patient laboratory work that Bacteriology can be taught in such a manner as to serve any useful purpose. One of the chief difficulties in the practical instruction which has presented itself to us has been the want of a suitable handbook for the laboratory. The student has felt this want as much as his teachers. He cannot be expected to dig the necessary information out of large and voluminous text-books, which, moreover, are often deficient in all practical details. At St. Bartholomew's Hospital we have been in the habit of giving out slips with full directions about the work to be done from day to day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Directions for Beginners in Bacteriology: An Introduction to Practical Bacteriology for Students and Practitioners of Comparative and of Human Medicine The call for a second edition of these Laboratory Directions has come in such a short time that many of the difficulties encountered in the preparation of the first edition still remain. The choice of subject-matter and the selection of methods for a short elementary laboratory course become more and more difficult with the rapidly increasing developments in bacteriology. The recognized etiological importance of a number of bacteria which formerly were considered of little significance necessitates, for the best results, an extension of a knowledge of bacteriology beyond the differential characters and properties of a few pronounced pathogenic species. Experience with the first edition has clearly demonstrated the advantage to both student and teacher of specific directions for a working basis in carrying out the various procedures in a laboratory course. The exercises have been considerably modified, four new ones added, and a few references appended for the purpose of aiding students in familiarizing themselves with the current literature on the subject. In revising these exercises new text and reference books have been freely consulted. Valuable suggestions have also been received from a number of teachers and investigators. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Bacteriology A Manual of Bacteriology, therefore, which fairly represents the present state of knowledge, will consist largely of a statement of facts established by experimental data, and cannot fail to be of value to physicians and to advanced students of bacteriology as a work of reference. The present volume is an attempt to supply such a man ual, and at the same time a text-book of bacteriology for students and guide for laboratory work. That portion Of the book which is printed in large type will, it is hoped, be found to give an accurate and sufficiently extended account of the most important pathogenic bacteria, and of bacteriological technology, to serve as a text-book for medical students and others interested in this department Of science. The descriptions of non-pathogenic bacteria, and of the less important or imperfectly described species of pathogenic bacteria, are given in smaller type. For the benefit of students of medicine and others who do not care especially for the detailed descriptions Of non-pathogenic bacteria and the extensive bibliography contained in the Manual, this text-book OF bacteriology is now published. It comprises that portion of the Manual above referred to as printed in large type, revised to in clude all important additions to our knowledge of the pathogenic bacteria since the original date Of publication.
