Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has long been the custom among those making pollen surveys to expose microscope slides coated with a suitable adhesive and examine them for the pollen grains caught. The counts of the various species are tabulated each day and at the end of the season drawn into a graph or pollen spectrum, as it is called , which gives a clear picture of the relative amounts of the different kinds of pollen which are floating in the air from day to day throughout the growing season If done in the north temperate zone such a spectrum will show the pollen of the early flowering trees, at first a trickle, as the junipers, alders and hazels flower, then a deluge as the birches, oaks and pines and many other trees cast their pollen to the air. This is generally followed by a long stream of grass pollen, fluctuating from week to week as the various species come into flower, reach their zenith, then die out giving way to succeeding species And toward the end of the summer pollens of the late flowering weeds make their appearance, nowadays in most places completely dominated by that of the ragweed. If the record is repeated the following year the spectrum will be nearly the same The succession can be counted on to repeat itself with subtle change from year to year for many years to come, unless some cataclysm changes the surrounding vegetation which contributes to the pollen spectrum, for it is always a faithful representation of the surrounding vegetation.

Book excerpt: In the 2007 third edition of her successful textbook, Paula Rudall provides a comprehensive yet succinct introduction to the anatomy of flowering plants. Thoroughly revised and updated throughout, the book covers all aspects of comparative plant structure and development, arranged in a series of chapters on the stem, root, leaf, flower, seed and fruit. Internal structures are described using magnification aids from the simple hand-lens to the electron microscope. Numerous references to recent topical literature are included, and new illustrations reflect a wide range of flowering plant species. The phylogenetic context of plant names has also been updated as a result of improved understanding of the relationships among flowering plants. This clearly written text is ideal for students studying a wide range of courses in botany and plant science, and is also an excellent resource for professional and amateur horticulturists.

Book excerpt: "The book strikes a balance between classical fundamental information and the recent developments in plant systematics. Special attention has been devoted to the information on botanical nomenclature, identification and phylogeny of angiosperms with numerous relevant examples and detailed explanation of the important nomenclatural problems. An attempt has been made to present a continuity between orthodox and contemporary identification methods by working on a common example. The methods of identification using computers have been further explored to help better online identification. The chapter on cladistic methods has been totally revised, and molecular systematics discussed in considerable detail."--Jacket.

Book excerpt: Forensic Botany: Principles and Applications to Criminal Casework, Second Edition updates what, at the time, was the very first book published on the subject. This latest edition offers a concise introduction to plant identification, biology, genetics, and how to utilize and apply botanical evidence in criminal cases. In recent years, forensic botany and the use of various plant and plant‐derived evidence have been increasingly utilized in criminal investigations and court cases. Likewise, forensic palynology and other such terms have entered the vernacular as botanical sciences have widened the applications in which such evidence can help solve cases. This includes the use of current and emergent genetic markers and DNA technology, toxicology, diatoms, and pollen. The numerous advances since the last edition was published necessitated added coverage of the technology and testing capabilities that have achieved new levels as the field has developed. The chapters are written by some of the top experts in the field. Every chapter in the Second Edition is fully updated, with several new chapters focusing on Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA (RAPD), Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (RFLP), and Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism (AFLP), plant‐derived toxins and forensic toxicology, identifying ancient plants used in burial practices for dating sites, digested plants as evidence, and more. Forensic Botany, Second Edition provides scientists working with DNA, trace evidence, and botanical evidence—as well as investigators and legal professionals—with a thorough understanding of the latest advances and current capabilities in utilizing such evidence in investigating and adjudicating criminal cases.

Book excerpt: This volume should be seen as an extension to both the existing publications for pollen identification and traditional floras based on gross morphology. In the NEPF a pollen type provides the basis for a hierarchical construction around which the diversity of palynomorphs can be organised and interpreted. It is not a physical specimen in a herbarium, as is the type of a species name, but rather a published account comprising detailed descriptions and comprehensive illustration. In Volume VIII of "The Northwest European Pollen Flora" the following families are studied: Osmundaceae, Azollaceae, Salviniaceae, Droseraceae, Aizoaceae, Aristolochiaceae, Rhamnaceae, Vitaceae, Betulaceae (incl. Corylaceae), Myricaceae, Onagracea and Lythraceae.

Book excerpt: The focus of the present edition has been to further consolidate the information on the principles of plant systematic, include detailed discussion on all major systems of classification, and significantly, also include discussion on the selected families of vascular plants, without sacrificing the discussion on basic principles. The families included for discussion are largely those which have wide representation, as also those that are less known but significant in evaluating the phylogeny of angiosperms. The discussion of the families also has a considerable focus on their phylogenetic relationships, as evidenced by recent cladistic studies, with liberal citation of molecular data. Several additional families have been included for detailed discussion in the present volume.

Book excerpt: This first monograph in the EARTH series, The dynamics of non-industrial agriculture: 8,000 years of resilience and innovation, approaches the great variety of agricultural practices in human terms. It focuses on the relationship between plants and people, the complexity of agricultural processes and their organisation within particular communities and societies. Collaborative European research among archaeologists, archaeobotanists, ethnographers, historians and agronomists using a broad analytical scale of investigation seeks to establish new common ground for integrating different approaches. By means of interdisciplinary examples, this book showcases the relationship between people and plants across wide ranging and diverse spatial and temporal milieus, including crop diversity, the use of wild foodstuffs, social context, status and choices of food plants.

Book excerpt: The aim of this edited volume is to introduce the scientific community to paleoenvironmental studies of estuaries, to highlight the types of information that can be obtained from such studies, and to promote the use of paleoenvironmental studies in estuarine management. Readers will learn about the the application of different paleoecological approaches used in estuaries that develop our understanding of their response to natural and human influences. Particular attention is given to the essential steps required for undertaking a paleoecological study, in particular with regard to site selection, core extraction and chronological techniques, followed by the range of indicators that can be used. A series of case studies are discussed in the book to demonstrate how paleoecological studies can be used to address key questions, and to sustainably manage these important coastal environments in the future. This book will appeal to professional scientists interested in estuarine studies and/or paleoenvironmental research, as well as estuarine managers who are interested in the incorporation of paleoenvironmental research into their management programs.
