The nation's power grid is vulnerable to the effects of an electromagnetic pulse (EMP), a sudden burst of electromagnetic radiation resulting from a natural or man-made event. EMP events occur with little or no warning and can have catastrophic effects, including causing outages to major portions of the U.S. power grid possibly lasting for months or longer. Naturally occurring EMPs are produced as part of the normal cyclical activity of the sun while man-made EMPs, including Intentional Electromagnetic Interference (IEMI) devices and High Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP), are produced by devices designed specifically to disrupt or destroy electronic equipment or by the detonation of a nuclear device high above the earth's atmosphere. EMP threats have the potential to cause wide scale long-term losses with economic costs to the United States that vary with the magnitude of the event. The cost of damage from the most extreme solar event has been estimated at $1 to $2 trillion with a recovery time of four to ten years, while the average yearly cost of installing equipment to mitigate an EMP event is estimated at less than 20 cents per year for the average residential customer. HEMP is produced by a nuclear weapon detonated above the atmosphere. No blast, shock or radiation is felt at the Earth's surface; however, electromagnetic fields do reach the surface. IEMI is a term that is applied to the non-explosive, non-nuclear intentional generation of intense electromagnetic fields that are used to introduce signals into electronic equipment for the specific purpose of disrupting, confusing or damaging these electronics. IEMI devices are malicious in nature and are used for terrorist or criminal purposes. Many types of IEMI are commercially available and can be as compact as a briefcase in size. In many ways, the IEMI threat is similar to that of the early-time threat of high-altitude EMP and can be addressed in a similar fashion.

Book excerpt: If you are looking for a guide to discover the principles behind electromagnetic pulses, then keep reading... Electromagnetic pulses are created by nuclear explosions. North Korea is actively threatening to test nuclear bombs and releasing radiation into the environment. If North Korea tested a nuclear bomb near the US, the electromagnetic pulses could potentially stop all the electrical devices in the United States. The electromagnetic pulse produces a burst of radiation. Scientists strongly feel that if North Korea fires off a nuclear weapon, it will cause an electromagnetic pulse. The electromagnetic pulse could not only destroy electronic devices but could also wipe out a significant portion of the population in the United States in one blow. We need to be proactive and protect our homes with survival techniques, so we can survive the very real likelihood of these attacks. A sign that an area, region, or country is affected by EMP is when all electronic devices shut down at once. When there are many electromagnetic pulses occur at the same time, they can physically destroy a large number of computer devices, cell phones, and other devices due to the sudden buildup of magnetism. Power transformers would be impacted as well causing blackouts throughout the country, even in areas that weren't directly affected by the blast as they will be taken down because they are connected to the same grid. The severity of the nuclear explosion will depend on the height of where the bomb was dropped. The electromagnetic pulse can be of low frequency and can be of high ultraviolet wavelengths. The US military considers a detonated warhead of this type extremely hazardous. North Korea has threatened numerous times to detonate this type of warhead near the US. When detonated, this warhead could kill millions of people if done in the right place. It is known as HEMP or high-altitude electromagnetic pulse. In addition, the effects of HEMP on the earth could interact with the Earth's magnetic field, causing unknown damage in the long run. This book covers the following topics: What is Electromagnetic Pulses? Nuclear EMP, CME and RF Weapons History of Electromagnetic Pulse Ground Zero of an EMP Effects of an EMP Preparing for an EMP attack Preparation at Home What are the uses of a Faraday Cage? The report focused on the problem of understanding the effects of EMP on two-way radio communications equipment and systems and, where possible, of proposing measures to reduce the probability of damage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-altitude electromagnetic pulse (EMP) is an electromagnetic radiation of very short rise time, large amplitude, and brief duration that follows a nuclear explosion above the atmosphere. The area over which a single EMP event is experienced can be very great if the explosion if high enough and large enough. Several such nuclear explosions might render unprotected electronic equipment and systems inoperative over an area as large as the continental United States. Damage may occur when high currents and voltages, driven by EMP, reach vital internal circuits. It is therefore essential to protect the systems and to form some idea of how well they will withstand EMP.

Book excerpt: A large nuclear detonation at altitudes of several hundred kilometers above the earth distorts the earth's magnetic field and produces a strong magnetohydrodynamic electromagnetic pulse (MHD-EMP). This can adversely affect electrical power systems. In this report, the effects of this nuclear environment on critical facilities connected to the commercial power system are considered. Methods of mitigating the MHD-EMP impacts are investigated, and recommended protection schemes are presented. Guidelines for testing facilities to determine the effects of MHD-EMP and to validate the mitigation methods also are discussed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to assess the potential effects of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) radiation on the Federal Aviation Administration electronic and electric systems with a focus on the determination of the feasibility of protecting these systems from EMP effects. The report consists of five brief chapters on the characteristics of the high energy EMP phenomenon of a nuclear blast and subsequent equipment susceptibility via radiated and conducted interference. Six appendices document in detail the aspects of grounding, cable coupling, metallic penetrations, shielding, system susceptibility, circuit susceptibility, and the phenomenology of semiconductor damage. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear EMP attack is part of the military doctrines, plans and exercises of Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran for a revolutionary new way of warfare against military forces and civilian critical infrastructures by cyber, sabotage, and EMP. Significantly, because EMP attack entails detonating a nuclear weapon at such high altitude that no blast or other prompt effects injurious to humans are delivered, only the EMP that immediately damages only electronics, potential adversaries do not appear to regard nuclear EMP attack as an act of nuclear warfare. Ignorance of the military doctrines of potential adversaries and a failure of U.S. strategic imagination, as noted in military writings of potentially hostile powers, is setting America up for an EMP Pearl Harbor. EMP is essentially an anti-technology weapon--and perhaps the perfect "silver bullet" to defeat and humble the high-tech military of the United States that is the basis for its claim to be "the world's only superpower."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) simulator testing and computer simulations show that a field commander can expect approximately 65% of his unprotected electronic medical equipment to be damaged by a single nuclear detonation as far as 2200 Km away. Ways that a field commander can minimize these effects are to keep wiring near the ground. Keep wiring short. Unplug unused equipment. Run power cabling and tents in a magnetic North-South direction. Avoid running power cabling in the East-West direction. Place sensitive equipment in ISO(International Organization for Standardization) shelters.
