To accomplish this the drawing must be ao curate, complete and clear. Drawings are usually made on common drawing paper in pencil and then copied in ink by tracing them on transparent paper or cloth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Instruction in Machine Drawing Design: For Technical Schools and Engineer Students Practice in machine drawing does more for the student than merely teach him to use his instruments skilfully, or to properly represent objects by plan, elevation, and section for he is at the same time acquiring an intimate knowledge of the construction of the thing drawn. Hence forth the observant student who has been drawing, say an engine connecting rod, compares every new connecting rod he sees with the one he has drawn. The eye sees what it possesses the power to see, and every new example with which he becomes thoroughly familiar, by drawing it, enlarges his power of Vision, and enables him to see with advantage many things which would otherwise pass before him unobserved. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Industrial Drawing and Geometry: An Introduction to Various Branches of Technical Drawing Of those working without a teacher I have included a set of six half-tone prints, made from photographs showing the actual Operations, which expedient I believe was first used in my advanced work, Machine Design and Drawing. I have explained how fairly hard pencils, sharpened in the right way, should be used to practise drawing different kinds of lines of good quality in various directions on the paper; how circles and arcs can be neatly drawn so as to make proper contact with one another and with straight lines, to ensure neatness and precision in execution. These simple operations should be per formed again and again before more difficult work is taken in. Hand; as slovenly habits of drawing once acquired are extremely difficult to correct. A glance over the page of contents will show that a comprehensive, and in some chapters an unusual but useful selection of matter has been made for treatment in what is well-nigh an inexhaustible subject. Many of the drawings relate to the work of the architect, bricklayer, carpenter, engineer, industrial artist, mason, and metal-plate worker; but apart from these, attention is called in suitable places to the application of geometry to a wide range of industrial work, including engraving, gardening, land surveying, lithography, optical work, printing, stereotyping, etc., etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Working Drawings of Machinery This book has been planned especially to meet the needs of the second and third year students who are studying drawing in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The authors hope, however, that the material is of such a nature and is presented in such a way that it will partly fill the need which has always existed of a. Book devoted especially to machine drawing, suitable for use in technical schools and as a reference book for practical draftsmen. It is not an elementary text book of mechanical drawing, but rather a treatise on the application of mechanical drawing to the describing or designing of machinery. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Machine Drawing and Design It is now generally recognised that the old-fashioned method of teaching machine drawing is very unsatisfactory. In teaching by this method an undimensioned scale drawing, often of a very elaborate description, is placed before the student, who is required to copy it. Very often the student succeeds in making a good copy of the drawing placed before him without learning very much about the object represented by it, and this state of matters is sometimes not much improved by the presence of the teacher, who is often simply an art master, knowing nothing about machine design. It is related of one school that a pupil, after making a copy of a particular drawing, had a discussion with his teacher as to whether the object represented was a sewing machine or an electrical machine. Evidently the publisher of the drawing example in this case did not adopt the precaution which a backward student used at an examination in machine design : he put on a full title above his drawing, for the information of his examiner. Now, if machine drawing is to be of practical use to any one, he must be able to understand the form and arrangement of the parts of a machine from an inspection of suitable drawings of them without seeing the parts themselves. Also he ought to be able to make suitable drawings of a machine or parts of a machine from the machine or the parts themselves. Ability to read drawings is developed by examples from simple and well-known objects. This is further brought out and tested by problems requiring the student to construct other views from given drawings. To do this he must be able to visualize the thing represented and at the same time he is taught to make simple sketches. Other problems give practice in sketching from actual objects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Machine Drawing and Design for Beginners: An Introductory Work for the Use of Technical Students It is not usual for writers to refer to such minor details as machine and lever handles, so that young draughtsmen are often left to their own resources to guide them in such matters, therefore a chapter (xiii.) dealing with them has been included. In recent years much attention has been given to roller and ball bearings, particularly in motor-car work: so the construction of these, and the principles which govern their design, are explained in Chapter XVIII. In Chapter XIX. The recent and important improvements in spur gearing are described, and although the greatly improved helical gears have made mortise wheels practically obsolete, the consideration that we shall for some years to come still be using some of the old plants led the Author to include mortise wheels in this chapter. In Chapter XXVI. Will be found over one hundred questions relating to the subject, suitable for examinations or for home work purposes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Mechanical Drawing and Elementary Machine Design To properly prepare students for advanced machine design it has been found necessary to introduce a course designed to apply the principles of mechanical drawing to the solution of practical problems in machine construction and to familiarize the student with the arrangement and proportions of the most important machines and their details recognized by competent engineers to be the best practice of the present time. It is essential to intelligent study and an economical expenditure of time and labor that, before attempting to design a new machine or improve an old one, the student should post himself with all possible information concerning what has already been done in the same direction. To this end the present work has been prepared. In it we have attempted to show what is the best United States practice in the design and construction of various machines and details of machines, using rules and formulae whenever feasible in working out practical problems.
