Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Human Physiology I have written this book with a distinct consciousness that physiology in a medical school is, in conjunction with anatomy, the introduction to medicine and to surgery of those who will engage in 'general practice, ' and I hope that the volume may be found to justify its title of 'Human Physiology' with reference to the position which the subject should occupy in medical education, as the junction to which anatomy, chemistry, and physics converge, and from which the principles of medicine and of surgery diverge. Physiology does not consist in a knowledge of recondite phenomena, of difficult names, and of complicated instruments. It should fundamentally consist in the living mental picture of what the great organs below a mans skin are like, what they are doing, how they can be examined, what happens when they are not working properly, how their actions hang together, how they may be influenced for good and for evil. But physiology, as it is written, contains more than this, and, in sparing measure, it is well that the 'Institutes of Medicine' should not be restricted to the visibly 'useful, ' or to the obviously 'utilisable.' The matter embraces those parts of the subject which arc contained in the Elementary Syllabus of the Science and Art Department, but is not confined strictly within those limits. A short chapter on the Ear has been added (thus completing the outline of the organs of special sense), and also another on the Larynx and the Voice. And again, although the students working according to this Syllabus are not required to obtain any 'information upon points of structure needing the use of the compound microscope' with the exception of the characters of the corpuscles of the blood, yet in many other instances such information has been given. It is eminently desirable that the student should avail himself of every opportunity of making his study thoroughly practical. The author therefore has given, here and there, many hints as to how he should proceed in easy dissections; and has introduced a number of simple experiments, so that the knowledge gained may be of a sound character. It is too often felt that such practical and experimental methods of acquiring information are roundabout and tedious; but the author's experience has taught him to affirm that it is the readiest, surest, and certainly the most pleasant way of attaining the end in view. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology, Vol. 1 of 4 "Good wine needs no bush," but it will perhaps not be an infringement of this maxim to introduce, in a few words, Professor Luciani's excellent Text-Book of Physiology to the English-reading public. The Italian Text-book is now in its third edition, the final pages being in the Press. One or other of the earlier editions has been translated into French, German, and Russian, and it is a matter for surprise that we have had to wait so long for an English version. In the making of physiological text-books, we are at the parting of the ways. The physiologists of the past generation were brought up to know with familiarity all that had been recently done in physiological research, whether in vertebrates or invertebrates, in animals or in plants. The facts were not so numerous that they could not be stored in the memory without cumbering the judgment, and Physiologists could in some sort be first-hand authorities on all branches of the subject. That condition has been gradually passing away, and it is hardly possible for any one who is not of the old school to write an advanced text-book covering the whole ground of Physiology. Thus the text-book of single authorship is giving way to the text-book of multiple authorship. The latter, whatever its merits, has not the unity of view and the sense of proportion which belong to the former - qualities very important in a book intended for students. Professor Luciani's book, whilst describing phenomena with considerable detail, treats lucidly the broad principles to be deduced from them. It stands midway between the text-book which confines itself to summing up the results of physiological investigation, and that which gives also a minute historical account of the progress of investigation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Human Physiology: Designed for the Use of Students and Practitioners of Medicine This volume is offered to the medical profession of the United States, as a text-book for students, and also as a means of communicating, in a condensed form, such new facts and ideas in physiology, as have marked the progress of the science within a recent period. Many of these topics are of great practical importance to the medical man, as influencing, in various ways, his views on pathology and therapeutics; and they are all of interest for the physician who desires to keep pace with the annual advance of his profession, as indicating the present position and extent of one of the most progressive of the departments of medicine. It has been the object of the author, more particularly, to present, at the same time with the conclusions which physiologists have been led to adopt on any particular subject, the experimental basis upon which those conclusions are founded; and he has endeavored, so far as possible, to establish or corroborate them by original investigation, or by a repetition of the labors of others. This is more especially the case in that part of the book (Section I.) devoted to the function of Nutrition; and as a general thing, throughout the work, any statement of experimental facts, not expressly referred to the authority of some other writer, is given by the author as the result of direct personal observation. The illustrations for the work have been prepared with special reference to the subject-matter; and it is hoped that they will be found of such a character as materially to assist the student in comprehending the most important and intricate parts of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology: An Elementary Text-Book of Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene From a considerable experience with both very elementary and more advanced classes, the author has been led to certain con elusions in regard to the teaching of elementary physiology and hygiene. It is not proposed to enter here into a discussion of the correctness of these conclusions, but a brief statement of a few principles that seem fundamental may perhaps be allowable. The chief object of teaching physiology in the public schools is to train the pupils to keep their bodies in health. The mere teaching of anatomy and physiology will not accomplish this, for the pupil cannot master the structure and workings of the body in a way that will enable him to frame the laws of health and apply them. Neither can the desired end be reached by teach ing rules of health without an anatomical and physiological basis; for without such a basis, hygiene is an intangible and an elusive subject. The author has therefore concluded that a conservative middle course is wiser than either of the extremes of method mentioned above. An elementary text in physiology should be a balanced text, containing sufficient anatomy to make clear the broader outlines of the structure of the human body, enough physiology to make plain the great laws according to which the body lives, and a full discussion of how a violation of these laws may be avoided. For the introduction of certain new matter, as, for example, the cell idea, the work of enzymes, and matter relating to germ diseases, there is little need for explanation. The groundwork of physiology and pathology has in recent years so shifted and extended itself, that the subject-matter of an elementary course must to a considerable extent be altered if it is to furnish 3. It emphasizes, however, the mechanism of sense-organs, neryes, and muscles as the basis of the individual's efficiency; and it is the first text-book of medical physiology to recognize the more and more insistent demands of the mental process. For both of these reasons it is also especially adapted to the needs of students and teachers of physical education and of psychology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Human Physiology: With Their Chief Applications to Psychology, Pathology, Therapeutics, Hygiène, and Forensic Medicine In accordance with the foregoing plan, the Second, Third, and Fifth Chapters of the last Edition of this work, which included a summary of Animal Chemistry, and of the Structure and Actions of the Animal Tissues, amounting in all to about 240 pages, have been omitted from the present. On the other hand, additions have been made, to the amount of about 70 pages; and these by no means constitute the whole of the new matter introduced, since many portions have been rewritten, with little or no increase of bulk. It has been the Author's desire, on this as on former occasions, that his Treatise should represent his present convictions and opinions, as completely as if it were making its appear ance for the first time; and he has accordingly subjected every part of it to a revision not less careful than that which he would have bestowed upon it, had it less recently passed under a similar scrutiny. Although the minor results of this revision, which are scattered through almost every part of the volume, would not be apparent save on a searching comparison, yet he trusts that they will be found to have increased the utility of the work; those of more importance, however, he deems it well now to particularize. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Human Physiology: A First Year's Course in the Practice, and Theory of the Subject This book has been prepared with the object of showing how a complete course of instruction in the practice and theory of the more elementary parts of Human Physiology can be given, and it contains all the essentials of a first year's course in the subject. The study is not costly, and the book shows how it can be done with the minimum expense for apparatus and materials. In addition, many of the objections which have been advanced against its introduction into schools have been removed by the arrangement of the experiments. From an educational point of view it can be made just as profitable as the study of any other branch of science, and the knowledge gained by the pupils will be of lasting benefit throughout life. The arrangement of the practical part of the work is the result of the experience gained during many years in teaching large and successful classes in Human Physiology, and the experiments have been chosen so as to be within the reach of a first year's student.
