Book Synopsis Floods in a Changing Climate by : P. P. Mujumdar
Download or read book Floods in a Changing Climate written by P. P. Mujumdar and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hydrologic modelling of floods enables more accurate assessment of climate change impacts on flood magnitudes and frequencies. This book synthesises various modelling methodologies available to aid planning and operational decision making, with emphasis on methodologies applicable in data scarce regions, such as developing countries. Topics covered include: physical processes which transform precipitation into flood runoff, flood routing, assessment of likely changes in flood frequencies and magnitudes under climate change scenarios, and use of remote sensing, GIS and DEM technologies in modelling of floods to aid decision making. Problems included in each chapter, and supported by links to available online data sets and modelling tools accessible at www.cambridge.org/mujumdar, engage the reader with practical applications of the models"--

Book Synopsis Framing the Challenge of Urban Flooding in the United States by : National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine
Download or read book Framing the Challenge of Urban Flooding in the United States written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-04-29 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flooding is the natural hazard with the greatest economic and social impact in the United States, and these impacts are becoming more severe over time. Catastrophic flooding from recent hurricanes, including Superstorm Sandy in New York (2012) and Hurricane Harvey in Houston (2017), caused billions of dollars in property damage, adversely affected millions of people, and damaged the economic well-being of major metropolitan areas. Flooding takes a heavy toll even in years without a named storm or event. Major freshwater flood events from 2004 to 2014 cost an average of $9 billion in direct damage and 71 lives annually. These figures do not include the cumulative costs of frequent, small floods, which can be similar to those of infrequent extreme floods. Framing the Challenge of Urban Flooding in the United States contributes to existing knowledge by examining real-world examples in specific metropolitan areas. This report identifies commonalities and variances among the case study metropolitan areas in terms of causes, adverse impacts, unexpected problems in recovery, or effective mitigation strategies, as well as key themes of urban flooding. It also relates, as appropriate, causes and actions of urban flooding to existing federal resources or policies.

Book Synopsis Hydrological Modelling in Arid and Semi-Arid Areas by : Howard Wheater
Download or read book Hydrological Modelling in Arid and Semi-Arid Areas written by Howard Wheater and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-11-22 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arid and semi-arid regions are defined as areas where water is at its most scarce. The hydrological regime in these areas is extreme and highly variable, and they face great pressures to deliver and manage freshwater resources. However, there is no guidance on the decision support tools that are needed to underpin flood and water resource management in arid areas. UNESCO initiated the Global network for Water and Development Information for arid lands (GWADI), and arranged a workshop of the world's leading experts to discuss these issues. This book presents chapters from contributors to the workshop, and includes case studies from the world's major arid regions to demonstrate model applications, and web links to tutorials and state-of-the-art modelling software. This volume is a valuable reference for researchers and engineers working on the water resources of arid and semi-arid regions.
