Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Dramatic Theory While in a work of this kind, dealing with the principles of tragedy and comedy, it was necessary to devote considerable space to the fundamental sources of comic and of tragic enjoyment, it must be pointed out that this book does not profess to present a new theory of laughter or a psychological analysis of the pleasure derived from tragedy. All through I have confined myself strictly to the theatre, and have endeavoured to analyse existing works of dramatic art rather than to probe back from these works to the more primitive sources of laughter and of tears. My aim has been to write an introduction to the study of drama, and for this purpose I have treated the dramatic productivity of Greece, Rome, France, Italy, Germany, and England as one, in an attempt to capture those essential characteristics by which all are linked together. My apology for writing this book, if apology be needed, is that there is at present no satisfactory work on comedy as a type of drama, and that, even with tragedy, critics have been more inclined to analyse particular branches of the subject than to treat all as one. It has been my object here to show that there is something fundamentally in common not only between AEschylus and Shakespeare, but between Shakespeare and Ibsen; that the finest productions of modern, Elizabethan, and classical dramatic art are bound together by ties which, although less visible, count for far more than the apparent differences in style, in spirit, and in construction. Book excerpt: This volume includes major theoretical writings on drama from the Greeks, through the Renaissance up to the late seventeenth century, compiled and edited for students of drama and theater. There are substantial extracts from twenty-eight writers including Plato, Aristotle, Horace, Scaliger, Castelvetro, Guarini, Sidney, Jonson, Corneille, Racine, Dryden and Congreve. The compilers have chosen writers who present detailed arguments about issues that are still relevant to our understanding of drama and theater. Many of the texts have been freshly translated and all have been newly annotated and introduced by the compilers, who draw attention to recurrent themes by a system of cross-references. Michael Sidnell's useful introduction explores the issues that frequently concern these writers and practitioners: the nature of imitation, the relation of dramatic text to live performance, the effect of stage action on audience emotion and behavior--issues that still concern critics and theorists of drama today. Later volumes will cover the period from Diderot to Victor Hugo, modern dramatic theory, and performance theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preface to Drama: An Introduction to Dramatic Literature and Theater Art This textbook for undergraduates is a systematic introduction to Dramatic Literature within a theatrical context and to Theater Art within a literary context. It comprises two parts. "Part One: the Preface" consists of five essays on dramatic theory, to which are added five shorter plays as examples, with introductory notes and commentary. The point of view of the essays is psychological, and the drama is observed in its relation to common elements in human behavior. Consideration of it is controlled by the discriminating use of certain literary and theatrical terms. Thoughtful analysis of the content of a play enforces close interpretation of the lines and the patterning of the complex dramatic experience. This, in turn, calls for recognition of the theatrical potential of the playscript and for unusually creative reading. Once fully realized, the play then invites discussion in historical perspective and critical consideration of its form and ideas. "Part Two: the Plays" is an anthology of eight longer dramas, preceded by introductory notes and followed by pairs of selections from dramatic criticism. The plays in Preface to Drama, counting the short ones in Part One, make up a baker's dozen, representative of our Western Civilization. Here arc exemplified the short play, the medium, and the long - comedy, tragedy, and other types - classical, romantic, and realistic - ancient, more modern, and contemporary - European, British, and American. A handful of the great historic dramatists are here: Sophocles, Shakespeare, and Moliere. So, too, are the several fathers of modern drama: Ibsen, Shaw, and O'Neill. And here, as well, are significant recent dramatists: Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller. Modern literary playwrights, Laurence Housman and Thornton Wilder, rub elbows with theatrical actor-dramatists, Noel Coward and Howard Lindsay. Even the librettist, W. S. Gilbert, has his niche. But the plays selected for inclusion arc not merely representative; they have proved to be evocative of student interest and of class discussion, whether for their enduring values or for their immediate relevancy. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory and Technique of Playwriting: With a New Introduction This study of dramatic theory and technique was first published in 1936, in the midst of the social and theatrical upheaval that Harold Clurman calls The Fervent Years. Today, the arts display less fervor, and far less interest in social significance. The transition in dramatic thought from Waiting for Lefty to Waiting for Godot is almost as sweeping as the changes that have taken place among the world's peoples and powers. There are those who regard the culture of the thirties as dead and best forgotten. The question need not be debated here except insofar as this book offers testimony to the contrary. My beliefs have not Changed, nor has my fervor abated. I can hope that my understanding has ripened. But I see no need to modify or revise the theory of dramatic art on which this work is based. The theory holds that the dramatic process follows certain general laws, derived from the function of drama and its historical evolution. A play is a mimed fable, an acted and spoken story. The tale is presented because it has meaning to its creator. It embodies a vision, poses an ethical or emotional problem, praises heroes or laughs at fools. The playwright may not be conscious of any purpose beyond the telling of a tale. He may be more interested in box-oflice receipts than in social values. Nonetheless, the events taking place on the stage embody a point of View, a judgment of human relationships. Conceptual understanding is the key to mastery of dramatic technique. The structure of a play, the design of each scene and the movement of the action to its climax, are the means by which the concept is communicated. Book excerpt: The Routledge Anthology of Women's Theatre Theory and Dramatic Criticism is the first wide-ranging anthology of theatre theory and dramatic criticism by women writers. Reproducing key primary documents contextualized by short essays, the collection situates women’s writing within, and also reframes the field’s male-defined and male-dominated traditions. Its collection of documents demonstrates women’s consistent and wide-ranging engagement with writing about theatre and performance and offers a more expansive understanding of the forms and locations of such theoretical and critical writing, dealing with materials that often lie outside established production and publication venues. This alternative tradition of theatre writing that emerges allows contemporary readers to form new ways of conceptualizing the field, bringing to the fore a long-neglected, vibrant, intelligent, deeply informed, and expanded canon that generates a new era of scholarship, learning, and artistry. The Routledge Anthology of Women's Theatrical Theory and Dramatic Criticism is an important intervention into the fields of Theatre and Performance Studies, Literary Studies, and Cultural History, while adding new dimensions to Feminist, Gender and Sexuality Studies.
