Book Synopsis The 2012 Campaign and the Timeline of Presidential Elections by : Robert S. Erikson
Download or read book The 2012 Campaign and the Timeline of Presidential Elections written by Robert S. Erikson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-02-26 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do voters cast ballots for the candidates whose positions best match their own? Or does the race for president come down to who runs the most effective campaign? In their book, The Timeline of Presidential Elections, published in 2012, Erikson and Wlezien documented how both factors come into play. Having amassed data from national polls covering presidential elections from 1952 to 2008, they could track how outcomes take shape over the course of an election year. But they wanted to know whether Barak Obama’s historic 2012 campaign would follow the same pattern. This e-book both presents the central arguments from Timeline and updates the statistical analysis to include data from 2012. The authors also use the 2012 presidential campaign as a test of the empirical patterns they found in the previous fifteen elections. They show that Obama’s campaign conforms to their projections, and they confirm that it is through campaigns that voters are made aware of--or not made aware of--fundamental factors like candidates’ policy positions that determine which ticket will get their votes. In other words, fundamentals matter, but only because of campaigns. The 2012 Campaign and the Timeline of Presidential Elections will be useful in courses on the election process.

The book challenges the anti-trafficking paradigm to meaningfully understand historical legacies of present-day root-causes of human trafficking. This textbook focuses on history’s utility in public health. It describes history to contextualize and explain present times, and provides public health lessons in trafficking prevention and intervention. Public health recognizes the importance of multiple systems to solve big problems, so the chapters illustrate how current anti-trafficking efforts in markets and public systems connect with historical policies and data in the United States. Topics explored include: Capitalism, Colonialism, and Imperialism: Roots for Present-Day Trafficking Invisibility, Forced Labor, and Domestic Work Addressing Modern Slavery in Global Supply Chains: The Role of Businesses Immigration, Precarity, and Human Trafficking: Histories and Legacies of Asian American Racial Exclusion in the United States Systemic and Structural Roots of Child Sex Trafficking: The Role of Gender, Race, and Sexual Orientation in Disproportionate Victimization The Complexities of Complex Trauma: An Historical and Contemporary Review of Healing in the Aftermath of Commercialized Violence Historical Context Matters: Health Research, Health Care, and Bodies of Color in the United States Understanding linkages between contemporary manifestations of human trafficking with their respective historical roots offers meaningful insights into the roles of public policies, institutions, cultural beliefs, and socioeconomic norms in commercialized violence. The textbook identifies sustainable solutions to prevent human trafficking and improve the health of the Nation. The Historical Roots of Human Trafficking is essential reading for students of public health, health sciences, criminology, and social sciences; public health professionals; academics; anti-trafficking advocates, policy-makers, taskforces, funders, and organizations; legislators; and governmental agencies and administrators.

Book excerpt: NATO's decision to open itself to new members and new missions is one of the most contentious and least understood issues of the post-Cold War world. This book, an unusual and intriguing blend of memoirs and scholarship, takes us back to the decade when those momentous decisions were made. Former senior officials from the United States, Russia, Western and Eastern Europe who were directly involved in the decisions of that time describe their considerations, concerns, and pressures. They are joined by scholars who have been able to draw on newly declassified archival sources to revisit NATO's evolving role in the 1990s.

Book Synopsis Modeling Phosphorus in the Environment by : David E. Radcliffe
Download or read book Modeling Phosphorus in the Environment written by David E. Radcliffe and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite advances in modeling, such as graphical user interfaces, the use of GIS layers, and databases for developing input files, the approaches to modeling phosphorus (P) have not changed since their initial development in the 1980s. Current understanding of P processes has evolved and this new information needs to be incorporated into the current models. Filling this need, Modeling Phosphorus in the Environment describes basic approaches to modeling P, how the current models implement these approaches, and ways to improve them. The book sets the scene with a review of general approaches to modeling runoff and erosion, P in runoff, leaching of P, stream processes that affect P, and an examination of the important issue of model uncertainty. It describes state-of-the-science watershed-scale P transport models including dynamic semi-disturbed models, models of intermediate complexity, and two lumped models. Phosphorus Indexes (PIs) represent one end of the modeling spectrum and the book takes a comprehensive look at PIs developed in each state, and illustrates some of the problems encountered when incorporating PIs into farm-scale manure management software. The book discusses monitoring data, which is critical for calibrating models, and concludes with suggestions for improving the modeling of P. From researching mechanisms to applying regulations, the uses of phosphorus models have increased as our knowledge of the effects of phosphorus in the environment has increased. Drawing on contributions from experts, the book gives you the tools to select the model that best fits your needs.

Book Synopsis An Archeological Survey of Portions of a Proposed 345-kV Electrical Transmission Line Corridor from Oklaunion, Texas, to Lawton, Oklahoma by : Stanley Dowlen Bussey
Download or read book An Archeological Survey of Portions of a Proposed 345-kV Electrical Transmission Line Corridor from Oklaunion, Texas, to Lawton, Oklahoma written by Stanley Dowlen Bussey and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Archeological surveys of portions of proposed Public Service Company of Oklahoma 345-kV electrical transmission line corridor from Oklaunion, Texas, to Lawton, Oklahoma, were performed by archeologists from The Bentham Group, Oklahoma City. The areas surveyed comprised about 67 percent (45 miles) of the total length of the transmission corridor. Two short segements could not be surveyed because the landowners denied access. Two prehistoric archeological sites were found in Oklahoma. Both were light lithic scatters without depth or shaped or diagnostic artifacts. Additionally, two twentieth-century farmhouse sites were found, one in Oklahoma and one in Texas. A modern household dump exhibiting very recent refuse was also found in Oklahoma. Construction of electrical transmission lines within the portions of the corridor that were surveyed should have no impact on cultural resource sites that are potential sources of significant data. No further cultural resources work is recommended for the areas that were surveyed. It is recommended that archeological surveys be performed on the two areas where access was refused after access is obtained.
