Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visual aircraft recognition (VACR) is a critical skill for U.S. Army Short Range Air Defense (SHORAD) soldiers. It is the most reliable means of identifying aircraft, however VACR skills are not easy to teach or learn, and once learned they are highly degradable. The numerous training aids that exist to help units train soldiers require qualified instructors who are not always available. Also, the varying degrees of proficiency among soldiers make group training less than ideal. In an attempt to alleviate the problems in most VASC training programs, an intelligent tutor system has been developed to teach VACR in accordance with the Wings, Engine, Fuselage, Tail (WEFT) cognitive model. The Aircraft Recognition Tutor is a graphics based, object oriented instructional program that teaches, reviews and tests VACR skills at a level appropriate to the student. The tutor adaptively coaches the student from the novice level, through the intermediate level, to the expert level. The tutor was provided to two U.S. Army Air Defense Battalions for testing and evaluation. The six month implementation, testing, and evaluation process demonstrated that, using existing technology in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence, useful training tools could be developed quickly and inexpensively for deployment on existing computers in field. Keywords: Theses, Intelligent computer aided instruction. (KR).

Design of the system incorporated requirements for dynamic assessment of student knowledge, individualized instruction, implementation on a microcomputer, and use of videodisc technology for visual presentations. System design methodology is discussed and compared to instructional system design for computer-based training. The components of the computer tutor are explained in the context of an overview of the tutoring system. 9 refs., 3 figs., 1 tab.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 36 (thesis year 1991) a total of 11,024 thesis titles from 23 Canadian and 161 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 36 reports theses submitted in 1991, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Guidelines for using multi-media technology to train the thermal signatures of combat vehicles were developed from training effectiveness experiments with a prototype muli-media program and the instructional design literature. The guidelines specify requirements for a database of thermal images. The database must be constructed to support vehicle recognition/identification exercises as well as in basic instruction on thermal technology and on thermal cues. Factors to consider in developing vehicles recognition exercises are presented, to include the exercise format, establishment of vehicle sets, selection of part-task training schedules, and the type of feedback needed for soldiers and instructors. How to generate training strategies that adapt to the skill level of the soldier is described. Flexibility in the instructional design is stressed as the primary means of meeting the varied training requirements within the military. The need for an instructor's guide describing how to maximize the training features in a flexible training program is emphasized. The guidelines were applied to a multi-media, thermal training program developed in conjuction with the Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate and the manager for Forward Looking Infrared."--Stinet.

Book excerpt: This book is the fifth in a planned series of books that examine key topics (e.g., learner modeling, instructional strategies, authoring, domain modeling, assessment, impact on learning, team tutoring, machine learning, and potential standards) in intelligent tutoring system (ITS) design through the lens of the Generalized Intelligent Framework for Tutoring (GIFT) (Sottilare, Brawner, Goldberg & Holden, 2012; Sottilare, Brawner, Sinatra, & Johnston, 2017). GIFT is a modular, service-oriented architecture created to reduce the cost and skill required to author ITSs, manage instruction within ITSs, and evaluate the effect of ITS technologies on learning, performance, retention, transfer of skills, and other instructional outcomes. Along with this volume, the first four books in this series, Learner Modeling (ISBN 978-0-9893923-0-3), Instructional Management (ISBN 978-0-9893923-2-7), Authoring Tools (ISBN 978-0-9893923-6-5) and Domain Modeling (978-0-9893923-9-6) are freely available at www.GIFTtutoring.org and on Google Play.
