The sensor detects the flow by using a thin-film thermocouple (TC) array to measure the temperature difference across a heater strip. The heater and TC arrays are microfabricated on a constant-thickness quartz strut with low heat conductivity. The device can measure the velocity profile well into the boundary layer, about 65 gm from the surface, which is almost four times closer to the surface than has been possible with the previously used total pressure tube. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical guide to cutting-edge techniques for flow measurement and control Unlike any other book on the subject, this volume employs practical applications to illustrate flow measurement techniques in industrial processes. Drawing on their work at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, five leading researchers present applications that test the limits of commercial flow instrumentation-in harsh environments, wide rangeability, and a host of challenging situations encountered in research and industry. This approach gives the reader highly effective tools for use in tackling a broad range of difficult flow measurement problems. It offers tremendous insight into what flow measurement is all about, from the underlying principles of the methodologies to state-of-the-art instrumentation-including such innovations as "smart" flow sensors. Introducing terminology, properties, units, and flow meters classification, the book: * Details signal conditioning and analysis techniques that will produce meaningful results * Offers tips on selecting the appropriate method for a given application * Shows how modeling can improve mass flow metering accuracy * Covers flow calibration and standards, as well as issues related to cost, maintenance, and ease-of-use of instruments * Addresses the effect of measurement uncertainty on calibration and field measurements. Clear, concise, and generously illustrated, Flow Measurement Methods and Applications is an invaluable resource for researchers and graduate students in physics, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, and instrument engineering. It is a must-have reference for anyone wishing to assess flow processes accurately and reliably in the real world.

Book excerpt: There is a tendency to make flow measurement a highly theoretical and technical subject but what most influences quality measurement is the practical application of meters, metering principles, and metering equipment and the use of quality equipment that can continue to function through the years with proper maintenance have the most influence in obtaining quality measurement. This guide provides a review of basic laws and principles, an overview of physical characteristics and behavior of gases and liquids, and a look at the dynamics of flow. The authors examine applications of specific meters, readout and related devices, and proving systems. Practical guidelines for the meter in use, condition of the fluid, details of the entire metering system, installation and operation, and the timing and quality of maintenance are also included. This book is dedicated to condensing and sharing the authors' extensive experience in solving flow measurement problems with design engineers, operating personnel (from top supervisors to the newest testers), academically-based engineers, engineers of the manufacturers of flow meter equipment, worldwide practitioners, theorists, and people just getting into the business. The authors' many years of experience are brought to bear in a thorough review of fluid flow measurement methods and applications Avoids theory and focuses on presentation of practical data for the novice and veteran engineer Useful for a wide range of engineers and technicians (as well as students) in a wide range of industries and applications

Book excerpt: Without sustained innovation, most organizations will simply fade away. Explaining how to achieve sustained innovation success in today’s increasingly competitive global environment, ENOVALE: How to Unlock Sustained Innovation Project Success provides a validated strategy for implementing innovation projects following the ENOVALETM methodology: envision the need, nominate, objectify, validate, align and adapt, link, and execute. The authors’ first book, Chance or Choice: Unlocking Innovation Success, introduced a proven management process, using the ENOVALE methodology, for identifying innovation opportunities through validated outcomes. This book takes the outcome and provides a method—from project initiation to completion. Goes beyond the typical innovation book to outline specific solutions and strategies Includes templates, flow charts, tools, and strategies for each "means" of innovation Provides business examples of the philosophy, strategic elements, and success criteria that readers can easily relate to The text begins by explaining what strategy means in terms of innovation and how it can be transformative for products, processes, and services. After an overview of innovation, the book discusses a series of strategies for each of the three means of innovation. These strategies outline a systematic process you can use to initiate and conduct your own innovation projects. The book includes numerous business examples that illustrate the authors’ philosophy, strategic elements, and success criteria. After reading this book you will gain a solid understanding of five time-proven implementation strategies that can be applied to any type of innovation project.

It strikes a balance between laboratory ideas and the realities of field experience and provides practical advice on design, operation and performance of flowmeters. It begins with a review of essentials: accuracy, flow, selection and calibration methods. Each chapter is then devoted to a flowmeter class and includes information on design, application installation, calibration and operation. Among the flowmeters discussed are differential pressure devices such as orifice and Venturi, volumetric flowmeters such as positive displacement, turbine, vortex, electromagnetic, magnetic resonance, ultrasonic, acoustic, multiphase flowmeters and mass meters, such as thermal and Coriolis. There are also chapters on probes, verification and remote data access.

Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: Steven Nivin analyzes a process vital to economic development - technological change. He furthers understanding of the processes driving innovation, so that we may gain a deeper insight into the development of economies. Specifically, the study explores the concept of innovation potential and the factors that result in variations in innovation potential across metropolitan areas, using the US machine tool industry as a case study. To provide a comparison, the same models are also estimated for the semiconductor industry. The findings indicate that urbanisation economies, localization economies, human capital, universities, and invention-derived knowledge are significant factors. The study assesses the contributions of three different skill levels of human capital; college-educated, graduate degree, and locally produced PhD’s in mechanical and electrical engineering. Only the graduate and PhD degree measures are found to be significant, indicating the importance of having a highly skilled pool of labour within the region. The influences of the factors appear to be similar across industries, with some slight differences. The transfer of knowledge through patents is also studied. It is found that the transmission of this knowledge is slower between different industries, relative to the transmission within the same industry.
