Book excerpt: Nowadays, the performance and business operations of organizations are closely linked to the quality of their websites compared to the competition. With growing market competition, the quality of websites becomes a significant component and is increasingly being explored and identified as the main factor of comparative advantage over the competition and the maintenance of good customer relationships. A multiple criteria decision-making approach based on the use of bipolar neutrosophic numbers and the Hamming distance is proposed in this paper. The main aim of this article is to emphasize the fact that MCDM models with a smaller number of criteria can be formed without a loss of precision by applying bipolar neutrosophic numbers. In addition to this, the three variants for ranging bipolar neutrosophic numbers based on the Hamming distance and a distance from the ideal point are proposed. The applicability of the proposed approach is considered in the case of website evaluation.

Book excerpt: As the generalization of the fuzzy and similar sets based on Fuzzy sets, neutrosophic sets provide significant possibilities in the case of solving complex decision problems, often related to uncertainty and unreliability. Neutrosophic sets use three values named the truth degree, the indeterminacy degree and the falsity degree, which allow for a more accurate evaluation of alternatives in relation to complex evaluation criteria. As a result of their application in solving numerous different decision-making problems, several approaches to their ranking have been proposed. Therefore, this paper provides a comprehensive overview of the approaches to the ranking of single-valued neutrosophic numbers and a comparison of the results obtained by using them. Finally, numerical illustrations are given.

Book excerpt: During the last decade, researchers put a lot of effort into the development of the multicriteria decision methods (MCDM) capable of dealing with the uncertainty and vagueness of the initial information. MCDM approaches that work under the environment of the interval-valued neutrosophic sets (IVNS) demonstrate credibility for the analysis of different opinions as well as for the inconsistency of the criteria evaluation data. The novel multicriteria decision-making approach MULTIMOORA-IVNS (multi-objective optimisation by ratio analysis under interval-valued neutrosophic sets) is presented in this paper. A novel heuristic evaluation methodology HEBIN (heuristic evaluation based on interval numbers) that exploits MULTIMOORA-IVNS for the processing of the evaluation results is also presented in this research. HEBIN is able to increase the accuracy of the checklists-based heuristic evaluation and to diminish the impact of the inconsistencies caused by the evaluators. A comparison of six e-commerce websites is introduced to reveal the practicalities of the proposed multicriteria decision-making application.

Book excerpt: Get the latest research on new ways to measure innovation in the tourism value chain Until now, most available research on innovation in tourism product service and development has focused on concepts, rather than facts. Innovation in Hospitality and Tourism presents empirical studies that identify the major push and pull factors of innovation in hospitality and tourism, providing vital information on how to measure innovation in the control and sustainable management of new service development. This unique book examines the internal and external drivers of innovation in the market place, the difference between innovative firms and those that merely follow trends, and explanations and examples of innovations in special areas of the tourism value chain. With hospitality markets saturated and clients selecting services from all over the world, it’s not enough to have an innovative idea for a new tourism productyour idea has to have the potential to be successfully marketed. Innovation in Hospitality and Tourism looks at methods of measuring the market-based applications of new processes, products, and forms of organization, the economic impact of innovation, innovation as a bipolar process between market and resources, and forms of cooperation that can strengthen and reinforce innovation. The book’s contributors analyze the relationship between welfare services and tourism in Denmark, the innovation potential throughout the tourism value chain from the supply side focus, innovation as a competitive advantage in Alpine tourism and in the small- and medium-sized hotel industry, tourism innovation statistics across products, providers, markets, and geopolitical regions, and a case study of AltiraSPA, a wellness concept of the ArabellaSheraton group. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr Pechlaner and Dr Innerhofer, the editors of Competence-Based Innovation in Hospitality and Tourism, argue that the industry operates within highly challenging and competitive environments. Changing environmental and market conditions continually force hotel businesses and service providers to offer their customers new and modified products and services, in order to remain competitive; those which respect value perceptions of markets and sustainable stakeholder reactions. This then raises the question of how innovations within this industry must be developed in order to achieve competitive differentiation. The book demonstrates that the development and analysis of successful innovation strategies should integrate the resource-based view and its advancements, the competence-based view, as well as the dynamic capabilities approach and the relational view. Resource-based strategic management approaches view the firm as a bundle of resources and competences. They point to the importance of firm-specific resources and competences in explaining variations in competitive positions and performance differentiation between companies. The challenge of hospitality and tourism is to develop resources and competences that drive innovations. This book will serve to advance the status quo of tourism research literature by combining innovation theories with network theories and tourism and destination development, by illustrating the development of cooperative competences and innovations in tourism and by showing, in a tailored way, how the challenge of the development of resources and competences that drive innovations in tourism can be managed.

Book excerpt: This approach combines the advantages of neutrosophic numbers sets, which can utilize uncertain and incomplete information, with a multi-attributive border approximation area comparison that provides formulation flexibility and easy calculation. Further, this study develops and integrates a techno-economic model for OWFs in the decision-making. A case study is performed to evaluate and rank five proposed OWF sites off the coast of New Jersey. To validate the proposed model, a comparison against three alternative T2NN fuzzy based models is performed. It is demonstrated that the implemented model yields the same ranking order as the alternative approaches. Sensitivity analysis reveals that changing criteria weightings does not affect the ranking order.

Book excerpt: In this paper, a definition of quadripartitioned single valued bipolar neutrosophic set (QSVBNS) is introduced as a generalization of both quadripartitioned single valued neutrosophic sets (QSVNS) and bipolar neutrosophic sets (BNS). There is an inherent symmetry in the definition of QSVBNS. Some operations on them are defined and a set theoretic study is accomplished. Various similarity measures and distance measures are defined on QSVBNS. An algorithm relating to multi-criteria decision making problem is presented based on quadripartitioned bipolar weighted similarity measure. Finally, an example is shown to verify the flexibility of the given method and the advantage of considering QSVBNS in place of fuzzy sets and bipolar fuzzy sets.

We invited authors to submit their theoretical or experimental research to present engineering and economic problem solution models that deal with symmetry or asymmetry of different data types. The Special Issue gained interest in the research community and received many submissions. After rigorous scientific evaluation by editors and reviewers, seventeen papers were accepted and published. The authors proposed different solution models, mainly covering uncertain data in multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) problems as complex tools to balance the symmetry between goals, risks, and constraints to cope with the complicated problems in engineering or management. Therefore, we invite researchers interested in the topics to read the papers provided in the book.

Book excerpt: Neutrosophic sets have been recognized as an effective approach in solving complex decision-making (DM) problems, mainly when such problems are related to uncertainties, as published in numerous articles thus far. The use of the three membership functions that can be used to express accuracy, inaccuracy, and indeterminacy during the evaluation of alternatives in multiple-criteria DM can be said to be a significant advantage of these sets. By utilizing these membership functions, neutrosophic sets provide an efficient and flexible approach to the evaluation of alternatives, even if DM problems are related to uncertainty and predictions.
