Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CPA Kevin "Rocky" Collins needs his formidable sense of humor more than ever. He's still reeling from the sudden death of his charismatic but demanding and disappointed father, and his caustic wit and quirky Boston Irish personality have cost him his job. They've also sparked dangerous run-ins with a huge Mafia hit man and a biker strongman, and fostered a decided lack of way with women. Fortunately, Rocky's old friends from the neighborhood-a power-lifting bouncer, an alcoholic Vietnam vet and aspiring author, a struggling gym owner, a philandering salesman, a disappointed ex-professional baseball player, and one pain-in-the-butt, got-it-together business superstar-are as supportive as always as Rocky gains rejuvenation in the gym, on the ball field, and at the bar. But he finds his greatest comfort at a near-palatial summer house on Cape Cod, where there's a wild, summer-long party going on. To find his own happiness, Rocky knows that he needs maturity, empathy, and perspective. Throw in a new job and a good woman, and he'll be all set. But getting to that point might be the most difficult challenge of all. An Informal Boston Education humorously explores the Boston singles scene in the seventies, male bonding, the difficult relationship between fathers and sons, and life's endless trade-offs and transitions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an educational ethnography of collective informal learning and education in social movements based on five years of participant observation among Boston's New Majority from 2003-2009. The New Majority is a "movement of movements" and an organization of People of Color in Boston that seek to address an egregious obstacle to democracy: though People of Color are now a majority of the population in Boston, that majority fails to be reflected in many social and political institutions, and in much of the cultural and economic life of the city. People such as those in the New Majority, who organize together to make change in their communities, are also visionary adult education innovators demonstrating that "community is more important to learning than any other method or technique." This ethnography provides a detailed description of prophetic naming, a form of collective informal education found in the New Majority. The main intellectual activity at the heart of prophetic naming--and at the heart of all social movements--is the process of collective identity. In prophetic naming, the process of collective identity can be understood as situated learning in a community of practice. Situated learning in the New Majority community of practice is described through three characteristics: associative life, purpose and values that guide and delimit learning, and the fostering of collective learning through conversation, action and learning strategies. An analytic model for identifying and analyzing radical conversation in social movements is proposed and applied in this study: five interrelated learning tasks that decolonize the imagination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informal Learning Basics provides training and development professionals with guidance and practical lessons on harnessing the vast potential of informal learning in their organizations. While formal training has been the focus of many corporate training programs for the past century or more, much of the actual knowledge and many of the skills workers use in performing their jobs are nonetheless developed informally. Informal Learning Basics will assist you in recognizing and utilizing the informal learning possibilities in your company, and will show you how to create a framework of highly cost-effective training opportunities and a culture in which your employees are able to learn and grow in an efficient and unobtrusive way. In addition to providing an in-depth study of the concepts of informal learning, Informal Learning Basics also offers: -an analysis of how workers develop much of the knowledge for their jobs informally -real-world case examples of informal learners -an examination of the nine principles which govern informal learning in the workplace -suggestions on how to blend formal and informal learning in your organization -descriptions of specific activities for both group and individual informal learning opportunities - a discussion of the importance of support personnel in creating and maintaining effective informal learning programs - an exploration of the significant role played by technology in informal learning - information on the importance of providing a codified framework for informal learning in your organization - a consideration of the fact that traditional approaches to evaluating training are often ineffective when evaluating informal learning, and suggestions on how to best evaluate informal learning programs. In an era where organizations of all shapes and sizes are increasingly focused on cutting budgets and maximizing the return on their training investment, incorporating informal learning opportunities into your training programs will result in competent and knowledgeable employees, and great ROI for your company. With its wealth of insight and information on capturing the potential of informal learning and using it to your organization’s advantage, Informal Learning Basics is essential reading for every training and development professional.

Book excerpt: This handbook aims to be a guide to the best private schools of the country. It has been undertaken with the parent especially in mind, but it is hoped that it may be of value to school and college authorities and all others interested in the subject. It is believed that this Handbook is the first volume which attempts a critical and discriminating treatment of the private schools of the country. It is an endeavor to classify the schools on their merits -- at least a step, it is hoped, toward eventual standardization. - Editor's foreword.
