Book excerpt: This rich biography, coinciding with his death centenary, illuminates the remarkable journey of Romesh Chunder Dutt (1848-“1909) situated at the cusp of two centuries and two world views. It traces Dutt's eventful life-from his running away to England at the age of twenty, and being an exemplary ICS officer (the second Indian in the service), to his early retirement and entry into politics, and becoming president of the Indian National Congress in 1899. Dutt's contribution as an economic historian, a translator of Sanskrit epics into English, and a novelist in Bengali, are elaborately discussed and the contradictions in his attitudes to language, to colonialism, and to religion acknowledged. Featuring Curzon, Naoroji, Vidyasagar, Bankimchandra, Gokhale, Sayaji Rao Gaekwad and other luminaries of the national movement, this meticulously researched and elegantly written book captures an extraordinary moment in modern Indian history and will be enjoyed by a wide range of readers.

Book excerpt: This tale of an awkward Israeli widower and his misadventures with women is an “extraordinary novel . . . a masterpiece” (Los Angeles Times). After seven long years of illness, Molkho’s wife passes, leaving him in mourning, but also with an unexpected sense of freedom. No longer is he bound to being a caretaker for a woman too sick to even bear his touch. His future—and his desires—are his own. As the seasons of his life propel the hapless middle-aged accountant through a series of journeys and a string of infatuations—with an unwanted wife, an aggressive bureaucrat, a young girl, and a Russian émigré—Molkho begins to find the real element that was missing in his life was not romance, but his own will. An absurd, tragic, humorous, and hopeful meditation on love, marriage, and the quiet struggles of average Israeli lives, Five Seasons “reconfirms [A. B. Yehoshua’s] status as a shrewd analyst of domestic ordeals” (Publishers Weekly).

Book excerpt: For the first time in forty years, the selected letters of St. Thomas More¿son, husband, father, friend, statesman and martyr¿are now available in this newly edited volume for the contemporary reader. Moving from the days of his youth to the startling drama of his final years, this collection serves as a ¿life in letters¿ and offers the reader fresh insight into More¿s education, formation, and character, visible both in season and out of season, in little matters as well as great controversies. The first English writer to use the word ¿integrity,¿ More struggled to live as well as he wrote, with personal virtue, solid piety, and a well-formed conscience. These letters reflect all the facets of his humanity and personality, and through them, one may begin to glimpse the living face of this famous ¿man for all seasons,¿ as he was known even in his own time. In addition to the letters from Thomas More, the book offers introductory notes on the family members, friends, and other historical figures relevant to his life¿s history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 1870s to the 1930s, the Lake Superior Ojibwes of Minnesota and Wisconsin faced dramatic economic, political, and social changes. Examining a period that began with the tribe's removal to reservations and closed with the Indian New Deal, Chantal Norrgard explores the critical link between Ojibwes' efforts to maintain their tribal sovereignty and their labor traditions and practices. As Norrgard explains, the tribe's "seasonal round" of subsistence-based labor was integral to its survival and identity. Though encroaching white settlement challenged these labor practices, Ojibwe people negotiated treaties that protected their rights to make a living by hunting, fishing, and berrying and through work in the fur trade, the lumber industry, and tourism. Norrgard shows how the tribe strategically used treaty rights claims over time to uphold its right to work and to maintain the rhythm and texture of traditional Ojibwe life. Drawing on a wide range of sources, including New Deal–era interviews with Ojibwe people, Norrgard demonstrates that while American expansion curtailed the Ojibwes' land base and sovereignty, the tribe nevertheless used treaty-protected labor to sustain its lifeways and meet economic and political needs--a process of self-determination that continues today.

Book excerpt: Tourism is the world's second largest industry employing on an average one out of twenty adult men and women world-wide and the ratio is one out of ten when it comes to the developed countries like USA. The growing ranks of international leisure travellers are being influenced by business travellers who, are flooding into India as a result of economic liberalisation. It is thus imperative that our professional tourism corps be trained to meet these exacting requirements. Both in public and private sectors, the increasing understanding of these needs is leading to the development of institutes, training centres and academic programmes in tourism management. There is thus a great need for comprehensive professional literature. This two-volume series volume tells readers all that they want to know about tourism -- its history, networks and intricate operations. Volume Two discusses in detail how different tourism sectors operate and market themselves -- travel agencies, tour operators, hotels, restaurants, airlines -- as well as the impact of changing technology on their activities.
