Book excerpt: Previous investigations of longshore currents have included simplifying assumptions and restriction (such as a planar beach, a steady and depth uniform flow, spatially-variant bed shear stress and turbulent momentum exchange, and the exclusion of surface wind stress. These assumptions are quantitatively investigated by calculating the relative importance of each term in the longshore momentum balance with an emphasis on the relative importance of wind forcing across the barred nearshore. Wind and wave forcing of longshore currents across a barred beach are examined using both a numerical model and field measurements. A local momentum balance was measured at various locations across the surf zone during the SUPERDUCK experiment held at the USACE CERC Field Research Facility, Duck, N.C. in October 1986. A moveable sled was instrumented with pressure, current, and wind sensors to measure the various terms in the longshore momentum equation. Stability-dependent atmospheric drag coefficients for the surf zone are determined from wind stress measurements acquired just beyond the surf zone and wind speed measurements acquired from an anemometer atop the 9 m sled mast. It was a pivotal occasion: spectral techniques for wave measurement were beginning to be used, wave-wave interactions hadjust been discovered, and simple models for the growth of waves by wind were being developed. The meeting laid the foundation for much work that was to follow, but one could hardly have imagined the extent to which new techniques of measurement, particularly by remote sensing, new methods of calculation and computation, and new theoretical and laboratory results would, in the following twenty years, build on this base. When Gaspar Valenzuela of the V. S. Naval Research Laboratory perceived that the time was right for a second such meeting, it was natural that Sir George Deacon would be invited to serve as honorary chairman for the meeting, and the entire waves community was delighted at his acceptance. The present volume contains reviewed and edited papers given at this second meeting, held this time in Miami, Florida, May 13-20, 1981, with the generous support of the Office of Naval Research, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Book excerpt: Reported here is an experimental investigation to assess the limits of applicability of linear wave refraction theory in a convergence zone. One bottom topography with parallel circular contours symmetric about the center of the tank was utilized and three wave periods (1, 2, and 3 sec) were tested along with three wave heights for each period. All tests were conducted for nonbreaking waves. Data were obtained at 100 locations within the model basin for each condition tested. The data were analyzed on the basic assumption that the total energy was equally partitioned between potential energy and kinetic energy. The basic computation performed was to calculate the potential energy transmitted per unit width over one wave period. Measurements of the reflected energy from the underwater topographic variations indicated that such reflections were negligible. This was verified by computations utilizing the long wave theory as well as a theory not requiring the long wave assumption. The theoretical computations indicated that the reflection coefficient was between 0.002 and 0.01 for the 3-sec waves, while the measured data indicated that it was between the scatter of the data (less than 0.02). A computation of the viscous dissipation of energy at the bottom indicated an amplitude attenuation of approximately 3 percent during propagation over the entire length of the measurement area. The experimental data indicated an amplitude attenuation of less than 5 percent due to the combined effects of reflection and bottom friction. ...

Chapter 1 starts from the Maxwell’s equations and develops a wave propagation theory in plate-like media with nonlinear polarizability. In chapter 2 a theoretical framework in terms of weak solutions is given in order to prove the existence and uniqueness of a solution of the semilinear boundary-value problem derived in the first chapter. Chapter 3 presents a different approach to the solvability theory of the reduced frequency-domain model. Here the boundary-value problem is reduced to finding solutions of a system of one-dimensional nonlinear Hammerstein integral equations. Chapter 4 describes an approach to the spectral analysis of the linearized system of integral equations. Chapters 5 and 6 are devoted to the numerical approximation of the solutions of the corresponding mathematical models. Chapter 7 contains detailed descriptions, discussions and evaluations of the numerical experiments. Finally, chapter 8 gives a summary of the results and an outlook for future work.
