Incorporated in 1816, the borough lies in the heart of the state's bituminous coal region. Indiana has been home to a wide variety of industries and businesses, from breweries and lumber companies to higher education and Christmas tree farms. Among thousands of successful families and individuals, Indiana is famous as the home of actor Jimmy Stewart, Gov. John S. Fishe, and author Ed Abbey. Indiana, Pennsylvania is a compilation of stunning photographs that reveal a historical community. Included in this valuable history are the secret connections to the Underground Railroad, the arrival of electricity and telephones, the first automobiles, and the last Civil War veteran. Indiana, Pennsylvania also features many parts of the borough that have vanished, such as Indiana's early buildings and most of the old downtown hotels.

Excerpt: ...the time had arrived when the aspect was to be changed. A band of bold adventurers penetrated into the heart of the unbroken wild, and reared here the standard, of civilization. Their progress was slow at first. Inconvenience had to be sutfered, dangers met, and difficulties overcome. Cut ofi from the great thoroughfares of the State, with a sparsely settled district of country around them, and remote from mills, factories, markets and institutions of learning, their situation would not have been envied by men accustomed to live at ease, and less calculated for emergencies such as had daily to be encountered. These village pioneers were in all respects equal to the task before them. They possessed resolute hearts and strong arms, and were deeply impressed with that spirit of enterprise which is one of the leading characteristics of the pioneer American. When Henry Shryock moved here with his family there was no public road between the site of Indiana and Campbell's mills. Some of the settlers had opened a passage for wagons part of the way, beyond which it was difiicult to proceed, and the progress of Shryock's team was necessarily slow. A public road was located from Indiana, in the direction of what was afterward Blairsville, in the ensuing summer, and opened out in the fall of 1806. Leonard Shryock, then a mere lad, often spoke of the appearance of the "town" and its surroundings at the time of their arrival. His father drove the team to the high ground somewhere between the site of the "Indiana House" and the public buildings, and leaving the wagon with, the effects it contained took the family to Conrad Rice 's, where they remained several weeks, until their cabin, in what is now the...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.
