Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Illustrated Guide to the Federated Malay States But the Portuguese themselves were being attacked by the Dutch. In 1606 the Dutch eet bombarded Malacca and nearly captured it and in 1641 the city finally fell. On this occasion the Malays assisted the Dutch from Johor, where the Malay kingdom had managed to raise its head again as the Portuguese power waned. Holland dominated the Malay East from 1641, but made no attempt to do more than maintain trading settlements. Some poor adminis tration of the Peninsula was carried on by the Malay princes in Pahang, Johor and Perak. It was about this time that a band of Malays from Sumatra effected a peaceful penetration to the hinterland of Malacca and established themselves, a highly democratic community, in what is now the Negri Sembilan. These were a remarkable people. They seem to have fraternised with the wild tribes they found in the country, and to have settled down to possess it both without fighting to get it and without fighting to keep it. Probably their numbers and organisation were too formidable for Peninsular Malay princes to molest. Besides this these princes began to be harried by the far more warlike Bugis Malays from the Malay Archipelago, and though the Dutch supported them against the Bugis the struggles between the two were absorbing. I desire also to place on record my appreciation of the great kindness and courtesy I have experienced both from the British and Dutch authorities throughout the Whole of my investigations, which I ascribe to the very friendly feeling they entertain towards our young Commonwealth. The Director of Agriculture for the Federated Malay States, and the curators of the various botanical and experimental gardens were requested to supply me with all particulars regarding horticultural development. I was everywhere met by Government officials who drove me Out to the plantations and introduced me to the leading planters. During the course of my investigations in the Malay States which extended over five weeks, I travelled more than one thousand miles through the peninsula, and inspected every plantation industry in the Protectorate. From the Malay States I extended my visit to Java. His Excellency the governor-general was good enough to personally interest him self in my mission, and issued instructions to the Directors of the various Departments to supply me with whatever information I required regarding the Government and industries of Netherlands India a similar courtesy was also extended to me at their various magnificent Botanical Gardens, and in every part Of Java to which I travelled. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Federated Malay States Museums, Vol. 2: December, 1906, to March, 1909 A Party of Chinese wood-cutters, working in the jungle near Seremban in Negri Sembilan, ran out of tea, and to supply its place took the leaves of a jungle climber, dried them and made an infusion in the ordinary way. This, however, was not successful, as the beverage made the men ill with sakit perut - i.e., bowel complaint. The leaves were then roasted and a fair substitute for tea was obtained, which had no ill effects. Then, for some obscure reason, tengko, opium dross, or the refuse opium after being smoked, was mixed with it, and the men continued drinking the mixture for a week or more in place of tea. After this time it was found that all desire for opium smoking had been lost. Friends of the men were told of the discovery, and so the news was spread and others were induced to try the remedy. The above is the history of the way in which the properties of the plant, which is now quite extensively used as a cure for the opium-smoking habit, was discovered. It was told to the writer by two of the men now in charge of the factory of the Selangor Anti-opium Society in Weld Road, Kuala Lumpur, where the drug is being prepared and distributed. The plant which was thus used by these wood-cutters is a large climber with a long woody stem, attaining in old specimens a diameter of 6 to 7 inches and a length of a hundred or more feet. It grows in the jungle and climbs up to the tops of the trees, so that in the forest itself it would be very difficult to collect, as the branches and leaves are far up out of reach. A very fine example of this great climber is to be seen in the town of Kuala Lumpur, near the railway station, growing on the river bank and climbing up a large tree which has escaped the destruction which has befallen its fellows when the jungle was felled. In secondary forest, or bluka, it only attains small altitudes and is easy of collection. The plant appears to be quite common in and around Kuala Lumpur. It was collected in 1894 on Waterfall Hill, Taiping, and the specimen is in the Herbarium of the Perak Museum.
