Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Idler in the Near East There was once a famous German art critic who never went to see Mr. Gonstable's pictures without taking his umbrella, and I was constantly reminded of his foresight by letters which reached me from England during my stay in Turkey. Those who cherish disagreeable memories of the last English summer will realise the impression produced by these reports of its behaviour on one who, between the middle of March, when, after three months Of snow in its streets, he left Stamboul for Palestine, and the middle Of August, when he once again looked on the cliffs of Kent enjoying their morning bath, had seen just five showers, the worst of which lasted for three hours. Quest Of a climate necessarily exercises those whose otherwise glorious heritage is Britain. The winter in Constantinople is severe, with weeks Of snowbound streets and liquid mud but its spring and summer are successive steps towards the conditions Of Paradise. But I am well aware that my paymaster, the Great Public, regards what else I have written with indifference, if not aversion; if it call upon me at all, it calls on me in the familiar and indelible character; and when I am asked to talk of my first book, no question in the world but what is meant is my first novel. Sooner or later, somehow, anyhow, I was bound to write a novel. It seems vain to ask why. Men are born with various manias: from my earliest childhood, it 'was mine to make a plaything of imaginary series of events; anid'as soon as I was able to write, I became a good friend to the pa er-makers. Reams upon reams must have gone to the making' of Rathillet, The Pentland Rising, The King's Pardon (otherwisey'ark Whitehead), Edward Driven, A Country Dance, and A Vendetta in the W'est; and it is consolatory to remember that these reams are now all ashes, and have been received again into the soil. I have named but a few of my ill-fated efi'orts, only such indeed as came to a fair bulk ere they were desisted f'om; and even so they cover a long vista of years. Rathillet was attempted before fifteen, The Vendetta at twenty-nine, and the succession of defeats lasted unbroken till I was thirty-one. By that time, I had written little books and little essays and short stories; and had got patted on the back and paid for them - though not enough to live upon. I had quite a reputation, I was the successful man; I passed my days in toil, the futility of which would sometimes make my cheek to burn that I should spend a man's energy upon this business, and yet could not earn a livelihood: and still there shone ahead of me an unattained ideal although I had attempted the thing with vigour. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Idler, 1898, Vol. 13 One afternoon I rode out as usual, anticipating no more eventful a gallop than my usual daily excursion. I had not awaked that morning with any conscious ness or presentiment that this day would be a remarkable and memorable one in my life; it began like any other sum mer morning, in radiance of light and the singing of birds and in a million perfumes that burdened the soft air of June, but my heart was neither gladder nor less joyful than usual, and there was nothing to show me that this day was the greatest of all days for me: a day, indeed, from which I was destined to date all things from this time forward the real beginning of my existence, the red-letter day Of my life, upon which I first beheld my Douglas. I rode out, I say, as usual, taking one of my favourite roads, that which lay through the forest towards Hundeluft; and I had ridden a few miles when my pony Fritz suddenly did that for which he has felt remorse and shame ever since, as I firmly believe, though indeed I have thoroughly forgiven him, and thank the Lord daily for his fault. He shied madly across the road, brushed me up against a dense thorn-bush. Which caught my dress and pulled me out of the saddle, and him self rushed away at full gallop. The cause Of his sudden alarm was a great boar, which had appeared round the corner of the briar-bush, just as we approached it, but which, most fortunately, must have been at least as much startled as poor Fritz himself, for it instantly turned and fled squeaking and grunting in the Opposite direction, and was seen and heard no more. Book excerpt: Yearning for a life of leisure? In 24 chapters representing each hour of a typical working day, this book will coax out the loafer in even the most diligent and schedule-obsessed worker. From the founding editor of the celebrated magazine about the freedom and fine art of doing nothing, The Idler, comes not simply a book, but an antidote to our work-obsessed culture. In How to Be Idle, Hodgkinson presents his learned yet whimsical argument for a new, universal standard of living: being happy doing nothing. He covers a whole spectrum of issues affecting the modern idler—sleep, work, pleasure, relationships—bemoaning the cultural skepticism of idleness while reflecting on the writing of such famous apologists for it as Oscar Wilde, Robert Louis Stevenson, Dr. Johnson, and Nietzsche—all of whom have admitted to doing their very best work in bed. It’s a well-known fact that Europeans spend fewer hours at work a week than Americans. So it’s only befitting that one of them—the very clever, extremely engaging, and quite hilarious Tom Hodgkinson—should have the wittiest and most useful insights into the fun and nature of being idle. Following on the quirky, call-to-arms heels of the bestselling Eat, Shoots and Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation by Lynne Truss, How to Be Idle rallies us to an equally just and no less worthy cause: reclaiming our right to be idle.

Book excerpt: A SPECTATOR BOOK OF THE YEAR Longlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year 'Rich and joyous ...The book's quiet optimism about our ability to change, and to learn to love small things passionately, will stay with me for a long time' Helen Macdonald 'Big-hearted and quietly gripping' Guardian 'I love Jon Day's writing and his birds. A marvellous, soaring account' Olivia Laing '[A] beautiful book about unbeautiful birds' Observer 'This is nature writing at its best' Financial Times 'Awash with historical and literary detail, and moving moments ... Wonderful' Telegraph 'Every page of this beautifully written book brought me pleasure' Charlotte Higgins 'A vivid evocation of a remarkable species and a rich working-class tradition. It's also a charming defence of a much-maligned bird, which will make any reader look at our cooing, waddling, junk-food-loving feathered friends very differently in future' Daily Mail 'Endlessly interesting and dazzlingly erudite, this wonderful book will make a home for itself in your heart' Prospect As a boy, Jon Day was fascinated by pigeons, which he used to rescue from the streets of London. Twenty years later he moved away from the city centre to the suburbs to start a family. But in moving house, he began to lose a sense of what it meant to feel at home. Returning to his childhood obsession with the birds, he built a coop in his garden and joined a local pigeon racing club. Over the next few years, as he made a home with his young family in Leyton, he learned to train and race his pigeons, hoping that they might teach him to feel homed. Having lived closely with humans for tens of thousands of years, pigeons have become powerful symbols of peace and domesticity. But they are also much-maligned, and nowadays most people think of these birds, if they do so at all, as vermin. A book about the overlooked beauty of this species, and about what it means to dwell, Homing delves into the curious world of pigeon fancying, explores the scientific mysteries of animal homing, and traces the cultural, political and philosophical meanings of home. It is a book about the making of home and making for home: a book about why we return.
