Book excerpt: The current state of class division in contemporary American society is problematic; therefore, it is critical to understand and analyze the multiple factors that can contribute to inequitable class division. One such factor is how society chooses to consume goods and services, and how media play a part in this decision. By analyzing a medium that is easily accessible, consumed, and used across America, such as magazines and their advertisements, I can review the probable, yet subtle, communication that is being passed from the medium's content to the consumers. Little research has been conducted in the field of rhetoric that visually analyzes advertisements and their ideological influence on personal values and economic standing. This thesis is an analysis of two magazines aimed at two opposite audiences: FORTUNE Magazine and People StyleWatch Magazine. Both magazines are produced by the same corporation, Time Inc. In this thesis, I will review literature on visual rhetoric, consumption, advertising, ideology theory, and Time, Inc. This review will set a foundation from which I can analyze how advertising perpetuates and extends class division. I will also discuss the limitations of my research that are due to the nature of a case study, such as only reviewing a small section of the advertisements in a magazine, only focusing on two publications, and only analyzing the advertisements at a single point in time. Further, I will discuss options to extend this research and findings, such as analyzing advertisements used in a different publishing house, analyzing various advertising media, analyzing magazines without advertisements, and conducting general research on magazines with a rhetorical lens. My findings show that the difference among magazines consumed by the varying economic demographics can contribute to the issues of class division due the ideological messages promoted in the advertisements, which is significant considering the extreme class division that is currently at a problematic state in America.

Book excerpt: Winner of the Harold Adams Innis Prize, Politics and Ideology in Canada examines a period of crucial historical change in Canada, beginning in the mid-1970s when the crisis of the Keynesian welfare state precipitated a transition to a new political order based on the progressive "downsizing" of state involvement in the economy and society. Using class and ideology as key concepts, Michael Ornstein and Michael Stevenson examine this transition in terms of the nature of hegemony and hegemonic crisis and the conditions of political order and instability. These concepts guide the interpretation of three large surveys of representative samples of the Canadian public and two unique elite surveys, conducted between 1975 and 1981. The surveys cover an exceptionally broad spectrum of political issues, including social programs, civil and economic rights, economic policy, foreign ownership, labour relations, and language issues and sovereignty. A wide-ranging analysis of public and elite attitudes reveals a hegemonic order through the early 1980s, built around public support for the institutions of the Canadian welfare state. But there was also widespread public alienation from politics. Public opinion was quite strongly linked to class but not to party politics. Regional variation in political ideology on a broad range of issues was less pronounced than differences between Quebec and English Canada. Much deeper ideological divisions separated the elites, with a dramatic polarization between corporate and labour respondents. State elites fell between these two, though generally more favourable to capital. The responses of the business elites reveal the ideological roots of the Mulroney years in support for cuts in social programs, free trade, privatization, and deregulation.

The book is not an ideological argument that glorifies one system of thinking while attempting to persuade the reader that other systems of thinking are bankrupt. Rather, the book presents a respectful, balanced analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the qualitative approach. The book builds to a controversial final chapter entitled "Is Convergence a Possibility?" in which Potter synthesizes a conclusion from his analysis of a wide range of qualitative studies across three broad topic areas -- text focused research, audience focused research, and institution focused research -- and across seven major qualitative methodologies -- ethnography, ethnomethodology, reception study, ecological psychology, symbolic interactionism, cultural studies, and textual analysis. His conclusion is that not only is there a possibility of a convergence between qualitative and quantitative approaches, but that the convergence has already happened. The book includes an appendix in which 95 books and articles using the qualitative approach are abstracted and analyzed to illustrate key points of methodology and methods. It also includes subject and author indexes.
