This book was released on 2015-08-07 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are more than 40 veterans of the Civil War buried in the Santa Maria Cemetery. They were men who fought for their beliefs, for their ideals, for their country. They were from Pennsylvania, Kansas, Indiana, Rhode Island, Missouri, Alabama, Virginia and other states. They ranked from private to the middle officer ranks. They were in both the Union and the Confederate armies. Somehow, they found their way to the Santa Maria Valley and to the quaint cemetery that is home to the souls of so many. This book identifies these men. There is a map that takes you to each grave. There are pictures of gravestones, pension documents and other items of interest. In some cases, photographs of these men have been found. Altogether, 100 pictures are used to acquaint you with these men and with the Civil War in perhaps a way a bit different from what you might be used to. More than this, significant aspects of the Civil War are brought to the fore through descriptions of the contributions states made to the Civil War and to activities associated with it: the Women's Relief Corp, the Navy in the Civil War, the Veteran Reserve Corps, mascots, and music, "Peas, peas, peas, peas; delicious goober peas...." This book is an interesting way to learn about the Civil War while providing a chance to explore a small part of the wealth of history hidden behind the fence of the Santa Maria Cemetery.

Book excerpt: Woodland Cemetery, the second-oldest cemetery in Cleveland, was named after a romantic description of an unseen Cleveland that was part of a popular 1803 pastoral poem, The Pleasures of Hope, by Scottish poet Thomas Campbell. Its 60 acres provide a primer on American cemetery design, from the "rural cemetery" intricacies of the 1850s to the more rambling style of the late 19th century to the rectangular 20th-century grid. Its mausoleums are designed in Classical, Victorian, Egyptian, and Richardson rustic styles. These varied structures--along with angels, obelisks, and military memorials--are symbolic of the residents resting within the gates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: div This pocket-sized guidebook takes the reader on eight walking tours to archaeological sites throughout the boroughs of New York City and presents a new way of exploring the city through the rich history that lies buried beneath it. Generously illustrated and replete with maps, the tours are designed to explore both ancient times and modern space. On these tours, readers will see where archaeologists have discovered evidence of the earliest New Yorkers, the Native Americans who arrived at least 11,000 years ago. They will learn about thousand-year-old trading routes, sacred burial grounds, and seventeenth-century villages. They will also see sites that reveal details of the lives of colonial farmers and merchants, enslaved Africans, Revolutionary War soldiers, and nineteenth-century hotel keepers, grocers, and housewives. Some tours bring readers to popular tourist attractions (the Statue of Liberty and the Wall Street district, for example) and present them in a new light. Others center on places that even the most seasoned New Yorker has never seen—colonial houses, a working farm, out-of-the-way parks, and remote beaches—often providing beautiful and unexpected views from the city’s vast shoreline. A celebration of New York City’s past and its present, this unique book will intrigue everyone interested in the city and its history. /DIV
