Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical and Descriptive Account of British America, Vol. 1 of 2 The author, thus deeply impressed with the im portance Of his task, has anxiously sought every means of rendering its performance complete and satisfactory.' In tracing the condition and history of the aboriginal tribes, as influenced by the early settlement of Europeans, he has had access to ex tensive works and collections in the French lan guage, to which forme'r writers appear to have been strangers. He has devoted much attention to the statistics and present state of the colonies; an na. Dertaking which was attended with considerable difficulty, on account of the rapid changes which have recently occurred, and rendered all previous information in a great measure useless. Hence, besides the works of Bouchette, m'gregor, Martin, and others, it was necessary to examine the tables published by the Board of Trade, the voluminous reports laid before Parliament, and to Compare them with the narratives of the latest travellers and res idents. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British America, Vol. 1 of 2 Every thing convinced me that the British Empire in North America was imperfectly known; and, con sequently, that the just value of that vast territory was not understood. I was also convinced that nearly all the errors committed in treating with foreign powers concerning His Majesty's colonies, as well as all the blunders which have occurred in our colonial policy, have been the results of the meagre inform ation possessed by our government, and not, accord ing to a prevalent opinion, the effect of intentional neglect on the part of His Majesty's ministers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from America and Britain As an admirer of Great Britain, I have felt free to speak quite openly and have not allowed myself merely to indulge in pleasantries and oratorical adulation. I have referred without reserve to the prejudices and misunderstand ings of the past, which we hope are now laid definitely aside, and I have not shrunk from giving my own opinion of Britain's errors. If I seem to dwell on them too much, it is because I have desired not to give the appearance of avoiding disagreeable truths or what, at least, I deem to be truths. It is a privilege to speak in a frank and friendly way to a tolerant and kindly people. The article called the Background of American Federalism may be of interest at the present time when so many persons in Brit ain are discussing federalism, and if correct in its analysis of the disputes of the American Revolution - as I am confident after many years of study it is - it discloses, not only that the old British Empire is the source of the central principle of federalism, but also that the politi cal problem now holding the attention of Brit ish students and men of affairs is in its es sence of very long standing.
