Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address Delivered Before the Citizens of Nahant, Memorial Day, 1882 Untrampled lies the sod; The shouts of battle cease, It is the Truce of God. Last year I saw it stated in the newspapers that it was to be feared that the celebration and observance of this day were declining. For one, I cannot and do not believe this. It is changing somewhat in its character, it is true, but it is not fading. It is losing its personal quality, that which gave it birth, and with the lapse of time the element of mourning is slipping away from it. It is, in a word, becoming more impersonal. This could not be, nor would we wish it to be, otherwise; for me morial day is thus in the order of development taking on a broader and deeper significance. It is coming to stand as the annual recognition of an era in the life of the nation, and to represent the war and all the work and results of the war. For more than a hundred years we have celebrated the Revolution which freed us from colonial dependence, and the Fourth of July is still strong in our affections, and as I believe valued and valuable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Address: Delivered in Town Hall, Melrose, Mass;, July 4, 1876 Long before our independence was achieved, the Scrip ture, Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof, had been cast into a certain bell, destined to become a most famous one, and placed upon the State House in Philadelphia. True, prophetic voices con cerning America had spoken as early as 1752, when this bell was cast. Bishop Berkeley, Samuel Sewall, the Mar quis d'argenson, Turgot, and others, had plainly predicted the time when the colonies would be free the latter saying in 1750, Colonies are like fruits, which hold to the tree only until their maturity; when sufficient for themselves, thev did that which Carthage afterwards did, - tkat which some day America will do.' And it came to pass that this very bell, which had been broken and recast twice, and been in constant use since 1752, with this heaven-born inscription upon it, should, one hundred years ago, declare Liberty, and ring out to the world the glad tidings, that a new nation had sprung into existence, proclaiming in language under stood by every ear, All Men are Born Free and Equal. A century has passed since the declaration thus heralded, and which we have heard read to-day, became a reality; and we are now enjoying the blessings then fought for and established and, at this moment, almost every town, city, and hamlet is commemorating the event. To-day we celebrate the one hundredth anniversary of that all-important, that eventful epoch in our history. It has been said that cen tennial celebrations are strikings of the great clock of time, which admonish us to ponder upon the teachings of the past, and rightly appreciate the responsibilities of the present. This is, indeed, the glorious fourth of July: the centennial fourth of J ulyl and are we not excusable if we indulge in a little self-glorification? But, to do this the most thoroughly, the most satisfactorily, it seems to me, it will be necessary for each to trace the rise and growth of their respective towns, from their small beginnings to their present stand-point. The first slaves arrived in Boston in 1638; the first Black gave his life in the Boston Massacre. Entries are dramatic bullet-style cameos set off by more than 100 photographs. Arranged chronologically within a dozen categories--Science, Religion, Government, Creative Arts, among them--the elegantly designed paperback offers instant identification of names & invites follow up research--a catalyst "to find out more." Among the entries: a high school student wins ten dollars in gold for her essay on the "Evils of Intemperance"; a physician fights for the right to deliver babies at the city hospital; Blacks unite in protest against the film BIRTH OF A NATION; a Boston mechanic invents a diving suit & a dentist invents a golf tee. The BOSTON GLOBE calls it a book that explores the "rich heritage & legacy of leaders who lived here but had an impact upon all America--including Frederick Douglass, William DuBois, Phillis Wheatley, Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." An executive of Bank of Boston, which funded the publication, calls it "a book about dreams." And the dreams came true. Available through Publisher's Sales Office--666 Boylston Street, Boston, MA 02116, Tele-(617)-536-5400. xt 346.
