Download or read book The Radical Rising written by Peter Berresford Ellis and published by Birlinn Ltd. This book was released on 2016-05-19 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Glasgow, April 1820. The last armed uprising on British soil, intent on severing the Union and establishing a radical Scottish republic, ended in executions, imprisonments, transportations and 85 trails for high treason. Yet despite its political and social importance, the story of this working-class revolution vanished from the historical record. This book restores the radical rising to its rightful place in history, offering an incisive analysis of the rising itself and the events which led up to it, vividly recapturing the extraordinary heroism of its leaders, John Baird and Andrew Hardie, and the savagery with which the movement was crushed by the forces of the British state.
Book Synopsis Scottish Bodysnatchers by : Geoff Holder
Download or read book Scottish Bodysnatchers written by Geoff Holder and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2010-10-31 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graverobbing was a dark but profitable industry in pre-Victorian Scotland – criminals, gravediggers and middle-class medical students alike abstracted newly-buried corpses to send to the anatomy schools. Only after the trials of the infamous murderers Burke and Hare and the passing of the Anatomy Act of 1832 did the grisly trade end. From burial grounds in the heart of Glasgow, Dundee and Edinburgh to quiet country graveyards in the Scottish Borders and Aberdeenshire, this book takes you to every cemetery ever raided, and reveals where you can find extant pieces of anti-resurrectionist graveyard furniture, from mortsafes, coffin cages and underground vaults to watchtowers and morthouses. Richly illustrated, filled with hundreds of stories of 'reanimated' corpses, daring thefts, black-hearted murders and children sold to the slaughter by their own mothers, and with Robert Louis Stevenson's classic short story The Body Snatcher at the end, this macabre guide will delight everyone who loves Scotland's dark past.

Book Synopsis The Duel between Sir Alexander Boswell and James Stuart by : Michael Moss
Download or read book The Duel between Sir Alexander Boswell and James Stuart written by Michael Moss and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Alexander Boswell (1775-1822) wrote Scottish songs that are still performed today, such as “Jenny’s Bawbee”. An extravagant character and a Tory, he wrote flagrant lampoons of his Whig opponents. One of them greatly incensed his Whig cousin James Stuart of Dunearn, who challenged him to a duel in which Boswell was killed. At his trial for murder, Stuart was represented as a peaceable man unaccustomed to the use of firearms. Nothing could be further from the truth. He served in the militia, was irascible and, at times, violent. This book tells the compelling stories of the remarkable tangled events that led to their quarrel. The duel marked a turning point in Scottish politics away from a turbulent and fractious past to a quieter future. The Whigs triumphed, paving the way for liberal Scotland. In addition, this volume includes, for the first time, many of Boswell’s poems and witty lampoons.
