Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Historical Account of Massachusetts Currency These examples show, that money or currency, is a convertible term, not absolutely confined to any one mate rial that, among distinct nations and in several periods, it may refer to substances as diverse, as those of the animal, vegetable and mineral kingdoms. Hence, we may not exclude from the list of currencies some of the articles adopted as such, by our fathers before the close of the 17th century, merely because they do not tally with those to which we have been accustomed. This introduction now brings us to enter on the course immediately in view. As we advance, it is proposed to remark on currency, not merely in its several species, but also in some of its rela trons. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tracts Relating to the Currency of the Massachusetts Bay, 1682-1720 Influenced by the belief that there was a certain amount of interest in the subject on the part of students in History and Economics, I determined to publish some, at least, of these pamphlets, and as I did not care to attempt any selection based upon an arbitrary measure of their value, I have taken enough of them, in the chronological order of their issue, to make an 8vo volume of convenient size for handling, leaving to the future the determination whether this series shall be continued. Book Synopsis A History of American Currency by : William Graham Sumner
Download or read book A History of American Currency written by William Graham Sumner and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2005-03-01 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating but often overlooked topic is the establishment of currency in a new nation. The process involves not only a host of unknown and complicated political factors, but also economics and the culture of the new nation. In A History of American Currency, Yale Professor William G. Sumner examines the development of the monetary system in the United States, from the colonial era through the Civil War. He noted that the earliest British settlers brought with them virtually no money; the English government wouldn't allow it, and the Puritans had little or no use for it. Gradually, the settlers traded wampumpeag with their Native American neighbors, and eventually currency was developed to pay soldiers, finance expeditions, and trade with other nations. Sumner also covers the English Bank Restriction of 1797, the Bullion Report of 1810, and the development of Austrian paper money.WILLIAM GRAHAM SUMNER was a professor of political and social science at Yale University and became known as a Social Darwinist and advocate of the laissez faire principle in economics. Besides writing a number of books on sociology, history, and economics, he was also influential in the movement to modernize the American university system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Financial History of Massachusetts: From the Organization of the Massachusetts Bay Company to the American Revolution The figure of Massachusetts is no unfamiliar one upon the stage of history. She has in fact occupied a prominent posi tion there on many important occasions; and if her audience have not always been able to express an unqualified approval of her choice of parts, they have at least not failed to be impressed with the wide range of her histrionic capabilities, or with the intensity with which she impersonates the char acter Of the hour. It is generally conceded that in the varied and trying roles of persecutor of the heretic and champion of the slave, of punisher of witchcraft at home and defier of op pression abroad, Massachusetts has had few equals and no superiors. But there is another role in which she made her début at an early day, for the adequate sustaining of which, though it is far less spectacular than any of those above men tioned, unremitting rehearsal and many public performances during a period of over two hundred and fifty years have scarcely sufl'iced to prepare this venerable histrionic dame. The performance of Massachusetts as public financier demands our attention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Gouge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Paper Money and Banking in the United States, Including an Account of Provincial and Continental Paper Money: To Which Is Prefixed an Inquiry Into the Principles of the System A brief exposition of the principles of Banking, was all that the writer originally intended to give. In the first draft of the work, the historical sketch was part of a chapter. It has been extended to its present length, from a belief that a tolerably full account of incidents in the History of American Banking would be acceptable to the reader. If additional illustrations of the nature of the system were wanted, they might be derived from its history in Great' Britain. These, our limits will not permit us to introduce. We have, however, room for a sketch of _the changes of opinion that have taken place in that country, in regard to paper money. Mr. Joplin, in his History of the' Currency Question, after collating different passages in the treatise on The Wealth of Nations, gives the following as a summary of the views of Adam Smith.
