This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Creed Explained, or an Exposition of Catholic Doctrine The following work, which I am now giving to the public, has for its object to promote Catholic truth by explaining Catholic doctrine as contained in the "Creeds," and as it is defined and interpreted by the Church. It contains the summary and substance of lectures and instructions which for several years I have been accustomed to give to students and pupils; and in it I have endeavoured to explain the twelve Articles of the Creed, as well as the more recent definitions and declarations of the Church on matters of faith as contained in the decrees of the Vatican Council, and the constitutions of the Sovereign Pontiffs. I have not thought it necessary to make the work in any sense a controversial one, because I believe that a clear and accurate exposition of Catholic doctrine is the best means of promoting its knowledge, and the best remedy against misrepresentations, and the dishonest criticisms of our adversaries; and also the best refutation of the many false theories of Christianity against which we have to contend, in order to guard the true doctrine of Christ, and make it known to the people. In the manner of treating the subject, I first give an introductory treatise on the virtue of faith, together with the full text of all the "Creeds" that are approved by the Church, and professed by the faithful. Afterwards, I give the text of the "Apostles' Creed" and of the "Nicene Creed" at the head of each Article as the subject of the instructions and explanations which follow. In the explanation of the Articles I state the doctrine, explain its meaning, and then give the proofs of its truth, taken from the usual Theological sources - Sacred Scripture, Tradition, the definitions of the Church, the authority of Fathers and Theologians, and reason. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exposition of the Apostle's Creed This little work was designed to be a popular presentment of Bishop Pearson's great work, following his division of the subject, and bringing the results of his deep research within general reach. I kept to that design pretty closely, consulting at tho same time Hooker, Barrow, and Beveridge. Naturally also I availed myself of the volume on Spirits in Prison by the Dean of Wells. I owe much also to the standard work by Canon Norris on Rudiments of Theology, and to Professor Westcott's Lectures on Historic Faith. I was glad to borrow something from my old friend, W. W. Harvey, on the Three Creeds. Also I learnt much from Dr. Bright's Church History, and Bishop Hefele's Councils of the Church. I met with a disabling injury in the course of my work, but an extension of time was allowed me, and I hope that the interruption may not have impaired as it retarded the execution, and that the manual may be found serviceable in deepening the knowledge of topics in which all are so surely interested, and especially helpful to those who are preparing themselves for the sacred ministry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truth of the Apostles' Creed: An Exposition by Twelve Theologians of Germany Every assault upon the truth in the history of the Church has hitherto been overruled for its firmer estab lishment in the minds of men. The recent determined opposition to some portions of the Apostles' Creed in Germany has already furnished a further illustration of this historical phenomenon. The Church does wisely in gathering the results of every conflict and preserving them among her treasures. We in America have reason to rejoice in our freedom from many perplexities arising from the too intimate connection of Church and state. As the discussion of the Creed, in consequence, does not assume for us a legal aspect, we are in position to con sider it simply upon its merits. Our danger is that we may, in the absence of direct Opposition, fail to appre ciate this form of sound words as we should. The same influences which in other lands give rise to questions of ecclesiastical order are only too actively at work among us in seeking insidiously to undermine the faith of our people in the old doctrines centering in the person and work of Christ as the divine Redeemer. It is most fortunate for us that the more open conflict there has called forth many notable defences - among them the remarkable series of articles here presented. The circula tion of this little volume should not only serve to confirm many in the faith once delivered to the saints, but should enable them with clearer vision of the truth and with more fervor to unite with the saints of all ages in con fessing that faith in the noble language of the Apostles' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Explanation of the Nicene Creed: For the Use of Persons Beginning Study of Theology Some apology is due for venturing on a subject so mysterious, and on which so many of the highest intellects have exercised them selves. It seems no small presumption to follow, at however respectful a distance, in the footsteps of Bishop Pearson. My motive for making this attempt has been to remedy a defect Which has met me in my own theo logical reading, the want of some treatise a little more technical and systematic than the great Exposition of the Creed. The Reform ation being in some sense a reaction against previous tendencies, the theology after that did well in emancipating itself from the dry unattractive form in Which it was before that presented to the reader. A dead language did not hide it more effectually than the abstract shape in which it was proposed. Accordingly.
