Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Familiar Exposition of the Constitution of the United States: Containing a Brief Commentary on Every Clause, Explaining the True Nature, Reasons, and Objects Thereof; Designed for the Use of School Libraries and General Readers The present Work is designed, not only for private reading, but as a text book for the highest classes in our Common Schools and Academies. It is also adapted to the use of those, who are more advanced, and have left school, after having passed through the common branches of education. It may also be studied with ad vantage by those, who have arrived at maturer years, but whose pursuits have not allowed them leisure to acquire a thorough knowledge of the Republican Constitution of Government, under which they live. Some of the subjects, which are here treated of, may seem remote from those topics, which ordinarily engage the attention of our youth, and some of them may seem to be of such an abstract political nature, that the full value of them can scarcely be felt, except by persons, who have had some experience of the duties and difficulties of social life. But, I think, that it will be found, upon closer examination, that an objection of this sort can properly apply to very few passages in the Work; and that even those, which fall within the scope of the objection, will furnish sources of reflection, and means of knowledge, which will essentially aid the student in his future progress, and place him, as it were, upon the vantage ground, to master the leading principles of politics, and public policy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Exposition of the Constitution of the State of Idaho We, the people of the State of Idaho, grateful to Almighty God for our freedom, to secure its blessings and promote our common welfare, do establish this Constitution. This enacting clause is plainly modeled after the enacting clause of the Constitution of the United States. Though called a preamble, it is, strictly speaking, not a preamble but an enacting clause. A preamble is an introduction to a stat ute, which gives reasons why such law should be enacted and is no part of the enactment. The introductory sentence to this Constitution, 011 the contrary, commands or directs what is to be done, and is an integral part of this funda mental law of our State. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Constitutional Class Book: Being a Brief Exposition of the Constitution of the United States; Designed for the Use of the Higher Classes in Common Schools The present work is designed to be read and studied by the higher classes in our Common Schools. It has been pre pared ih compliance with a suggestion made to me, that such a work was a desideratum in the common course of the education of American youth. The deserved success of the excellent Class Books of Mr. William Sullivan, which do so much honor to him as a statesman, a scholar, and a moralist, have encouraged me to hope, that the task thus performed, may not be without some public utility. If it shall tend to awaken in the bosoms Of American youth a more warm and devoted attachment to the National Union, and a more deep and firm love of the National Constitution, it will afford me a very sincere gratification, and be an ample compensation for the time, which has necessarily been withdrawn from other pressing avocations, in order to complete it. The plan is the same, which I have adopted in my larger Commentaries. But it became indispensable to write nearly all the work anew, so much was required to give simplicity. Download or read book The Story of the Constitution of the United States (Classic Reprint) written by Francis Newton Thorpe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Constitution of the United States The story of the Constitution is of truth stranger than fie tion. It is natural to attribute to an institution throughout its history that reputation which it bears in our own day. Many men are yet living who remember with startling dis tinctness a time when the Constitution seemed merely a piece of parchment; when the fate of the nation was as uncertain as the course of battle; when stern necessity compelled so liberal an interpretation of the supreme law of the land that states men refrained from forming conclusions on the tendency Of national administration, and, looking hopefully forward, sought new meanings in events where before they had sought interpretation by a construction Of words. Then, and not till then, in our history was the Constitution of the United States understood in its spirit as being the expression of the nation's mind, Whatever that mind might be. But no man now living can remember the angry days when the Constitu tion was yet a hope or a proposition debated between jealous States and still more jealous political leaders. NO one can re member the living opinions which, at the close of the eight eenth century, so nearly triumphed, and whose triumph would have dissolved a feeble union of States and encouraged the horrors of an anarchy only possible in a democracy. When the Opinions on national government in America to-day and opinions Of a century ago are contrasted, it is difficult to be lieve that we are the children of our fathers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The United States: Its History and Constitution The contents of the present volume, by the late Pro fessor Alexander Johnston, first appeared as the article of the Encyclopaedia Britannica on the history and Con stitution of the United States. The narrative, it should be borne in mind, ends with the year 1887 -the last of the period entitled by the author The Reconstructed Nation: 1865 There are, however, few details which the events of the past two years have modified, and few which need to be supplemented. Some slight verbal changes, where evidently indicated, have been made in this sense, a note added with reference to the admission into the Union of Washington, Montana, and North and South Dakota, and the election of Harrison and Morton, and the prohibition of Chinese immigration chronicled. It has not been thought advisable, however, to change or supplement the text in two or three other instances in which statistics of 1889 might have been given, but in which the reader will perceive those of 1887 to have been retained as better preserving the con.
