Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present commentary seeks to be a kind of halfway house between highly technical and popular treatments of Galatians. Its purpose is to make the exposition as user-friendly as possible with only as many technicalities as necessary to accomplish that end. The emphasis of the work is decidedly theological, with attention focused on the salvation historical argument of Paul's letter. Its main target audience includes pastors, students, and Pauline scholars. The exposition assumes a modified form of the New Perspective" on Paul and Second Temple Judaism as its framework of interpretation, and for this reason a premium has been placed on the letter's historical context as attested by the literature of Second Temple Judaism as well as the Greco-Roman environment. However, far from being inimical to the foundational concerns of the Reformation, this reading of the Galatian letter is fully supportive of the great mottoes of the Reformers themselves: 'Sola Scriptura', 'Sola Fide', and especially 'Solus Christus', and all the more as the present work endeavors to honor an oft-neglected slogan of the Reformation, 'Ad Fontes' (to the sources). The previous subtitle, A New Perspective/Reformational Reading, has now been changed to A Reading from the New Perspective in order to underscore the author's appreciation of what has been learned from such scholars as J. D. G. Dunn, N. T. Wright, and numerous others.

Book excerpt: The first major biblical commentary from the pen of N. T. Wright While full of theological import, Paul’s letter to the Galatians also captures and memorializes a significant moment in the early history of Christianity. This commentary from N. T. Wright—the inaugural volume of the CCF series—offers a theological interpretation of Galatians that never loses sight of the political concerns of its historical context. With these two elements of the letter in dialogue with each other, readers can understand both what Paul originally meant and how his writing might be faithfully used to respond to present questions. Each section of verse-by-verse commentary in this volume is followed by Wright’s reflections on what the text says about Christian formation today, making this an excellent resource for individual readers and those preparing to teach or preach on Galatians. The focus on formation is especially appropriate for this biblical letter, in which Paul wrote to his fellow early Christians, “My children—I seem to be in labor with you all over again, until the Messiah is fully formed in you!”

Book excerpt: The following book is comprised of a series of essays and reviews that have been produced over the past several years, all related, in one way or the other, to the New Perspective on Paul (NPP). This defense of the NPP takes the form of a combination of exegesis and extended book reviews. In endeavoring to defend the NPP, the eight chapters of this book contain a common thread, namely, that the movement generically bearing this moniker is not inimical to most historical/traditional systems of soteriology. Yet because of the rather volatile reaction of many, the volume seeks to redress the balance in favor of a more tempered approach to a highly controversial topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grace in Galatia is an innovative socio-rhetorical study of Paul's most polemical letter. Ben Witherington breaks new ground by analyzing the whole of Galatians as a deliberative discourse meant to forestall the Galatians from submitting to circumcision and the Jewish law. The commentary features the latest discussion of major problems in Pauline studies, including Paul's view of the law and the relationship between the historical data in Galatians and in Acts. Yet the narrative character of Witherington's work allows it to remain exceedingly accessible. The volume also includes sections following the major divisions of the commentary that point to the relevance of the text for believers today, making Grace in Galatia of special value to pastors and general readers as well as students and scholars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now available in English for the first time, Augustine's Commentary on Galatians is his only complete, formal commentary on any book of the Bible and offers unique insights into his understanding of Paul and of his own task as a biblical interpreter. Yet it is one of his least known works today - and this despite its importance in the past for such major figures as Aquinas, Luther, Erasmus, and Newman. The present volume seeks to remedy this situation by providing not only an English translation with facing Latin text, but also a comprehensive introduction and copious notes. Since Galatians happens to be the only biblical book commented upon by all the ancient Latin commentators - including Jerome, Pelagius, Ambrosiaster, and Marius Victorinus, as well as Augustine - it provides a basis for comparing them and for identifying Augustine's special concerns and emphases. Augustine's Commentary also has crucial links to other works he wrote at the time, especially his monastic rule and De Doctrina Christiana. Augustine's emphasis on Galatians as a pastoral letter designed to preserve and strengthen Christian unity links the commentary to his monastic rule, while his method and sources link it to, and indeed pave the way for, the theory of biblical interpretation set forth in the De Doctrina Christiana.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jarvis Williams’ commentary on Galatians is a commentary of one of Paul’s most rhetorically charged and polemically sharp letters. Williams writes a commentary of the letter, not a commentary of commentaries. He grounds the letter in grammatical-historical exegesis, seeking to help readers understand Paul’s Greco-Roman and Second Temple Jewish context of the letter. Additionally, the book seeks to move from exegesis to application in a few places in the commentary. The strength of the commentary is that it offers a lucid and concise exegesis grounded in Paul’s first century context and applicable for twenty-first century readers.
