Abstract: This study investigated the effects of anaphoric cuing on the reading comprehension of 17 adolescent students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and 19 typically developing (TD) students matched on age, intellectual ability and word decoding ability. In a within-subject design, participants read four Chinese passages of two types (narrative fictional vs. narrative nonfictional) under two conditions (control [reading only] vs. anaphoric cuing). The ASD group showed significantly poorer reading comprehension than the TD group in the control condition. Contrary to prediction, anaphoric cuing produced a hindrance effect rather than facilitation effect on the reading comprehension performance of both groups. Correlation analysis showed different patterns between ASD and TD groups in the relationship between the ability to resolve anaphora and comprehension of the two types of passages. Abstract: Reading comprehension of students with high-functioning autism spectrum disorder (HFASD) typically falls below their decoding skills. The present study explored the effectiveness of visual-cued facilitation, in forms of activation of prior knowledge and inducing comprehension monitoring behaviours, and inference bridging facilitation on reading comprehension. Twenty-eight primary students with HFASD and their typically-developing peers completed four comprehension exercises with a practical-writing text and three narrative passages with conditions: answering pre-reading questions with illustrations, within-text picture selection tasks, and control. Results indicated that challenges of students with HFASD in Chinese reading comprehension were similar to previous findings. Their performances were no longer statistically differentiable from their peers with visual-cued facilitations. Implication for practice and future direction were discussed. This book provides a comprehensive resource for the critical discussion of major issues in learning to read Chinese from a child acquisition perspective. The combined contributions from researchers in Asian studies, linguistics, psycholinguistics, psychology, cognitive psychology, reading, and education inform international comparative studies of literacy by making apparent the features of the Chinese culture, language, writing system, and pedagogy that may facilitate or impede the acquisition of literacy.

Book excerpt: This thesis examines if certain strategies help Autism Spectrum Disorder students become more successful in reading comprehension. Research suggests that students with autism perform significantly higher when given prompting strategies (i.e. visual, anaphoric cueing, visual maps, etc.) compared to no prompting strategies during reading comprehension. In the present comparative study, a sample of five autistic students were each given six short reading comprehension stories and assessments. Three assessments were with prompting (visuals), and three were without prompting (no visuals). Even though the mean score for the use of visuals (70.4669) was higher than not using visuals (65.0002), results were inconclusive because students performed at different comprehension levels, and the sample size was relatively small.

Book excerpt: The focus in this exploratory multiple case study was to examine the reading comprehension and enjoyment of four male, English-speaking teenage students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) during a 12-week Story Club series. Parents' perceptions of their teenager's reading comprehension were also considered. Story Club involved modifying a young adult novel into a script format after which students embodied character roles and engaged in rehearsals and performances. Furthermore, students designed artwork and theater props, received social-emotional instruction from a drama therapist, and were exposed to sensory experiences, all of which were aligned with literary events from the story. Because interventions such as explicit instruction, adapted text, and graphic organizers have been shown to be impactful for certain students with ASD, I explored how adapting the book, The Boxcar Children, into a script format, with simplified language and explicit social-emotional instruction, would affect student enjoyment and comprehension. Major findings from this study revealed the potential benefits of punctuation and exaggerated letters on students' intonation and emotional understanding of the characters' experiences, the impact of music on student enjoyment and comprehension, the encouragement and support of each student toward themselves and each other, and how mediated semiotic tools served as supports to comprehension.

Book excerpt: In an exploration of bringing concepts from other disciplines to Chinese as a foreign language, a comparison between individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and foreign language learners help us analyze and better understand how foreign language learners can successfully be socialized into a target language and culture. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Health Disorders V (2013), a diagnosis of ASD includes persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts; furthermore, individuals with ASD are often described as visual leaners and are claimed to exhibit relative strength in visual processing. ASD is both a linguistic and social disorder. Ochs et al. (2004) declare that the struggles and successes of those individuals who are diagnosed with autism make apparent what is most essential to participation in human society. Exploring the struggles of individuals diagnosed with ASD can shed light on the parallels of learning to comprehend social signals in a foreign culture. Through this comparison, foreign language pedagogues can better understand what foreign language learners struggle with to communicate in Chinese culture. This in turn better informs all Chinese as a foreign language (CFL) curriculum.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this embedded multiple case study was to explore perceptions of reading comprehension interventions in students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) at public schools within the Commonwealth of Virginia and to discover common themes and strategies that help students with ASD. The sample pool consisted of approximately 62 students. The sample size included nine participants chosen through a purposeful sampling method relying on a maximum variation procedure. The research question focused on the lived experiences of students with ASD and their perceptions regarding reading comprehension and self-efficacy. The theory guiding this study was Bandura's theory of self-efficacy; that is, as students begin to believe in their abilities to complete tasks, they will see greater academic success. Data collection included interviews, direct observations, and document analysis. Data was entered in NVivo 12 for Windows to provide consistency in data input. Coding extracted major themes and consistencies in the research data. Through in-depth data collection and data analysis, I discovered five major themes in my study. Students with ASD experienced frustration with reading, fear of asking for assistance, difficulty understanding complex reading skills, career readiness anxiety, and lack of self-efficacy. Participants' frustrations with reading focused on reading comprehension and decoding skills. The fear of asking for assistance concentrated on embarrassment in asking for help and the lack of time for additional assistance. The difficulty in understanding complex reading skills circled around figurative language and reading connections. Career readiness anxiety regarded reading in the workplace and the possibility for advancement. Lastly, the lack of self-efficacy was highlighted by feelings of inadequacy and negative feelings about abilities.
