Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect an afterschool program had on middle school at-risk students' standardized test scores and behavior. The study examined students who participated in the 21st Century Community Learning Center afterschool program at two similar schools in a county in Northwest Georgia. Data were compiled for the two school years, 2007-2008 and 2008-2009. The researcher compared students' math and reading CRCT scale scores from before and after they attended an afterschool program; the number of office referrals for students from before and after they attended the afterschool program were also compared. The researcher also attempted to determine whether the frequency of attendance at an afterschool program affected math and reading CRCT scale scores and/or office referrals. A two-tailed paired t-test was conducted to compare the groups' pre-treatment and post treatment of the CRCT scale score in reading and math, in addition to office referrals. Significant differences were found in math CRCT scale scores and female math CRCT scale scores, while the reading and the number of office referrals did not show a significant difference. Attendance rates were not significantly correlated with math and reading achievement scores or office referrals.

Book excerpt: As America’s schools strive to educate a diverse population of students, some of these students, who are identified as low-achieving, find school to be difficult. The need to improve low-achieving students’ reading skills has been the focus and concern of educators for many years. This study, which utilized a causal comparative research design, investigated third and fourth grade students’ literacy achievement scores for participation or non-participation in the Students Reading Enrichment Program (SREP), which is an in-school and/or after-school program, in the Jenkins School District (JSD). The SREP provides low-achieving students the opportunity to work in small groups with interventionists, teachers, and tutors who offer structured support based on each student’s ability level. The purpose of the study was to determine if the SREP in-school and after-school programs affected student achievement in Grades 3 and 4. Students’ MCT2 and STAR Reading scores were statistically examined. Existing data from a convenience sample of students were used. A multivariate analysis of covariance (MANCOVA) and Pearson correlations were used to answer the research questions for this study. The independent variables for the study were: (a) level of participation, (b) grade level, (c) sex, and (d) attendance. The dependent or treatment variable, Reading Achievement, was comprised of students’ reading scaled scores on MCT2 and STAR Reading. No statistically significant differences were found to indicate that reading interventions affected student achievement in Grades 3 and 4. Recommendations for future research include: (a) conducting longitudinal studies to determine long term effects on students attending in-school and after-school programs over the remaining four years of the SREP, (b) analyzing other variables such as classroom teachers, in-school interventionists, after-school teachers, and after-school tutors, (c) investigating the unique contribution that each of these variables has on student achievement, (d) comparing data for the interventionists who are certified teachers and the interventionists who are not certified teachers, and (e) examining the professional development of classroom teachers, in-school interventionists, after-school teachers, and after-school tutors.

Book excerpt: The Proficient level is the goal for student performance on the NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress, 2012). With only 25% of California's grade four students performing at or above the Proficient level on the 2011 English language arts section of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) achievement tests, too many third-grade students cannot read at grade level. California's Hispanic students fared worse, with only 13% of fourth-grade students performing at or above the Proficient level. Might afterschool programs (ASP) be an opportunity to combat the achievement gap and help ensure all students are reading by the end of third grade? This mixedmethods study used California Standards Test (CST) Comprehension scores, observation, and case studies at a Northern California school, to explore the following questions: 1. Is there a significant difference, as measured by CST scores, in comprehension achievement between third through fifth grade students in an afterschool program and those not in an afterschool program? x 2. Is there a significant difference in comprehension achievement between Hispanic students and non-Hispanic students attending Ross Elementary? 3. In what ways does the afterschool program bolster reading comprehension success? The quantitative findings for Questions 1 and 2 showed that students attending the ASP did not have a significant difference on CST comprehension scores. Question 3, in a qualitative study, provided an opportunity to view students in the afterschool program through the lenses of Systems Theory (focusing on Bronfenbrenner's (1979) Ecology of Human Development Theory), Universal Design for Learning Theory, and the Appreciative Inquiry Theory. The theories formulated from qualitative data, showed illustration of support that could lead to increased student achievement via: 1. Instructional support 2. Environment of mutual trust 3. Positive expectations and environment The history and role of afterschool programs (ASPs) are examined to better understand ASPs, their purposes, and key funding sources. This study concludes with policy and future research recommendations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the eight-year development of the Reading Orienteering Club after-school program, showing how to develop, test, change, and adapt an after-school program to fit the needs of the children who attend. It includes case studies and data reports for each year and presents the theory, application, and program evaluation steps that workers in the field or students learning about program design must follow. Chapters present first-person accounts as well as statistical evaluations of the effectiveness of the reading program with each group of children. In addition, chapters highlight the changes that were made in program design and why each change was implemented, giving practitioners the insights needed to adapt interventions and strategies to their own programs. The book concludes with recommendations from the authors on how to run a successful after-school reading program. Topics featured in this book include: The effect of intrinsic motivation to mental wellness in the classroom. The importance of oral reading in correcting reading failure. Group-center approaches to teaching reading in the classroom. How to select the best evaluation tool. The challenges of mixing inner city and rural students in a reading program. After-School Programming and Intrinsic Motivation is an essential reference for scientist-practitioners, clinicians, researchers, and graduate students in such disciplines as school psychology, childhood education, social work, psychotherapy and counseling, and learning and instruction.

Book excerpt: This study evaluated after school program (ASP) participation and the growth on Ohio Achievement Assessment (OAA) scores in math and reading from spring of one school year (without participation in an ASP) to spring of the following year with an ASP in place to support growth. Participants were 43 boys and girls in the fifth grade for the 2012-2013 school year at South Middle School, a school in a small rural Midwestern town. South Middle School is a public, Title I funded school with 250 fifth and sixth grade students; 52% of students are on free and reduced lunches. A one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to see if varied levels of participation (high, medium, and low) yielded growth on math and reading OAA scores. Results indicated that while there was individual student growth on math and reading OAA scores for those involved in ASPs, various levels of participation were not significantly correlated with OAA score growth. Implications for future research and ASPs are discussed.
