Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between extracurricular activities participation and disciplinary infractions caused by at-risk male adolescents. Participants for this research study were male high school adolescents who met the criteria of being at-risk for becoming high school dropouts and participate in extracurricular activities. The participants ranged in ages from 14 to 18. The extracurricular activities included participation in the following activities: football for African-American males and soccer for Hispanic males. This research study was completed at a rural high school in the southeastern portion of Alabama. Disciplinary records, free and reduced lunch records, and extracurricular activities rosters were analyzed for this study. The results of this study conclude that participation in football for African-Americans and participation in soccer for Hispanics are equally effective with respect to the number of disciplinary infractions for the two groups when comparing the number of in-season infractions and the number of out of season infractions. Although no statistical difference was observed, the researcher concluded that in-season athletic activity for both groups were beneficial, therefore one proactive approach to aid in reducing disciplinary problems in schools is encouraging students to become involve in extracurricular activities.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the achievement growth of African-American males’ in reading and math, attendance, and discipline based on after-school participation. In this causal-comparative study, the researcher used descriptive statistics to analyze quantitative data. The study’s findings yielded no statistical difference between the TVAAS reading and math scores of African-American male after-school program participants and African-American male non-participants. However, there was a statistical difference between the African-American males who attended the after-school program and other male subgroups who also attended the after-school program. The outcome of this study will require additional research to validate the efficacy and fidelity of after-school programs to ensure ample learning opportunities that increase student achievement.

Twining and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Juvenile delinquency continues to be one of many concerns for those involved with the juvenile justice system. Research related to delinquent behavior by adolescents has included investigations about the correlates of delinquency and discussions on the reasons for such correlates. Academic achievement has been a correlate of delinquency that has gained attention recently, since researchers have found that many delinquents have displayed poor academic performance. Few studies have specifically investigated functional literacy levels of juvenile delinquents, however. Aggression is another correlate of delinquency that has been the focus of recent studies. Researchers have been examining the role of aggression in delinquent behavior for years. The present study examines relationships between three variables: literacy, aggression, and delinquent behavior. The problem studied is functional literacy deficiencies among youth involved with the intake/diversion department of the juvenile court. The purpose of this study is to examine relationships between literacy, aggression, and delinquent behavior in an attempt to understand how functional literacy and aggression play a role in the delinquent behavior of youth. The sample for the study consists of juveniles ages 12-17 who have participated in a diversion interview with an intake counselor at the Intake/Diversion Department of the Franklin County Juvenile Court in Columbus, Ohio. The sample includes a total of 121 youth, 67 males and 54 females, each of which have been referred to a juvenile justice diversion program. The measurement tool used to gather data is a one hundred-item questionnaire, which includes questions about the adolescent and his or her behavior. Specifically, the questionnaire includes two subscales of the Child Behavior Checklist, one measuring delinquent behavior and another measuring aggression. The third section of the questionnaire addresses functional literacy, with a set of five questions that pertain to the adolescent's ability to perform common everyday activities that involve functional literacy skills. Results indicate that functional literacy, aggression and delinquent behavior each correlate significantly with one another. It is concluded that the higher the functional literacy scores for the youth in this study, the lower they score on measures of aggression and delinquent behavior. One implication of this study is that steps should be taken toward the prevention of troubled youth who display signs of functional illiteracy, delinquent behavior, and aggression, in order to get them the help needed, so as to avoid any involvement with the juvenile justice system.
