Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: This study investigated the relationships among negative career thoughts and profile elevation, differentiation, career decidedness, and satisfaction with choice. Study participants were 226 university students enrolled in an Introduction to Career Development course. The Career Thoughts Inventory (CTI) was used to measure negative career thoughts, the Self-Directed Search (SDS) was used to measure profile elevation and differentiation, the Occupational Alternatives Question (OAQ) was used to measure career decidedness, and the Satisfaction with Choice item was used to determine participants' level of satisfaction with their first career choice. A series of multiple regression analyses were conducted to determine the amount of variance accounted for by negative career thoughts (decision-making confusion, commitment anxiety, and external conflict) in profile elevation, differentiation, career decidedness, and satisfaction with choice.

Book excerpt: American higher education is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse and researchers have suggested that more attention should be given to better understanding the career development of college students of color. Although there is substantial research on career development and the career decision-making process, studies have overwhelmingly primarily used data collected from White participants. Thus, little research has been done on the career development of people of color and specifically, college students of color. The primary focus of this study was to explore relationships between career decision-making self-efficacy, career maturity attitudes, and racial identity attitudes of college students of color. In addition, the study explored relationships between career decision-making self-efficacy, career maturity attitudes, and various demographic and life experience variables.^A sample of 164 college students of color attending five institutions of higher education in the Western New York area was used for this study. A survey packet consisting of four separate self-report instruments was completed by each participant. This study employed a multiple correlation and regression survey research design which was used to examine relationships between variables. This study generated a number of important findings. First, strong relationships where found between career decision-making self-efficacy and career maturity attitudes for this sample. Second, career decision-making self-efficacy and career maturity attitudes were related both positively and negatively, depending upon participants' current racial identity status, to participants' racial identity attitudes.^Third, participants' age, year in college, academic major, mother's educational level, and family income were predictors of their confidence in their ability to make a career choice that would meet their preferred lifestyle. Lastly, none of the remaining demographic variables were related to either career development construct. This study also explored the implications of the findings on career counseling with students of color, student affairs and academic advising practice, and higher education policy. Overall, this study provides new and relevant information regarding the career and racial identity development of college students of color, a very limited body of scholarly literature.

Book excerpt: Career decision-making is examined as it relates to anxiety, worry, and personality correlates in an undergraduate population. Participants included 139 males and 199 females enrolled in a public university in a semirural Midwestern community. The majority of participants were Caucasian (73%), with an average age of 21 years. The students voluntarily completed survey packets containing questions about career decidedness, level of anxiety, level of worry, personality, major certainty, and vocational identity. The survey packet consisted of the Career Decision Scale, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Penn State Worry Questionnaire, Big Five Personality Inventory, and a demographic questionnaire. Contrary to suggestions made by theoretical models that a curvilinear relationship exists between career indecision and level of anxiety, results of this study suggest that career indecision is positively related to level of anxiety. A significant positive relation was also found between career indecision and worry. Additionally, significant negative relations were found between career indecision and agreeableness and career indecision and conscientiousness. Gender differences were found on several of the variables with females reporting more certainty, more worry, more agreeableness, higher neuroticism, and higher career satisfaction than males. Moreover, seniors were found to be more certain in their careers and more conscientious than freshman students. In summary, the findings appear to contradict theoretical models of career decision-making and level of anxiety but also corroborate previous empirical research in career decision-making. These results suggest that many factors should be considered when assessing individuals seeking assistance with career decision-making.

Book excerpt: This study examined the relationships among high academic achievement as measured by ACT scores and participation in honors and/or gifted programming, high levels of self-reported interests and skills, and dysfunctional career thoughts. Participants were 143 first and second-year undergraduate students from two southeastern US universities. Assessments included a demographic survey, the Self-Directed Search (SDS), and the Career Thoughts Inventory (CTI). Results suggested a positive relationship between high academic achievement and a greater number of career options to consider pursuing. Specifically, those enrolled in gifted and/or honors programs reported significantly more interests and competencies in a number of domains based on Holland's RIASEC model. However, there was no relationship between high academic achievement or high interest and skills and dysfunctional career thoughts. In fact, non-honors students displayed significantly more decision-making confusion in comparison to those enrolled in honors programming. The findings have implications for both researchers and practitioners.

Book excerpt: Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and community college student success are two well-studied constructs. However, they largely exist as separate fields of interest, despite their shared links to numerous variables. This study consolidated a considerable number of findings from prior research to demonstrate the plausibility of ACEs being a common factor linked to many risk factors for and indicators of community college student success, including race/ethnicity, socio-economic status, first-generation student status, grade point average, course completion rates, college readiness, testing anxiety, student-instructor rapport, sleep quality, full versus part-time enrollment, and having parenting responsibilities while enrolled in college. Utilizing a cross-sectional, quantitative survey design paired with institutional data, the study investigated relationships among these variables and ACEs. Statistically significant relationships were found to exist between ACEs and race/ethnicity, socio-economic status, first-generation student status, grade point average, testing anxiety, and students’ subjective ratings of overall sleep quality, and results suggested a newer, more inclusive measure known as Expanded ACEs (Cronholm, 2015) might better predict outcomes for community college students compared to the original ten-item ACEs Questionnaire (Felitti et al., 1998). Implications for community college leaders, limitations of the study, and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: This study explored the differences between career decision-making self-efficacy (CDMSE) and perceived career barriers of students enrolled in the applied technology program compared to those enrolled in a college transfer program at a southeastern urban community college. Participants in the ex-post facto cross-sectional survey included 787 full and part-time students at the community college. There were three research questions: (1) Are there differences in mean scores of CDMSE and perceived career barriers of applied technology and college transfer community college students pursuing associate degree, diploma or certificate programs by demographic characteristics (gender, ethnicity, age, first-generational, employment, full and part-time student status)? (2) What is the predictive value of these demographic variables on CDMSE and perceived career barriers of applied technology and college transfer community college students pursuing associate degree, diploma or certificate programs? (3) Is there a relationship between CDMSE and perceived career barriers of applied technology and college transfer community college students pursuing associate degree, diploma or certificate programs? The Career Decision Self-Efficacy-Short Form and Career Barriers Inventory-Revised were administered to participants and data were analyzed using two sample t-tests, ANOVA and multiple regression models. There were significant differences between applied technology and college transfer students in terms of perception of career barriers and career decision-making self-efficacy. The applied technology students, who tended to be older, had higher career decision-making self-efficacy scores than the college transfer students and that did not change across the other demographic variables (gender, etc). The college transfer students, who tended to be younger, had higher perception of career barriers scores, and this did not change across demographic variables. Future research using a qualitat.

Book excerpt: Second, the results of the study indicated that students without a disability had higher levels of career maturity and self-advocacy than students with a disability; however, the self-efficacy scores were similar for students with and without a disability. Third, the results of the study focusing specifically on students with disabilities indicated that the career maturity of students who had a high level of self-advocacy was higher than for the students who had a low level of self-advocacy. However, there was no difference in levels of self-advocacy and career decision self-efficacy of college students with disabilities. Fourth, the results of this study focusing specifically on students with disabilities indicated that self-advocacy and career decision self-efficacy were the only variables that positively affected career maturity. Implications and directions for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: This study explored the effects of a semester-long, 2 credit career development course on the undecided college students. Participants included undergraduate students enrolled in the Career Development (COUN 105) class and comparison group students enrolled in Introductory Psychology (PSYX 100), and Intimate and Family Relationship (COUN 295) classes at The University of Montana. Students were assessed at the beginning and the end of the Spring and Fall semesters, 2010 by using the Career Decision Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (CDSE-SF; Betz & Taylor, 1983), Career Orientation scale, Career Decision Scale (Osipow et al., 1976), and Decisional Process Inventory (Hartung, 1994). The main purpose of this quantitative research study was to determine whether a career development course offered at The University of Montana would have a positive, neutral, or negative effect on career decision-making, self-efficacy, and other career decision making processes among undergraduate students. Based on (MANOVA) results, COUN 105 students significantly increased their sense of career self-efficacy as a function of the course. Based on these results, it was recommended for the development and implementation of career courses for undecided undergraduates become mandatory.
