For this study, first-generation college students were defined as students with parents who do not have any college education. The study examined students taken from a population of first-generation college students who are at least 18 years old, classified as a sophomore or higher at a university or college in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree, and enrolled as either full-time or part-time students. The theory guiding this research study was Ryan and Deci’s self-determination theory. The research questions expounded upon the individual, self-determined experiences of these students considering the formidable challenges of the college experience. Purposeful, criterion, and snowball sampling were used to select 12 research participants for the study. Data were collected from the participants using one-on-one interviews, focus groups, and participants’ letters. Data were analyzed using transcendental phenomenological methods to ascertain a combination of the textural and structural themes that identify the essence of this phenomenal experience. The modified Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen method of data analysis, as described by Moustakas, was used. The findings indicated that beginning in high school, first-generation college students need support and guidance. Support and guidance are critical during the first year of college for first-generation college students, but they will require support throughout their college journey. Finally, effective resources are needed to help first-generation college students overcome challenges and obstacles to achieve degree completion.

Factors influencing academic persistence among first-generation students include financial, emotional, academic, and social difficulties. A theoretical framework comprised of self-determination theory, causality orientation theory, and the theory of persistence guided the examination of academic persistence. A 99-item online survey instrument was administered to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled at a comprehensive regional university located in the southeastern region of the United States during the fall 2015 semester. Results indicate an interrelationship exists between autonomy and academic integration for first generation college students. Academic integration for first-generation college students negatively correlated with mother's highest level of education. Interrelationships exists between relatedness and social integration, as well as hours spent working and social integration for first-generation college students. Academic and social integration are primary elements of academic persistence. Attending to the basic psychological needs of autonomy and relatedness will foster academic and social integration among firstgeneration college students.

Book excerpt: One subset of underrepresented college students is first-generation students, whose parents or legal guardians did not attend college, which may make difficult their transition into college (Cataldi et al., 2018). Mattering, specifically feeling the attention, dependence, and importance of others, forestalls marginality, discourages self-isolation, and broadens academic and social success for students (Schlossberg, 1989). Because first-generation students do not take to their college experience an inherited sense of cultural and social capital that their non-first-generation peers do, other researchers argued that first-generation students are often limited from feeling as if they matter on campus (Katrevich & Arguete, 2017). According to Cataldi et al. (2018), students whose parents have not attended college face significant challenges accessing postsecondary education and then persisting once they do enroll. These challenges can explain the inequities that historically underrepresented students, such as first-generation students, face during their college experiences, challenges currently exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, the researcher interviewed eleven first-generation students at a midsized, suburban community college in the Northeast to discover how their sense of mattering with professors, peers, and other college agents in the midst of a pandemic contributed to their persistence. Through narrative re-storying of the students' lived experiences, the researcher uncovered four overarching themes, including the students' resilience, self-determination, self-efficacy, and burden of being first that informed the students' sense of mattering so that they were determined to complete their degrees even in the midst of a most unprecedented and chaotic time.

Book excerpt: Previous research has demonstrated that higher education creates distinct challenges to first-generation students’ well-being and motivation in university. Amid growing interest in psychological interventions to support first-generation students’ well-being in college, this study used the self-determination theory of basic needs as a framework to examine these students’ resources and strategies. Previous research within this framework has emphasized teaching practices to boost student engagement through support for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. However, much remains to be explored regarding students’ active role in need fulfillment and agentic efforts to reshape their learning environments. Beliefs and strategies regarding self-determination have also been linked to orientations toward autonomy satisfaction as asserted (self-reliant) or assisted (reliant on supportive environments and relationships). This study sought to extend our understanding of how inner and environmental resources intertwine in first generation students’ active pursuit of psychological well-being. First-generation students (n=212) were surveyed regarding their beliefs, perceived resources for psychological need satisfaction in college, and agentic engagement. This mixed-method study integrated findings from correlation and regression analyses, used to examine associations between student beliefs, perceived need support, and agentic engagement, with findings from the analysis of qualitative responses regarding students’ salient experiences of need satisfaction or frustration in college. Results demonstrate that first-generation students’ interdependent motives for college may coincide with either asserted or assisted orientations toward experiencing autonomy, but only an assisted orientation was linked to significantly greater overall satisfaction in college. However, alongside supportive teacher practices, the orientation toward asserted autonomy predicted increased agentic engagement in college classes. Participant narratives highlighted how environments and relationships in college life also were connected with first-generation students’ proactive efforts to fulfill their psychological needs. This research develops an understanding of how the college environment, instructors, and learners’ own agentic efforts help nurture first-generation students’ inner motivational resources

Criterion and purposeful sampling was used to select eight-12 participants. Data was collected through individual interviews, a focus group, and personal journals. The interview data was recorded using an audio device to provide accurate transcription. Data analysis was conducted using a transcendental phenomenological approach including the epoché, phenomenological reduction, imaginative variation, and meaning synthesizing producing themes to create implications and suggestions for future research.
