Book Synopsis Artificial Intelligence in Structural Engineering by : Ian Smith
Download or read book Artificial Intelligence in Structural Engineering written by Ian Smith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-07-15 with total page 518 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the state of the art of artificial intelligence techniques applied to structural engineering. The 28 revised full papers by leading scientists were solicited for presentation at a meeting held in Ascona, Switzerland, in July 1998. The recent advances in information technology, in particular decreasing hardware cost, Internet communication, faster computation, increased bandwidth, etc., allow for the application of new AI techniques to structural engineering. The papers presented deal with new aspects of information technology support for the design, analysis, monitoring, control and diagnosis of various structural engineering systems.
Book Synopsis Steel Bridge Fabrication Error Indexed Examples and Solutions by : Richard R. Greenfield
Download or read book Steel Bridge Fabrication Error Indexed Examples and Solutions written by Richard R. Greenfield and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research focuses on the development of a knowledge-based system in the domain of steel bridge fabrication errors using both rule-based reasoning (RBR) and case-based reasoning (CBR). Fabrication Error Indexed and Solutions (FIXS) was developed to combine the benefits of two previous research projects: 1) the rule-based Bridge Fabrication Error Solution Expert (BFX) system, and 2) its case-based counterpart (CB-BFX). Errors that occur during the fabrication of steel bridge members can have a costly effect on the performance of a bridge if not repaired properly. FIXS is an effort to provide guidance to the bridge engineer responsible for cost-effective solutions in a time sensitive manner. FIXS is implemented in the program language PROLOG and runs in the Windows environment as a stand-alone application. RBR facilities are provided by the expert system shell, MESS (Modest Expert System Shell). Similarly, CBR functions are provided by the simple case-based reasoner shell, SCBR (Simple Case Based Reasoning). The application has been designed for addition of new domain knowledge. The addition of new and updated knowledge allows the application to keep pace with changes in the steel bridge design industry and the methods of repairing errors.

Book Synopsis Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences by : Wade H. Shafer
Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 39 (thesis year 1994) a total of 13,953 thesis titles from 21 Canadian and 159 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 39 reports theses submitted in 1994, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Synopsis Six Sigma: SPC and TQM in Manufacturing and Services by : Geoff Tennant
Download or read book Six Sigma: SPC and TQM in Manufacturing and Services written by Geoff Tennant and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ’Six Sigma’ is a quality concept initially used by Motorola and then developed beyond manufacturing by GE Capital. It has underpinned that organisation's phenomenal success. In essence it is a way of scientifically measuring your current success (or failure) rate in relation to customer expectations (regardless of industry sector) and then ensuring that improvements are made. Six Sigma is the application of a new model of working, statistical measurement and process control to TQM. The ’normal’ position of businesses today is three sigma (or a defect rate of about 5-10%); six sigma - a defect rate of less than four in every million - is the ultimate goal. This book explains the concept of Six Sigma and its statistical basis; explains the benefits which can be achieved by using it in any company and then outlines how to implement such a programme.
