Book excerpt: Presented in this report is a detailed description of the procedure to be followed to develop a knowledge-based computerized expert system for determining whether to rehabilitate, improve, replace, abandon, or just to routinely maintain an old highway bridge in the VDOT road system. Based on extensive interviews with bridge engineering experts, the type of data needed, the rules to be used and interference procedures are described, along with an example for the expert system called DOB (for Disposition of Old Bridges). Future studies are expected to program this information into a format suitable for use in a personal computer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge-based expert systems have growing applicability to the transportation industry. A previous K-TRAN Project, KU/KSU-93-2, "An Expert System for Fabrication Error Solutions", developed an expert system that examines and recommends corrective action for fabrication errors detected in the plant for steel bridge members. Expert systems have been used to solve a broad range of problems which match the various functional areas of transportation engineering such as: planning, design, operation and control, management, maintenance and rehabilitation. The capabilities of the Bridge Fabrication Expert System (BFX) have been enhanced and the knowledge base expanded. Significant improvements have been made in the system/user interface. The new version of Level 5 Object with added functionality was tested with BFX and all systems worked providing improved input/output capability.

Book excerpt: This report describes the results of the third of a four-part study dealing with the use of a computerized expert system to assist bridge engineers in their structures management program. In this phase of the study, software (called DOBES) was written incorporating the knowledge base presented in the second phase of the study (VTRC Report No. 88-R6, November 1987) relating to the disposition of old bridges. DOBES provides recommendations as to whether a bridge should be rehabilitated, improved, replaced, abandoned, or simply maintained. A future study will test, evaluate, and refine this program for eventual operational use.

Book excerpt: Engineering, medicine, computer science, mathematics, and business all use applications of expert systems for problem solving that would normally require human skill. These expert systems solve varied problems with a similar procedure - so that knowledge of their use in other specialties will inevitably benefit yours. Expert Systems: Applications for Structural, Transportation, and Environmental Engineering provides a comprehensive, concise treatment of knowledge-based expert systems that introduces you to the flavor, concepts, and capacity of this powerful procedure. Expert Systems covers preliminary design of three-dimensional grids, design systems for low rise industrial buildings, preliminary design of frameworks, bridge design systems, and retaining wall design - especially the methodologies for these applications to structural design. The author presents design standards, typical expert systems for construction engineering and management applications, and the underlying concepts of expert systems, emphasizing bridge analysis, rating, and management. He describes the methodology and applications which aid the transportation and highway engineer in planning, design, and operation and addresses several applications in the fields of environmental and water resources engineering. Automation of the advice-giving of experts is used in design, process planning, manufacturing schedule, quality control, and diagnosis by a range of disciplines. Expert Systems increases your awareness of the versatility of expert systems in these disciplines and offers the theory and algorithms you need to use expert systems in design, maintenance, and construction.

Book excerpt: This report presents a database of case histories of incidents due to impact, fire and scour for sixteen bridges in Wisconsin. It is intended to expand and use such case history and other relevant data in a future study to develop a decision support system. Such decision support system can aid bridge engineers take appropriate actions when rapid response is required in emergency cases such as major bridge damage or failure. The case history information presented here was assembled using available archived data from various DOT offices and through interviews with various active and retired staff of the WisDOT Districts and the City of Milwaukee. Each case history document includes information regarding any associated event, remediation, and past repair and maintenance. Essential structural and geometric data is also included with each case history document. As a part of this study, incident response procedures for WisDOT and the City of Milwaukee were developed through consultation with appropriate staff of those offices. The database is searchable with keywords and can be accessed through the web. User's manuals for both users and system administrators are included in the report.

It gives a brief description of the game of bridge and of expert systems and then describes how an expert system shell was integrated with a conventional C program to create a bridge program. The functional design of the program is described. It concludes with some ideas for enhancements and an evaluation of the results of the project."--Author's abstract.

Book excerpt: The major goal of the Bridge Construction Expert System (BCX) is to assist young bridge engineers and inspectors in determining the extent of damage due to construction errors and specifying the necessary repair solution. BCX was created to provide a unified repair procedure by gathering domain expertise from designers, construction engineers, inspectors and contractors. The goal was to create a system that would provide the most suitable repair in a timely manner and provide training to prevent future errors from occurring. The scope of the system was limited to pier footings with the exception of drilled shafts. The development strategy was designed to deliver a system that addresses the real needs and that will function as a tool for training and determining solutions to construction errors. The majority of the knowledge used for the system was acquired through interviews with the experts. The system was designed in three modules with submodules to facilitate future expansion.

Book excerpt: KYBAS is a prototype knowledge-based expert system to examine the use of artificial intelligence in the area of bridge engineering. KYBAS has been developed for highway girder bridge analysis and design. The knowledge in KYBAS represents expertise regarding various materials, structural types, finite element limitations, etc., used in the analysis and design process. The KYBAS expert system rules are invoked to make a preliminary design recommendation and/or to assist in the finite element modelling decisions. These decisions are used to generate a finite element analysis model. Numeric modules then perform the prescribed analysis. Thus, the numeric modules are coupled with the expert system to perform analysis and design in one heterogeneous code. This paper examines certain issues in knowledge based expert system development and its integration with the numeric code. For the covering abstract of the Conference see IRRD Abstract no. 807839.
