Book excerpt: A combined experimental and descriptive study was carried out to explore the effect of music on the reading/language arts performance of first graders. Children were randomly assigned to one of three groups: Orff-Schulwerk music, visual arts or control. Following premeasures, the music and art groups met three times weekly for thirty minutes from December to May. Pre and post measures included psychometric and edumetric tests: the Metropolitan Reading Readiness, the California Test of Basic Skills and the Botel Milestones criterion referenced reading test. Related areas of measurement were metalinguistic awareness, auditory-visual integration, following directions and concept development by the Goodenough-Harris "Draw-a-Person" test. Quantitative findings were treated by comparison plotting and analysis of variance, including mean differences, correlation and regression analysis with confidence level determination. Qualitative procedures and assessments included documentation with field notes, observations, taped teacher: child interviews, monthly work samples, individual background data and assessments for following directions. Qualitative results were treated by retrospective analysis of field notes, interviews, observations and artifacts. These analyses revealed that the music group began at a statistically significantly lower level that the other two, though undiscriminated by the Metropolitan Reading Readiness test. By the end of the program, they had imporved to the level of the other groups in reading and related areas. Individual analysis of initially poor performers in all three groups showed that this improvement was not simply a growth spurt, but rather the effect of the music treatment. The regression analysis revealed the strong impact of music treatment on concept development and reading performance, the latter not at a high confidence level. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an after-school music program on music underachievers' musical achievement, social development and self-esteem. A true-experimental pretest-posttest design was used and included 14 hours of treatment time. The subjects (N = 66), fifth-grade students were randomly selected from the lowest quartile of scores on Colwell's Music Achievement Test (MAT), which was administered to all fifth-grade students (N = 494) in three Korean elementary schools. The treatment group (n =33) experienced a movement-based after-school music program (MAMP); the control group (n = 33) did not receive the after-school music program. Measurements included sections of Colwell's Music Achievement Test (MAT), Kim's Social Development Scale (SDS), and Hare's Self-Esteem Scale (HSS). The researcher and music teachers of each school administered all measurements. Fourteen treatment lessons occurred over fourteen weeks. One-way analyses of covariance tests were used to test for post-test differences between groups. A significant difference was found in music achievement total scores of the MAT with the treatment group scoring higher scores than the control group. There were no significant differences for interval and meter discrimination tests of MAT. There were no significant differences between treatment and control groups in the post-test scores of the Social Development Scale (SDS) and the Self-Esteem Scale (HSS). However, for both tests, mean scores increased for the treatment group and decreased for the control group. Results from this study suggest that a movement-based after-school music program promotes music underachievers' musical growth and may also support music underachievers' social development and self-esteem.

Book excerpt: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of listening to music while reading on reading comprehension performance. The participants of this study were made up of 129 eighth grade students. The study was modeled by the randomized posttest-only control group design. A Music Appreciation Test and A Reading Comprehension Test, originally developed by the researcher, were used to determine the students' music preferences and reading comprehension performance, respectively. The results showed that the reading comprehension performance of the students who read the passage with their non-favored non-verbal music, non-favored verbal music, and favored verbal music were significantly poorer than those students who did not listen music while reading the same passage. Importantly, the current results also demonstrated that the reading comprehension performance of the students who listened to their favored instrumental music while reading did not considerably differ from the reading comprehension performance of those who did not listen to music.

Book excerpt: The problem of the study was to investigate the effects of a regular program of practice in note-reading on the rate of word-reading (RWR) in below normal readers. Level of pretest RWR scores, sex, and age were identified as variables in the study. The purpose of the study was 1) to evaluate the RWR gains of fifth grade students of below normal RWR who were given a six-week program of daily note-reading practice on a keyboard instrument, and 2) to compare these results with the RWR gain of fifth grade students of below normal RWR who were not given the program of daily note-reading practice, when pretest RWR scorews, sex, and age were held constant. The research was a separate sample pretest-posttest experimental-control equivalent materials true-experimental design. Acievement in RWR was sampled in one grade level of below normal readers who were enrolled in remedial reading classes. The instrument used for measurement was the "Basic Reading Rate Scale" (BRRS), Forms A and B, by Miles A. Tinker and revised by Ronald P. Carver. The sample of thirty-six subjects consisted of students who were enrolled in fifth grade remedial reading classes in the six elementary schools of the Grandview Consolidated School District No. 4, Grandview, Missouri. All schools have predominantly white populations and are in the lower-through upper-middle socio-economic bracket. Although all subjects in fifth grade remedial reading were used, eighteen subjects were randomly designated as the experimental group, and seventeen were randomly designated as the control group. Complete sets of data for thirty-three subjects were obtained. Form A of the BRRS was administered as the pretest. Subjects in the experimental group were instructed to practice for speed for ten minutes each school day for six weeks on specially-prepared note-reading sheets. These exercises increased gradually in difficulty according to numbers of notes played. All subjects were then post-tested with Form B of the BRRS, and the data were computer-processed for statistical significance by one-way analysis of variance. Planned comparisons were analyzed by a Scheffé test of difference between means. No significant gain in RWR was demonstrated by subjects in the experimental group as a whole, but subjects who pretested in the lower half of the group did increase significantly over the control group. No significant difference was demonstrated according to sex or age. Within the limitations and circumstances of the investigation, the program of note-reading practice appears to have been effective onnly for increasing the RWR of very slow readers. Further investigation under other circumstances is warrented before positive conclusions can be reached.
