Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on decades of teaching experience and the collective wisdom of dozens of the most creative theorists in the country, Michael R. Rogers's diverse survey of music theory--one of the first to comprehensively survey and evaluate the teaching styles, techniques, and materials used in theory courses--is a unique reference and research tool for teachers, theorists, secondary and postsecondary students, and for private study. This revised edition of Teaching Approaches in Music Theory: An Overview of Pedagogical Philosophies features an extensive updated bibliography encompassing the years since the volume was first published in 1984. In a new preface to this edition, Rogers references advancements in the field over the past two decades, from the appearance of the first scholarly journal devoted entirely to aspects of music theory education to the emergence of electronic advances and devices that will provide a supporting, if not central, role in the teaching of music theory in the foreseeable future. With the updated information, the text continues to provide an excellent starting point for the study of music theory pedagogy. Rogers has organized the book very much like a sonata. Part one, "Background," delineates principal ideas and themes, acquaints readers with the author's views of contemporary musical theory, and includes an orientation to an eclectic range of philosophical thinking on the subject; part two, "Thinking and Listening," develops these ideas in the specific areas of mindtraining and analysis, including a chapter on ear training; and part three, "Achieving Teaching Success," recapitulates main points in alternate contexts and surroundings and discusses how they can be applied to teaching and the evaluation of design and curriculum. Teaching Approaches in Music Theory emphasizes thoughtful examination and critique of the underlying and often tacit assumptions behind textbooks, materials, and technologies. Consistently combining general methods with specific examples and both philosophical and practical reasoning, Rogers compares and contrasts pairs of concepts and teaching approaches, some mutually exclusive and some overlapping. The volume is enhanced by extensive suggested reading lists for each chapter.

Although the book draws upon theoretical concepts it is easy to read and to follow. Readers learn to distinguish between structural and decorative tones within horizontal triad outlines, recognize melodic shapes associated with triad outlines in various positions, and interpret overall melodic shapes within entire phrase. Material is arranged logically for learning basic tonal relationships, phrases, and common shapes and motions in melodies. Chapters contain s short explanatory section, exercises in the melodic pattern to be studied, melodic analysis, and melodies for sight singing.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Simplified Sight-Singing: A Course in Music Reading Based Upon the Study of Intervals A few minutes of each class period is all the time that is required to cover this simple presentation in a year, and those few minutes will be more than compensated for by the time saved in learning new music, and in the elimination of problems of intonation. The necessary theory is presented in a simplified manner with the main emphasis on the develop' ment of the ability to recognize, hear, and sing with speed and accuracy the intervals occurring Within the octave. It is only necessary to learn the sound of eleven basic intervals, which the student will readily master because they are here presented as the first two tones of widely known tunes, or, as in the case of a few, newly composed melodies that imme' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. During my long experience as a teacher of Sight-Singing I have constantly felt the want of exercises far more interesting than those usually placed before the student. There is always, moreover, a great difficulty in dividing voices into " parts " for complete harmony in the ordinary sight-singing class, owing to the preponderance of, for instance, basses at one time and tenors at another, or the occasional absence of one entire part. For this reason, therefore, it is some time before the student has the opportunity of taking his part in harmonized exercises, and of holding his own against other parts, a source of great interest to each singer. To meet this want, the following exercises are all written in complete harmony, each part within the compass of one octave, C to C, and therefore within easy range of all voices, male and female; and while care has been taken not to exceed the compass of the octave, each part has been so arranged as to extend the whole compass of the octave, thus giving the student, as far as possible, the practice of extended intervals. The Tonic Sol-fa notation is placed under the ordinary notation in order to increase the general utility of the book....
