Book excerpt: This investigation studies in detail the changes occurring in near wake dynamics associated with base drag reduction on bluff bodies achieved via boundary layer modification. A wedge model and a flat plate model are used to study bluff bodies over a range of Reynolds number of 0.8 x 10 6 -0.3 x 10 6 . The boundary layer on both these models is modified using fore-body surface roughness, by applying sand grains with a mean diameter of 2.2 mm to their fore-body surfaces. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) measurements, as well as simultaneous PIV and time-resolved base pressure measurements, are performed on these models in order to determine the near wake changes associated with base drag reduction. For the wedge model, the PIV measurements capture a downstream region of x/h = 0-1.5, whereas, for the flat plate model, the PIV measurements are performed at three different distances downstream, x/h = 0-7, 7-14 and 14-21. The PIV results are analyzed using Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) in order to identify the changes in coherent structures associated with base drag reduction. It is observed from the POD results that, when there is a reduction in base drag, the vortex shedding in the near wake becomes more organized, its strength decreases, and the vortex convects faster. This result differs from those obtained in earlier studies, where base drag reduction is achieved by interrupting vortex shedding. In order to reconstruct near wake dynamics simultaneous PIV and time-resolved pressure measurements are used. Using Linear Stochastic Estimation (LSE)-POD technique, the cycle-to-cycle variation in vortex shedding is accurately captured. It is observed from the reconstruction that for the smooth test cases, the cycle-to-cycle variations in the vortex shedding are significantly higher, as compared to the rough test cases.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents an experimental investigation of drag reduction devices on a bluff body in ground effect. It has previously been shown that the addition of end-plate tabs to a rectangular based bluff body with an aspect ratio of 4 is effective in eliminating vortex shedding and reducing drag for low Reynolds number flows. In the present study a square based bluff body, both with and without tabs, will be tested under the same conditions, except this time operating within proximity to a ground plane in order to mimic the properties of bounded aerodynamics that would be present for a body in ground effect.

Book excerpt: These Proceedings contain the papers and oral discussions presented at the Symposium on AERODYNAMIC DRAG MECHANISMS of Bluff Bodies and Road Vehides held at the General Motors Research Laboratories in Warren, Michigan, on September 27 and 28, 1976. This international, invitational Symposium was the twentieth in an annual series, each one having been in a different technical discipline. The Symposia provide a forum for areas of science and technology that are of timely interest to the Research Laboratories as weIl as the technical community at large, and in which personnel of the Laboratories are actively involved. The Symposia furnish an opportunity for the exchange of ideas and current knowledge between participating research specialists from educational, industrial arid governmental institutions and serve to stimulate future research activity. The present world-wide energy situation makes it highly desirable to reduce the force required to move road vehicles through the atmosphere. A significant amount of the total energy consumed for transportation is expended in overcoming the aerodynamic resistance to motion of these vehicles. Reductions in this aerodynamic drag can therefore have a large impact on ground transportation energy requirements. Although aerodynamic development work on road vehides has been performed for many years, it has not been widely reported or accompanied by much basic research.

Book excerpt: Aerodynamics of bluff bodies has gained the attention of aerodynamicists all over the world in recent times, primarily because of importance given to drag reduction by the automobile industry. Since pressure drag accounts for bulk of the drag of bluff bodies, any technique to manipulate and control the overall pressure field around such bodies to achieve base pressure rise causes reduction of drag. Interestingly, not many works are found on 3- dimensional bluff bodies such as spheres. Currently, interest in spherical airships is growing, triggered by the tourism industry. However, the high drag and management of highly unsteady wake of spheres are some of the aerodynamic issues that need to be addressed. This book offers the concept of passive natural ventilation as a potential solution. Natural ventilation occurs when the stagnation zone and the base are interconnected through an internal duct, which causes a jet flow through the center. Based on several years of experimental research, it is shown that natural ventilation of a sphere leads to substantial drag reduction and reduced wake unsteadiness at high Reynolds numbers.

Book excerpt: This study is focused on the experimental investigation of an extended rear view mirror and the development of near-wake flow in an effort to reduce the overall base pressure drag of the model. The passive flow control technique was employed through a circumferential slot of the rearward facing edge of a bluff body to deliver a passive jet in the direction of the free stream. The passive jet employs the surrounding high energy free stream air through an intake slot in the front of the model in order to enhance the mixing layer of the immediate wake region in addition to energizing the wake area flow through entrainment. These effects subsequently caused a reduction of the effects of adverse pressure gradients that are associated with separation of the free stream shear layer over the over the passive jet model surface. The jet produced along the rear surface not only increased the turbulence of the mixing layer, but can also be directly tied to the coherent nature of the wake area flow. Using Two Dimensional Two Component (2D2C) in addition to Two Dimensional Three component (2D3C) Particle Image Velocimetry applied to our model in an open circuit wind tunnel, results show a substantial reduction in the overall wake area for which we attribute to the enhancements due to mixing effects of the passive jet interacting with the free stream shear layer. Flow entrainment from enhanced vorticity through the production coherent structures are believed to initiate the mixing layer earlier, in addition to increase the growth rate of the mixing layer while also attributing to the increase in the overall shear layer thickness as well. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) was carried out on an automobile mirror model with three configurations in order to investigate the effects of a baseline model including the absence of a passive jet mixing, a modified model including a small area circumferential jet and a heavily modified model including a large circumferential slot area jet. In combination with PIV, Partial Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) also referred to as the Karhunen Loeve expansion, was also applied in order to analyze the underlying large scale structures and dominant behaviors that would otherwise be hard to identify in the immediate wake flow structure. The mirror models used for testing was designed and produced to provide three specific testing configurations, baseline, Jet 1 and Jet 2. In order to proceed with the testing of the mirror models, the design and manufacturing of a reinforced force balance mounting apparatus was necessary in order to provide a more rigid and secure platform to measure aerodynamic loads of the mirror and future designs. The nature of the new design includes multiple support location in order to more equally distribute the loading in addition to bearings to assist in experiments that require a rotation of the model in order to increase the angle with respect to the free steam flow.

Book excerpt: This book includes the carefully edited contributions to the United Engineering Foundation Conference: The Aerodynamics of Heavy Vehicles: Trucks, Buses and Trains held in Monterey, California from December 2-6, 2002. This conference brought together 90 leading engineering researchers discussing the aerodynamic drag of heavy vehicles. The book topics include a comparison of computational fluid dynamics calculations using both steady and unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes, large-eddy simulation, and hybrid turbulence models and experimental data obtained from wind tunnel experiments. Advanced experimental techniques including three-dimensional particle image velocimetry are presented as well, along with their use in evaluating drag reduction devices.
