Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the effects of nozzle operating conditions on the development of nozzle-exit boundary layers of highly heated air free jets is reported in this paper. The total pressure measurements in the nozzle-exit boundary layer were obtained at a range of jet Mach numbers from 0.1 to 0.97 and jet total temperatures up to 900 K. The analysis of results shows that the nozzle-exit laminar boundary-layer development depends only on the nozzle-exit Reynolds number. For the nozzle-exit turbulent boundary layer, however, it appears that the effects of the jet total temperature on the boundary-layer integral characteristics are independent from the effect of the nozzle-exit Reynolds number. This surprising finding has not yet been reported. Further, laminar boundary-layer profiles were compared with the Pohlhausen solution for a flat-wall converging channel and an acceptable agreement was found only for low Reynolds numbers. For turbulent boundary layers, the dependence of the shape factor on relative Mach numbers at a distance of one momentum thickness from the nozzle wall resembles Spence's prediction. Finally, the calculated total pressure loss coefficient was found to depend on the nozzle-exit Reynolds number for the laminar nozzle-exit boundary layer, while for the turbulent exit boundary layer this coefficient appears to be constant.

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted to determine dynamic characteristics of a circular, fully developed, laminar free jet. Complete velocity profiles are presented at Reynolds numbers of 437 and 1839 at 0, 3, 6, 10, 15, and 25 diameters from the nozzle exit. Centerline velocity decay was obtained over a range of Reynolds numbers from 255 to 1839. Also presented are the angles of spread associated with the diffusion of the jet downstream of the nozzle. Where possible, results are compared with those obtained for laminar jets having an initially flat or uniform velocity profile at the nozzle exit.

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the flow characteristics of a circular free helium jet having an initially uniform velocity profile. Complete velocity profiles are presented at Reynolds numbers of 1027 and 4571 at 0, 3, 6, 10, 15, and 20 nozzle diameters (where possible) from the nozzle exit. Centerline velocity decay and potential core length were obtained over a range of Reynolds numbers from 155 to 5349 at distances up to and including 25 nozzle diameters from the nozzle exit. The angles of spread associated with the diffusion of the jet downstream of the nozzle are also given. Axial jet momentum flux and entrained mass flux, at various distances downstream of the nozzle, are presented as a function of the jet Reynolds number.

Book excerpt: A review of a comprehensive experimental investigation of the heat transfer and boundary layer in 30 deg to 15 deg and 60 deg to 15 deg conical nozzles is presented. The experiments were conducted with air at a stagnation temperature of 539 K (970 R) and throat Reynolds numbers based on a diameter ranging from 6 x 10 to the 5th power to 5 x 10 to the 6th power. Nozzle wall surface finish was varied from a smooth machine finish to a 826 x 10 to the minus 6th power cm (325 x 10 to the minus 6th in.) rms sandblasted finish. Measured heat transfer and wall temperatures are tabulated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes an experimental investigation of the effects of nozzle exit boundary layer conditions on turbulent mixing in free jets. Mean velocity and turbulence measurements were obtained in flow fields produced by several axisymmetric and two dimensional nozzles with exit velocities in the range of 30 to 800 ft/sec. With tripped turbulent initial boundary layers, spatial mixing rates were found to be independent of jet exit velocity, the mean flow fields scaled with nozzle exit dimensions, and the same results were obtained with different air supply facilities. With laminar and transitional initial nozzle boundary layers the core lengths were found to be unpredictable, showing large changes with both nozzle exit dimensions and velocity, and displaying a strong dependence on air supply facility characteristics. A clear conclusion from our investigation was that in experimental testing of models that incorporate free jets the nozzle wall boundary layer must be turbulent to eliminate a frequent source of poor agreement between model and full scale hardware performance. Book excerpt: The boundary layer thickness and displacement thickness were experimentally evaluated at the exit plane of an arc heated 9.492 inch exit diameter hypervelocity (M> or =8) contoured nozzle for both equilibrium and nonequilibrium flows. It was concluded that the boundary layers were turbulent and the use of a plenum chamber decreases the displacement thickness for identical arc heater stagnation chamber conditions. (Author).

Book excerpt: The second part of a three-part report on the effects of acoustic excitation on jet mixing includes the results of an experimental investigation directed at resolving the question of poor excitability of some of the heated jets. The theoretical predictions discussed in Part 1 are examined to find explanations for the observed discrepancies between the measured and the predicted results. Additional testing was performed by studying the self excitation of the shock containing hot jets and also by exciting the jet by sound radiated through source tubes located externally around the periphery of the jet. The effects of nozzle-exit boundary layer conditions on jet excitability was also investigated. It is concluded that high-speed, heated jet mixing rates and consequently also the jet excitability strongly depends on nozzle exit boundary layer conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author's first monograph on turbulent jets, in 1936, dealt solely with a free submerged jet. Since that time, the theory of the turbulent jet has been developed in many published works both in the USSR and abroad: it has been enriched with a large amount of experimental material and has been applied in many new fields of engineering. In the last 10 years very substantial progress has been made, and it has now become possible to go beyond the free submerged jet and to solve the problem of a jet in a stream of fluid, to take into account the interaction between the jet and solid walls, to ascertain the relationship between the contour of the jet and the ratio of its density to the density of the surrounding medium, and to establish the characteristic features of a supersonic jet. This monograph contains the results of further research by the author and his colleagues, as well as a critical reappraisal of the more important theoretical and experimental data published by other investigators. The first section deals with the theory of a turbulent jet of incompressible fluid. It gives a systematic analysis of numerous experimental data on velocity profiles, temperature, and the impurity concentration, as well as the outlines of the turbulent mixing lone. The second section sets forth the theory of turbulent gas jets, including strongly preheated and supersonic jets. The theory of free turbulence in a gas, suitable in principle for any degree of compressibility, is revised, and the equations are derived for motion and heat exchange in the boundary layer of a jet at very high temperature. The third section solves several problems of the spreading of jets in finite and semifinite space, and the fourth section describes various applications of the theory of jets, many of which are reported for the first time or have been significantly revised.
