Book excerpt: The present study was an experimental investigation of the laminar surface heat transfer distribution about cones. The study was conducted in the Princeton University hypersonic nitrogen facility and covered a wide range of geometries and test conditions in an attempt to evaluate the numerical accuracy, theoretical modeling, and range of applicability of the several theories which are available. Cones, varying from 3 degrees to 30 degrees, with two nose bluntnesses, and lengths from one to eight inches were examined over a range of test conditions: Mach numbers from 16 to 25, and unit Reynolds numbers from 7,000 to 40,000 per inch. The detailed heat transfer distributions, covering the full range of 'nose dominated', 'merged', and 'weak interaction' regimes, were compared with several theoretical prediction techniques. A critical review of the modeling involved in the theories, as compared to the experiments, is presented. (Author).

Download or read book Comparisons of Experimental and Theoretical Heat Transfer to a Yawed Sphere-cone Model at Supersonic Speeds written by Lionel Pasiuk and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theoretical laminar heat transfer rates to a sphere-cone model at angles of yaw up to 18 degrees are compared with wind tunnel data measured at Mach numbers of 3.2 and 4.8. Two methods of heat transfer prediction have been chosen--the methods of Beckwith and VaglioLaurin. These require that the inviscid streamline pattern on the surface of the yawed spherecone model be known. These steamlines have been calculated from measured surface pressure distributions. The theory of Beckwith agrees reasonably well with the experimental data.
Book Synopsis Laminar Heat-transfer and Pressure Measurements at a Mach Number of 6 on a Sharp and Blunt 15° Half-angle Cones at Angles of Attack Up to 90° by : Raul Jorge Conti

This book was released on 1961 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two circulation conical configurations having 15° half-angles were tested in laminar boundary layer at a Mach number of 6 and angles of attack up to 90°. One cone had a sharp nose and a fineness ratio of 1.87 and the other had a spherically blunted nose with a bluntness ratio of 0.1428 and a fineness ratio of 1.66. Pressure measurements and schlieren pictures of the flow showed that near-conical flow existed above 70° high pressure areas were present near the base and the bow shock wave was considerably curved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was made of the recovery factor and heat-transfer distributions on a set of cone-models incorporating annular cavities. This study is the second part of a two-part program. The first section contained measurements of the pressure distributions. The results show that the recovery factor in laminar, hypersonic cavity flow is almost constant within the cavity and downstream of reattachment, and is very close to the laminar attached-flow value. In the immediate vicinity of reattachment, the recovery factor is slightly higher than this value (less than 5%). The lowest values of the heat-transfer coefficient are found on the cavity floors, where a minimum of about 10 to 20% of the attached-flow value is reached. The highest values of the heat-transfer coefficient are in the immediate vicinity of reattachment. An average reattachment heattransfer coefficient of about three times the basic cone heat-transfer coefficient was measured on one cavity model. (Author).

Book Synopsis An Experimental Investigation of Hypersonic Flow Around a Slender Cone by : Edward M. Schmidt
Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of Hypersonic Flow Around a Slender Cone written by Edward M. Schmidt and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper presents the results of an experimental survey of the flow field around a sharp, 10 degree half angle cone. Tests were conducted at a free stream Mach number of 7.7 for a range of free stream Reynolds numbers of 110,000 to 171,000 per foot. Surface heat transfer data indicates that the cone boundary layer varies from laminar to fully developed turbulent over this Reynolds number range. The base pressure variation was also obtained throughout this range of Reynolds numbers; from this, the interrelation between the surface boundary layer properties and the base pressure is discussed. A series of tests were conducted in the near wake region at two different values of free stream Reynolds number, i.e., 330,000 and 1,650,000 per foot, corresponding to a completely laminar and fully developed turbulent surface boundary layer at the cone shoulder, respectively. The relationship between boundary layer properties and near wake properties is studied. (Author).
Book Synopsis Measurements of Hypersonic Turbulent Heat Transfer on a Highly Cooled Cone by : Donald M. Wilson
Download or read book Measurements of Hypersonic Turbulent Heat Transfer on a Highly Cooled Cone written by Donald M. Wilson and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulent boundary layer heat transfer rates were measured on a thin-walled slender cone at a free-stream Mach number of 5.0. Wall to stagnation temperature ratios from 0.15 to 0.40 were obtained by pre-cooling the model using liquid nitrogen. Tests at a wide range of Reynolds numbers were conducted by varying the tunnel supply pressure; thus providing data for both laminar and mixed laminar-turbulent types of boundary layers. The experimental results obtained were compared with existing theories which predict convective heat transfer coefficients. These comparisons indicate that the data corresponding to a 760R supply temperature verify the predictions of Winkler and Cha; however, data acquired at a supply temperature of 1160R substantiate the predictions of Spalding and Chi. This book was released on 1973 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents heat-transfer-rate measurements on sharp and blunt 10-deg half-angle cones at angles of attack between -9 and +10 deg in a low-density, hypersonic wind tunnel. Circumferential and longitudinal distributions are presented for cold wall conditions for a range at Mach and Reynolds numbers. The effect of source-like flows was studied by utilizing both conical and contoured expansion nozzles with the same free-stream similarity parameters and model wall temperatures. Comparisons are made with previously published experimental and theoretical results. (Author).
