Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Experimental Course of Chemistry for Agricultural Students A farmer does not need to be a chemist; at the same time he needs the training in accuracy, careful observation, and experimental method which a study of chemistry, properly carried out, imparts, and he needs a knowledge of the ele mentary principles of chemical change and of the properties of certain chemical substances, both inorganic and organic. The customary four years' course of inorganic and organic chemistry goes far beyond the requirements of an agricultural student, and is usually beyond the time at his disposal. The following course is designed to enable an agricultural student to acquire the knowledge and training he needs by a short experimental study of the chemical substances with which agriculture is concerned, his attention being directed at the same time to the practical application of each subject dealt with to rural industry. The course upon which the work is founded has been in use during the past three years in some of the grammar schools and evening continuation schools in the rural districts of Essex, and has also been used in the County Technical Laboratories at Chelmsford by the students of the agricultural classes, and as a preparatory course for elementary school teachers who wish to qualify themselves to teach chemistry in the agricultural parts of the county. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Experimental Course of Chemistry for Agricultural Students In the present state of scientific education, or, more correctly speaking, education in science, in this country, the instructor is frequently called upon to face the problem of teaching a particular science to students engaged or about to be engaged in some special industry. The problem is confessedly a difficult one to deal with practically, and many diverse views are held respecting its feasibility, or even the desirability of attempting its solution. The diversity of opinion no doubt represents the differences in the mode of treatment to which the various branches of science lend themselves. To the majority of educationists it is evident that instruction in science is, as a mental discipline, of a very high order of importance, quite apart from any technical knowledge in relation to any special industry. More particularly does this apply in the case of those occupied in productive industries of all kinds, whether manufacturing or agricultural, in the widest meaning of the term. Starting with the very reasonable assumption that those who are concerned with agriculture should know, at least, something of the general principles of chemical science, the question presents itself to all who are interested in the welfare of agriculture - How and When is such instruction to be given ? The elementary schools, especially in country districts, are confessedly feeble in their science teaching, even if they attempt it at all. There is a crying need for good secondary and technical schools in rural centres, but little progress has as yet been made in this direction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Food of Plants: An Introduction to Agricultural Chemistry This little book has been written as an experimental introduction to Agricultural Chemistry for beginners, and I have therefore not assumed any knowledge of chemistry on the part of the reader. On the other hand, he will have, in the course of carrying out the experiments described in the text, occasionally to perform operations which he cannot fully understand the meaning of without some little knowledge of chemistry. It would, therefore, be advisable to combine the study of the Chemistry Primer with the study of this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Laboratory Guide: A Manual of Practical Chemistry for Colleges and Schools, Specially Arranged for Agricultural Students The student using this Guide will do so with the greatest effect if, while he is going through the experiments on manipulation described in Part I., he will attend a course of Lectures on Inorganic Chemistry, and study the corresponding chapters of a text - book of Chemistry. The lessons on Manipulation may then be readily mastered by two or three hours' practice in the laboratory each week during a period of four months; an additional hour or so each week will be requisite for posting up the 'laboratory book' with the results of the practical work. It should be used in connection with a course of experimental lectures and laboratory exercises. The matter has been selected so as to meet the needs of those that can devote but one year to the study of chemistry, and also to serve as a suitable basis for future work in the case of students who desire to pursue the subject further. In writing the book, the author has naturally had in mind the needs of his own students, over six hundred in' number, who are pre paring for careers in chemistry, pharmacy, medicine, engineer ing, or agriculture, or who desire a course in chemistry for work in other natural sciences or as a means of general culture. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dairy Chemistry This work is the outgrowth of a course of lectures given by the author for a number of years to the students of the Agricultural Department of the University of Minnesota. During recent years material progress has been made in dairying, and in writing this book it has been the aim briefly to incorporate the results of the more important investigations on the subject. In the preparation of the work extensive use has been made of the bulletins and reports of the Agricultural Experiment Stations of the United States and of other works on the subject. It is the aim to present in as concise a form as possible the principal changes that take place in the handling of milk and in its manufacture into butter and cheese. While our present knowledge of some phases of the subject is incomplete, there are many facts that are known and have been found very useful as an aid in the production of dairy products of the highest sanitary and market value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Student's Book on Soils and Manures I hope the student will carry out the experiments given here as well as those given in my earlier Lessons on Soil. The analytical methods are put in the Appendix for the convenience Of those who want them; it is not intended that all should be carried out by the student but only such (if any) as may be desirable. I have assumed no knowledge of chemistry: all the same the student will need some chemical explanations, but these must be supplied by the teacher. The vexed question of how much pure chemistry is needed for an agricultural course admits Of no general answer: the teacher alone can settle the matter for his own case and to him therefore the decision is left. Book excerpt: Science for Agriculture was the first thorough quantitative and analytical treatment of the history of the U.S. agricultural research system and as such has served as the foundation for research over the 10 years since its publication. The benefits from public and private investment in agricultural research are immense and should be understood by every student of the agricultural science system in the United States. The second edition updates important landmarks, components, characteristics, and trends of the U.S. system for developing and applying science to increase the productivity and advancements of agriculture. Science for Agriculture, 2e, is essential reading for agriculture educators and researchers, Land Grant administrators, food and agri-industry R&D and all others who need to understand the factors that will influence future public agricultural research policy.
