Book excerpt: The turbulent flow field of a swirling jet issuing from a nozzle, beneath and parallel to a free surface has been studied in as much detail as possible using a three-component laser Doppler velocimeter and flow visualization. The results have shown that the swirl leads to the faster spreading and quicker mixing of the jet. For strongly swirling jets (S = 0.522), the similiarity is not reached within ten diameters downstream. The results have also shown that both the acial and tangential velocity components decrease outward from the jet axis, naturall leading to centrifugal instabilities. This, in turn, leads to the creation of large scale coherent structures at the periphery of the jet, particularly when it is in the vicinity of the free surface. The turbulent shear stresses exhibit anisotropic behavior, the largest always being in the plane passing through the jet axis. The change of TKE with S is not monotonic. It is maximum for S - 0.265, smallest for S = 0.50, and has an intermediate value for S - 0.522. This is due to the occurrence of vortex breakdown and the resulting intensification of the turbulence within the jet prior to its exit from the nozzle.

It is proposed that numerical models may be assessed more accurately and directly by validation with a completely described experimental model, consisting of accurate descriptions of the operating conditions, fluid properties, and experimental uncertainties. This idea is demonstrated using an experimental model of a swirling jet at three Reynolds numbers (Re = 550, 2560, and 3650), with vortex breakdown existing in the higher two Reynolds number cases. Measurements of the swirling jet were obtained at two locations upstream of the jet exit with the intent to provide the flow profiles to the numerical model and four downstream locations used to assess the accuracy of the model. Numerical simulations using the laminar model and k-e, k-w, and k-e-v2-f, turbulence models were used for turbulence closure. Detached Eddy Simulation (DES) and Reynolds-stress model results were also obtained to demonstrate unsteady numerical solutions. The results of the experimental and numerical models are compared to understand the influence on validation using a completely described experimental model.

In each case, three Craya-Curtet numbers are considered which correspond, respectively, to flow situations with no moderate and strong recirculation. Turbulence closure is achieved by using the k-epsilon model and a recently proposed realizable Reynolds stress algebraic equation model that relates the Reynolds stresses explicitly to the quadratic terms of the mean velocity gradients and ensures the positiveness of each component of the turbulent kinetic energy. Calculations are carried out with a finite-volume procedure using boundary-fitted curvilinear coordinates. A second-order accurate, bounded convection scheme and sufficiently fine grids are used to prevent the solutions from being contaminated by numerical diffusion. The calculated results are compared extensively with the available experimental data. It is shown that the numerical methods presented are capable of capturing the essential flow features observed in the experiments and that the realizable Reynolds stress algebraic equation model performs much better than the k-epsilon model for this class of flows of great practical importance.

Book excerpt: In this study, velocity distributions of a swirling and a non-swirling jet flows were obtained using Laser Doppler Anemometer (LDA) in the near field where both jets are at the same stages of development. The resulting mean velocity and Reynolds stress distributions and the energy budgets of the axial Reynolds stresses are assessed. All Reynolds stresses showed higher magnitude in the swirling case compared to the non-swirling one at the same measurement axial locations. The swirling jet is found to exhibit larger production, mean convection and turbulence transport terms in the energy budget of axial Reynolds stress. The result shows faster development of the swirling jet compared with the non-swirling jet and is in consistency with previous studies. The turbulent transport term is found to be responsible for the faster development of the turbulence in the swirling jet.
