Book excerpt: "Micro air vehicles, or MAVs, are of current interest for a multitude of uses to which they, being small, unmanned vehicles, are uniquely suited. Among the proposed uses are exploration, reconnaissance, and communications. They can be deployed inside buildings, where their small size, hovering capability, and maneuverability, are important factors. Due to their small size, they operate at low Reynolds numbers where conventional flying mechanisms are not advantageous. Thus, attempts have been made to learn from natural flyers like insects and birds. Natural flight is accomplished by flapping wings, and this idea has been proposed for certain types of MAVs termed ornithopters and entomopters. This dissertation investigates the aerodynamics applicable to low Reynolds number unsteady flow, and consists of four stages. The first stage is CFD for fixed wings at low Reynolds number. In the second and third stage, experiments are conducted on flapping and plunging wings. The final stage consists of dynamic mesh CFD for a plunging airfoil"--Abstract, leaf iii.

The objective of the research is to provide further insight into the aerodynamics of flapping-wing air vehicles. Experimental work is conducted in the NPS 1.5 m x 1.5 m (5 ft x 5 ft) in-draft wind tunnel. A previously constructed long-span flapping-wing model suspended by cables is used to approximate the two-dimensional nature of the numerical simulation. For this experiment, the model is configured with two wings executing plunge-only motion. Thrust is indirectly determined by using a laser rangefinder to measure streamwise displacement of the model. Results are compared with previous experimental tests. A numerical analysis is conducted using USPOT, a locally developed unsteady panel code that models two independently moving airfoils with three degrees of freedom and non-linear deforming wakes. Thrust and efficiencies are computed for harmonically oscillating airfoils. Direct comparison is made between experimental and numerical thrust measurements.

Book excerpt: Three methods for computing the unsteady lift response due to basic kinematic motion---plunging, pitching, and flapping---are compared. The first two methods are analytical models developed by Theodorsen and Leishman, while the third method is a numerical method known as the unsteady vortex lattice method. The MATLAB code for this numerical method is included. All calculations are evaluated for the potential flow case.

Book excerpt: This is an ideal book for graduate students and researchers interested in the aerodynamics, structural dynamics and flight dynamics of small birds, bats and insects, as well as of micro air vehicles (MAVs), which present some of the richest problems intersecting science and engineering. The agility and spectacular flight performance of natural flyers, thanks to their flexible, deformable wing structures, as well as to outstanding wing, tail and body coordination, is particularly significant. To design and build MAVs with performance comparable to natural flyers, it is essential that natural flyers' combined flexible structural dynamics and aerodynamics are adequately understood. The primary focus of this book is to address the recent developments in flapping wing aerodynamics. This book extends the work presented in Aerodynamics of Low Reynolds Number Flyers (Shyy et al. 2008).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, the agility and maneuverability of flying insects have been an inspiration to fluid dynamists. A large number of research activities have been conducted within the biological, aerodynamics, and computational science communities to understand the complex flow fields around flapping insects and their capability for rapid maneuvers. However, the understanding of these natural phenomena is still in its infancy. Recent experimental flow visualizations have shown the complex vortical structures around flapping wings and vortex interactions. Even with the advent of faster and better computer processors and improved numerical algorithms, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques to accurately predict flow features around flapping wings lag behind. One of the driving forces for the study of insect flight is its applicability for micro-air vehicles (MAVs). Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs) have potential uses for surveillance, communication, hostage rescue missions, and sensor placement for chemical, biological, and nuclear materials. However, technical challenges such as small scale power generation, navigation, propulsion, and most importantly production of necessary aerodynamics forces have hindered the advancement of this technology and the routine use of MAVs. The most effective way to generate aerodynamic forces for such applications is by the use of flapping wings. Different components that are needed for the analysis and prediction of aerodynamic behavior of flapping wing flight are evaluated in this study. These components include: (a) library-based approach for adding overset capability to handle large relative motion between different objects. and (b) the use of a generalized mesh for handling complex geometries. Different interpolation methods for the transfer of information across different layers of generalized overset meshes are evaluated. The effect of primitive vs. conservative interpolation of flow variable is evaluated using a moving discontinuity across the overlapping region. Also, a preliminary study has been conducted to couple the developed flow simulation system with the FSI library developed at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The focus of the research work is to explore various approaches for moving body problems and to investigate the developed computational system for its applicability and exploration for aerodynamic analysis of flapping wing flight.

Book excerpt: This book introduces the topics most relevant to autonomously flying flapping wing robots: flapping-wing design, aerodynamics, and artificial intelligence. Readers can explore these topics in the context of the "Delfly", a flapping wing robot designed at Delft University in The Netherlands. How are tiny fruit flies able to lift their weight, avoid obstacles and predators, and find food or shelter? The first step in emulating this is the creation of a micro flapping wing robot that flies by itself. The challenges are considerable: the design and aerodynamics of flapping wings are still active areas of scientific research, whilst artificial intelligence is subject to extreme limitations deriving from the few sensors and minimal processing onboard. This book conveys the essential insights that lie behind success such as the DelFly Micro and the DelFly Explorer. The DelFly Micro, with its 3.07 grams and 10 cm wing span, is still the smallest flapping wing MAV in the world carrying a camera, whilst the DelFly Explorer is the world's first flapping wing MAV that is able to fly completely autonomously in unknown environments. The DelFly project started in 2005 and ever since has served as inspiration, not only to many scientific flapping wing studies, but also the design of flapping wing toys. The combination of introductions to relevant fields, practical insights and scientific experiments from the DelFly project make this book a must-read for all flapping wing enthusiasts, be they students, researchers, or engineers.

Woolston and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerodynamic forces and moments associated with flapping oscillations of finite wings at low speeds are considered. A comparison of theoretical and experimental results is made for a rectangular wing of aspect ratio 2. Calculated results are also given for three tapered wings of aspect ratio 3 with varying amounts of sweepback. The calculations are based on a numerical solution of the integral equation of subsonic lifting-surface theory. The experimental techniques employed are essentially those used in previous measurements associated with pitching oscillations. Theory and experiment are generally in good agreement with regard to magnitude of the forces and moments, but differ with regard to phase angle.
