Book excerpt: This descriptive research study was conducted to determine the state of perceived teacher morale and student academic performance as measured by fourth-grade reading and math scores among four elementary schools defined by the servant leadership score of each principal in this Florida elementary school district. While related research from other geographical areas was identified and published, the aim of this study was to describe the current state of these variables in the southeastern United States. Four elementary principals and 153 elementary teachers participated in this study. The Revised Servant Leadership Profile 360 survey (RSLP 360) was used to obtain the principals' perceptions of servant leadership based on the criteria from the survey to categorize the four schools as servant or non-servant leadership-led schools, and the Purdue Teacher Opinionaire survey (PTO) was used to collect the teachers' perceptions of morale. Fourth-grade Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) scores in mathematics and reading were retrieved from the Florida Department of Education database and used as the third variable in this study. The intent of this research was not to define relationships between servant leadership, teacher morale, and student test scores, but to describe the extent to which these variables existed based on the perceptions of the survey participants and state test scores for this school district in Florida. The results from this study may be used for future research and practices to further examine the active and potential status of servant leadership, teacher morale, and student academic performance outcomes in PreK-12 education.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this correlational study is to test the theory of servant leadership that relates the servant leadership characteristics of school principals to student achievement in Southwest Virginia schools. The primary independent variable was principals' servant leadership characteristics as derived from a self-assessment survey (SASL). The dependent variable was student achievement as measured by students' scores on the Virginia Department of Education Standard of Learning achievement tests in math and reading. Other variables tested were principal total experience in education, principal total experience in administration and principal education level. The data analysis chosen for this research is the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient, which is more commonly known as either Pearson's correlation or Pearson's r. However, because 3 out of 6 variables failed normality tests, Spearman's rho, a nonparametric test, was chosen as the best analysis for the monotonic data. The results of analysis yielded a significant positive correlation of principal servant leadership characteristics and reading achievement scores. There were no other significant findings among other variables tested.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship exists between teacher-perceived levels of servant leadership in principals, teacher-perceived level of school culture, and student achievement within the Lower Kuskokwim School District. The method of analysis was a quantitative approach. The researcher collected data through two surveys, school index report, and independent school report cards and determined (a) a statistically significant relationship existed between servant leadership and school culture; (b) a statistically significant relationship did not exist between teacher-perceived principal servant leadership characteristics and student achievement and graduation percentage rates; and (c) a statistically significant relationship did not exist between teacher-perceived school culture and student achievement. The researcher collected data from two surveys, school index report, and individual school report cards and determined the correlation between teacher-perceived levels of servant leadership in principals, teacher-perceived level of school culture, and student achievement in an educational setting. The Servant Leadership Assessment Instrument collected data about the principal's servant leadership traits as perceived by the teachers in their school. The School Culture Survey collected information on the current level of school culture from teacher perceptions. The School Index Value Score collected data on student achievement data from state assessments. The Alaska State Individual Report Card collected High School Graduation Rates. The study determined there was a tri-variable positive relationship. This study will add to the research in the area of servant leadership and its potential to impact organizations and people.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is increasing pressure to improve student achievement and educational leadership accountability (Allen, 2001; No Child Left Behind [NCLB], 2002). The learning environment of a school is critical to achieving these measures. One important aspect of a learning environment is the link between a principal’s leadership style and school climate (Bryan, 2011; Kelley, Thornton, & Daugherty, 2005; Vail, 2005). Principals through their leadership style and behavior can foster a positive school climate (Chirichello,1999; Waters, Maranon, & McNulty, 2004; Wheelock, 2005). Some of the benefits of a healthy school climate include more productive staff, higher job satisfaction, and high academic emphasis (Black, 2010; Marshall, 2004; Vail, 2005; Wheelock, 2005). Previous studies have examined this relationship in elementary settings, but few have studied this construct in a suburban secondary school setting (Allen, 2011; Black, 2010; Kelley et al., 2005; Wheelock, 2005). ^ This sequential mixed method study explored behaviors of N=79 secondary teachers from a suburban high school and a principal by measuring aspects of principal behaviors (supportive, directive) and aspects of teacher interactions (engaged, frustrated, or intimate). Two basic dimensions of school climate, openness and intimacy were explored, as well as the demographic variables of gender and years of teaching. ^ The first phase included administering a questionnaire that measured school climate openness by examining the behaviors of the principal and teachers. During the second phase a focus group with N=7 teachers was conducted and an elite interview with the principal. Quantitative data analysis consisted of descriptive and inferential statistics and thematic content analysis was used for the qualitative data. ^ The findings suggest that supportive leadership behaviors promote an open school climate. Additionally, this research identified a significant difference between the females’ (M=2.58) and males’ (M=2.21) views on administrative work at the (p=.033) level. Further, novice teachers required more assistance than their more experienced cohorts at the (p=.002 (n2=. 156) level. The focus group and elite interview findings indicate that supportive approachable, shared leadership, and visionary behaviors result in the a school climate exemplified by: respect and engagement, autonomy and recognition, collaboration and innovation, socialization and personalization.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to quantitatively explore and analyze the relationships among the factors of servant leadership, school culture, and student achievement in Missouri elementary schools. Two survey instruments, the Servant Leadership Assessment Instrument and the School Culture Survey, were used. A total of 677 teachers from 62 elementary schools in Missouri participated. Data from the two surveys as well as student achievement data were aggregated at the school level and analyzed using correlation and multiple regression analysis. The results of this study explain the influence of principal servant leadership on school culture and student achievement, the influence of school culture on student achievement, and the influence of the combination of servant leadership and school culture on student achievement. Explanatory models were designed from the findings to depict the relationships between servant leadership, school culture, and student achievement.

Book excerpt: This study utilized the descriptive and quantitative approaches to examine elementary school principals' leadership style and school climate in an urban school district. Research supports the relationship of leadership styles, school climate and student achievement does exist and this study identified and explored how it exists between the school principals' leadership style and school climate. Participants consisted of elementary principals and teachers in an urban school district within the southeastern region of the United States. The purpose of this study was to determine the existence of a relationship between elementary school principals' leadership styles and school climate in an urban school district. Survey instruments were the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire (LBDQ) Form XII Self and the Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire for elementary schools (OCDQ-RE). Demographic information was gathered from the principals and teachers that were subjects of this research (Table 3 and Appendix C). The following research question was posed: Does a relationship exist between the elementary school principals' leadership style and school climate in an urban school district? Descriptive statistics summarized the data characteristics of the independent variable (principal leadership style) and dependent variable (school climate). The data was analyzed using the Pearson Correlation Coefficient. A Positive linear relationship in climate was found for three different groups. These three groups had a statistically significant correlations coefficient and p-values between the LBDQ-Form XII Self and OCDQ-RE subscales. The school principals must be able to access and evaluate the impact they may have on the climate of the school. This study proposed strategies school principals from the participating school district can use to create a more open school climate.

Book excerpt: The primary purpose of this study was to determine if relationships existed between the 21 instructional leadership behaviors identified by Marzano, Waters, and McNulty (2005) and elementary student academic achievement in the areas of reading, writing, and science as measured by the state accountability test (STAAR). A total of 25 principals representing 25 elementary school campuses completed the Adapted School Leadership Behaviors Survey (ASLBS). This survey was adapted from the School Leadership Behaviors Survey (SLBS) Schindler (2012) and used to assess principal self-perceptions of the 21 instructional leadership behaviors as they relate to campus student achievement. Correlational analyses were conducted to investigate the relationship between elementary school principals’ perception of their 21 instructional leadership behaviors and student achievement as measured by the state assessment (STAAR) Percent at Phase-in Satisfactory Standard or Above (Sum of All Grades Tested) in the subjects of reading, writing, and science. The findings of the study would suggest that there were some weak uphill (positive) relationships between the 21 instructional leadership behaviors and campus student achievement. However overall the correlations found could be described as having a range between no linear relationship and a moderate downhill (negative) relationship. For purposes of this study, correlations where -.30 ≤ r ≤.30 were deemed too small to discuss in detail but are included in the statistical tables for reference. Negative notable correlations were found between the instructional leadership behaviors of change agent, contingent rewards, flexibility, intellectual stimulation, involvement in curriculum and instruction optimizer, and outreach and one or more of the STAAR tested subjects of reading, writing, and science. Of all the positively correlated, none were statistically significant. The leadership behavior of Change Agent was negatively correlated to writing (r = -.518) and statistically significant (p=.008). The leadership behavior of Contingent Rewards was negatively correlated to science (r = -.412) and statistically significant (p=.041). The leadership behavior of Involvement in Curriculum was positively correlated to writing (r = -.419) and statistically significant (p=.037). These three leadership behaviors showed a moderate downhill (negative) relationship to campus academic achievement. Of the three correlations which were found to be negative and at a statistically significant level (p≤ .05), the greatest negative correlation found was where r = -.518 which is still a very small correlation. The sample size was such that relationships were found, but significance would not be generalizable.

Book excerpt: This study examined the relationship between principal leadership style and climate as perceived by teachers. Eleven elementary schools and 275 teachers participated in this study. The Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI) assessed teachers' perceptions of principals' leadership styles. The Organizational Climate Description Questionnaire - Revised Elementary (OCDQ-RE) obtained climate data, measured as Open, Closed, Disengaged, and Engaged. Demographic data consisted of five categories: (a) Gender, (b) Years teaching, (c) Years with current principal, (d) Level of Education, and (e) SES and Star rating of each school. An analysis, utilizing Pearson's r correlations, indicated relationships existed between the five LPI and the six OCDQ-RE subscales for principal and teacher behavior. When teachers perceived exemplary principal behaviors, their perception of Collegial and Supportive climate indicators were very high and Disengagement low. Conversely, when teachers perceived low principal behaviors, their perceptions of Collegiality were low with high Restrictive climate indicators and high Disengagement. An analysis, utilizing MANOVA, indicated teachers who spent zero to two years with the principal or spent greater than six years with the principal perceived their principals in a similar manner. Teachers who spent three to five years with the principal scored the principal lower. An analysis of the SES and Star rating of the school indicated teachers from high SES schools with satisfactory achievement scored their principals higher than teachers from high SES schools with high achievement on four LPI subscales and one OCDQ-RE subscale. Findings support the proposition for continued research in the area of school climate and principal leadership.

Book excerpt: Culturally Responsive School Leadership focuses on how school leaders can effectively serve minoritized students—those who have been historically marginalized in school and society. The book demonstrates how leaders can engage students, parents, teachers, and communities in ways that positively impact learning by honoring indigenous heritages and local cultural practices. Muhammad Khalifa explores three basic premises. First, that a full-fledged and nuanced understanding of “cultural responsiveness” is essential to successful school leadership. Second, that cultural responsiveness will not flourish and succeed in schools without sustained efforts by school leaders to define and promote it. Finally, that culturally responsive school leadership comprises a number of crucial leadership behaviors, which include critical self-reflection; the development of culturally responsive teachers; the promotion of inclusive, anti-oppressive school environments; and engagement with students’ indigenous community contexts. Based on an ethnography of a school principal who exemplifies the practices and behaviors of culturally responsive school leadership, the book provides educators with pedagogy and strategies for immediate implementation.

Within the educational arena, studies have shown the correlation of leadership styles among principals and the school culture (Pepper & Thomas, 2002; Perspective, 2012; Williams, 2009). This study attempted to extend Bass's Transformational Leadership Theory (1985) and Hersey and Blanchard's Situational Leadership Theory (1976) through examining leadership dimensions among teacher team leaders - and their influence on school climate. Using a predictive correlational research design, the current study sought to investigate relationships between leadership dimensions of teacher leaders and elementary school climates. Two different groups of teachers from a school district in the northern metro area in Atlanta participated in two different surveys. Teacher team leaders from ten elementary schools were surveyed using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire to determine their leadership dimensions, or refined constructs of each leadership style. Subsequently, all other teachers working with the identified team leaders were surveyed using the Organizational Climate Description for Elementary Schools. A multiple regression analysis was used and indicated that there is a significant relationship between the two constructs -- teacher leadership dimensions and elementary school climate -- in the area of Disengaged Teacher Behavior and Teacher Openness Index. There were no significant relationships found between teacher team leaders' leadership dimensions and elementary school climate in the areas of Collegial Teacher Behavior or Intimate Teacher Behavior. Discussion of the results and implications for future research were made.
