Two surveys were administered: The MSCEIT (Mayer, Salovey, & Caruso, 2002) and the MLQ5x (Bass & Avolio, 2000) to the 151 managers of CSW and their subordinates. Book excerpt: The buoyant research interest in the constructs emotional intelligence (EI) and transformational leadership (TFL) is a testament to the crucial role of emotional skills at work. EI is often described as an antecedent of TFL, and several empirical studies report a positive relationship between these variables. On closer inspection, however, there may be methodological factors, such as common method variance, that potentially undermine the validity of findings. Using a multi-rater assessment (N)=)227), this study sought to overcome the problem of method variance, whilst at the same time evaluate its potential presence by comparing same-source and non-same-source data. Findings suggest that, when using a strong methodological design, no relationship between EI and TFL is found. Thus, these findings renew the demand for scientific rigour in the design of studies to enhance their validity. The theoretical ramifications of this study are such that management scholars need to re-conceptualize the relationship between EI and TFL.

Book excerpt: This study investigated whether there was a correlation between principal's emotional intelligence and servant leadership behaviors, as perceived by the teachers in their schools. The teachers ratings their principals' emotional intelligence and servant leadership behaviors were also compared with and the principals' self-ratings on the same measures. Many elementary principals are overwhelmed with their jobs and the level of stress sometimes reaches the point of exhaustion. This quantitative study used the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale to measure the elementary principals' rating of the independent variable emotional intelligence and the WLEIS-observer to measure the teacher ratings of the principals. Research has shown that the leadership style of a principal is important to the success of a school. Servant leadership combined with emotional intelligence were identified in this study as strongly correlated in the leadership of elementary school principals; 97% of the constructs (34 out of 35) correlated significantly in the teachers' ratings of SL and EI, and 74% of the constructs (26 out of 35) correlated significantly in the principals' ratings of SL and EI. The hope is that this study will serve as a guide to refine the investigation of the correlation of servant leadership and emotional intelligence. The findings of this study may help the elementary principals in public schools gain an understanding of the significance that servant leadership and emotional intelligence may have in their role as a school principal. The findings might also help to create a better training process to prepare elementary principals for the stressful job of prinicipalship.

Book excerpt: All around the world, information technology is evolving at an alarming rate, and it could be challenging keeping up with the growing changes that we are witnessing with it. This paper explored the relationship between emotional intelligence and leadership styles among information technology professionals. Does emotional intelligence predict leadership style and do leadership styles predict emotional intelligence components? A total of 185 participants were involved in this study. The leadership styles, which are comprised of transformational, transactional, and passive-avoidant, were measured by the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire - MLQ 5X (Bass & Avolio, 1995). The emotional intelligence components, which are comprised of perception of emotion, managing own emotions, managing others’ emotions and utilization of emotion, were measured by the Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test -- SSEIT (Schutte et al., 2009). The demographic areas controlled in this study include gender, age, ethnicity, education, and tenure. Multiple regression was conducted on each of the seven hypotheses in this study, and it was determined that transformational leadership style and transactional leadership style were predictors of perception of emotion, managing others’ emotions and utilization of emotion. This study also revealed that transformational leadership style was a predictor of managing own emotions. Surprisingly, transactional leadership style was not a predictor of managing own emotions. As expected, there was no significant correlation discovered between passive-avoidant leadership style and emotional intelligence. Furthermore, the results showed that emotional intelligence was a predictor of both transformational and transactional leadership styles. This study discovered that gender was a significant variable, and females scored higher than males in the emotional intelligence component of managing others’ emotions. The findings in this study coincide with the body of literature that exists, which revealed positive relationships between emotional intelligence components and transformational and transactional leadership styles.
