Book excerpt: The effects of music on student achievement have been widely researched, but implementing rigorous programs can be expensive. Since schools are often operating on tight budgets, music programs may not be realistic additions, making low-cost options such as playing background music appealing. The purpose of this study is to answer the question: To what extent does background music affect student productivity in the elementary classroom? The researcher looked at the effects of live music and recorded music since all prior research looks at recorded background music only. Prior research found that background music has some effect on student productivity, but the field of research is still relatively unexplored. To add to the existing field of research, this convergent parallel mixed-methods study was conducted on 21 first-grade students from one classroom to examine how background music affected student productivity. Quantitative data was collected through student surveys and qualitative data was collected through coded observations of student behavior. Through the use of comparative analysis, common themes emerged and the results were compared to the current body of research. Results found that background music may help student productivity and that live music is marginally more successful at decreasing distractive behaviors, such as talking and touching, in comparison to recorded music. Key findings found that when students preferred a type of music, instances of off-task behavior decreased. This suggests that student productivity may increase when students are allowed to choose the music played in the background. Since student preference appears to have an effect, it is recommended that students be given headphones or earplugs when teachers play background music so they can either choose the music they like or work in relative silence. The study concluded that background music has at least a limited positive effect on student productivity. While it is compelling to think something as simple as background music may help student success, it is important to keep in mind that other factors may play a larger role. For example, teacher expertise or access to outside resources may have a greater effect on student success. Although further research is needed, it is exciting to know that background music appears to affect student productivity because it is something almost any teacher can do.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of using background music on the concentration and on-task behavior of students with special needs during independent class assignments. A multiple case study approach is used to gather the data for 8 participants having different cases yet all diagnosed having problems with their concentration and attention span. Four instruments are used to collect data from different resources which are student's files and documents, parent questionnaire, student observation checklist, and student interview. Baseline data is collected for 3 consecutive weeks without music followed by an intervention period of another 3 consecutive weeks where music is played in the background. During the time students are working independently, the researcher filled the behavior charts for every student examining the amount of off-task behavior per minute and the behavior manifested when the student stops working. Results demonstrate that the introduction of music in the background has different effects on the off-task behavior of students. Six out of the eight students have a decrease in their off-task behavior during the administration of music, and two students have a negligible to minor increase in their off-task behavior during the administration of music. In general, the intervention shows that the use of music has positive implications for assignment completion rate.

Book excerpt: The acquisition and refinement of complex motor skills requires that learners focus attention strategically in order to optimize performance outcomes. A considerable body of research across a variety of disciplines supports the idea that performers who focus their attention on the external effects of the body’s movements experience enhanced performance outcomes, whereas those who attend more to the movements themselves are disadvantaged. The effects of attentional focus on motor performance are explained, at least in part, by the relationship between focus of attention (FOA) and automatic motor control processes that develop with practice; automaticity allows cognitive resources to be allocated toward the processing of information related to task goals rather than the physical movements associated with the task itself. We understand little about how this phenomenon may function in the initial stages of learning complex skills, such as playing a wind instrument, when learners must attend to the discrete physical components associated with tone production in order to generate more desirable outcomes and establish proper fundamentals. In this dissertation, I report the findings of three studies designed to explore how FOA functions during ongoing instruction and self-directed practice. The first two investigations examined how experienced beginning band teachers instinctively direct students’ attention to internal (e.g., embouchure) and external (e.g., tone) components of performance. In both studies, teachers focused student attention on predominantly internal performance components, but they differed idiosyncratically in how they directed learners’ attention based on concurrent instructional goals and activities. Teachers frequently described relationships between internal and external components of performance (e.g., how embouchure manipulation affects tone), suggesting that they strategically paired physical behaviors with external effects in order to build students’ knowledge of action-outcome relationships. Finally, we examined how undergraduate music education majors enrolled in a brass methods course chose to focus their attention on internal and external elements of performance during self-directed practice on an unfamiliar brass instrument. Analysis of their practice verbalizations revealed that students with extensive training in brass performance reported focusing their attention on predominantly external elements, whereas the less experienced students described focusing on both internal and external elements relatively equally, often noting how their physical actions influenced external outcomes. Taken together, these results suggest that learning and refinement of instrumental performance skills may be optimized when learners’ attention is drawn to action-outcome relationships early in their training. Learners can recruit knowledge of these relationships when troubleshooting performance problems and think critically about how best to achieve musical goals. Classroom music teachers who explicitly verbalize the relationships between internal and external components of performance may therefore increase the efficiency with which students’ skills and independence are cultivated over the long term

The use of music in physical education as a positive influence on a student’s mood has been thoroughly researched however there is more research needed to evaluate how music may affect different mood states. The study investigated how music may influence six different mood states of students in a physical education class with music and without music. The mood states evaluated include anger, confusion, fatigue, depression, tension and vigor. Physical Educators could use music in their class to improve student’s mood by the end of class. The study was designed to measure the influence of music on a student’s mood aged 14 years old after a physical education class. A two by two independent sample ANOVA design was utilized by collecting data from eighth grade students across three classes to assess if moods improved based on scores between the pre/post- assessments during a class with music and a class without music. The Brunel Mood Scale was distributed before and after a class without music and before and after a class with music. Findings indicate that there was no significant interaction effect of music and time on any of the six dependent variables. There was a significant main effect of music for anger and vigor.

One of the strategies in mind is using music in classroom activities. Music is one of the few activities that involve using the whole brain. It is intrinsic to all cultures and can have surprising benefit. This study aimed at finding out the level of stress and classroom performance of college freshmen who listened and did not listen to acoustic music while taking the teacher-made test in General Psychology. Every student goes through different kinds of stress. One of the most stressful tasks of students is to pass each examination they have to face. The respondents of this study were from two sections of General Psychology class of the Philippine Merchant Marine School. From one section, out of thirty-two students, thirty were selected. Similarly, from the second section, thirty from forty students were selected as respondents of the study. To measure the level of stress, the researcher referred to Stress Assessment from Elizabeth Scott's "Your Guide to Stress Management" and from "Understanding Stress: Signs, Symptoms, Cause, and Effects". It consists of fourteen items modified and suited for the purpose of the study. To measure the performance in General Psychology Test, two sets of teacher-made test, each consisting of thirty questions were used which were given on two separate occasions. The data were gathered and interpreted using appropriate statistical tools.
